try this. Mute the video and put any song to this. I guarantee that there will be moments of amazing musicality, no matter what the song. That is the beauty of Jiri Kylian's choreography and timing
music by a great musicien, Steve Reich; Jiri Kilian is one of my favourite choreographers, did you know that he himself is also a musicien? that extra knowledge and his dancing make a special combination. There´s a piece in this ballet with Mozart's music, and it always moves me.
I have seen this live and was totally blown away as too were the audience at the time. It was a new peice from Kylian at the time and I think I was one of the lucky ones to see it performed in Bradford not long after it was first performed. Kylian is a genius and his work it to admired.
I remember seeing this when I was a child (about 20 years ago). Up to today Jiri Kylian is still the only choreographer I know by name. I was immediately hooked.
NOTE:
This is only a small part of the performance, and by no means the best. I highly recommend trying to find the complete performance, as it gets much better later on.
Falling Angels is a paradox. He confronts women in society in the 50s. Conformity, lack of rights and freedom. The way women are expected to live. The motifs in the work represent his intent.
"Falling Angels" is actually open to interpretation. This piece is one of Kylian's Black and White Ballets. The B&W Ballets ask big questions such as What is life, love and dance. The lighting resembles a chessboard. He may be insinuating that life, love and dance is all a strategic game.
ultimately i believe Falling angels represents a dancers continual strive for perfection and the obsessive and unatainable goals this ideal possesses.
The lighting is also significant as it may represent conformity and entrapment. the square boxes may be symbolic of coffins, cages or the restrictions we place on ourselves. Kylian plays with this idea using the dancers as instruments to explore these ideas.
hope this helps in your interpretation of the piece! just my thoughts anyway!
Absolument super! J'admire la précision de ce groupe, la choréographie originale et l'accord entre la musique et les mouvements rhythmiques de l'ensemble. Mes félicitations!
I like this, this is really interesting. I've really connected to all of Kylian's work I've seen thus far. I tried to find some background on the choreographer's concepts and themes but I'm having trouble making the connections when I watch this particular piece. =/
Since Mr K based this choreography on Reich's composition "drumming"(in this particular piece is focused on part 1 btw), you should read more about what Reich was trying to accomplish by composing such piece. Like you've said it's very repetitive but highly intense on precision timing and tuning to find the perfect moment of a split. It's very delectable to find THE perfect moment. You should also try "Drumming" part 2, 3, 4. Hope you find Reich intriguing!
we are studying this for our hsc. and at first i thought his works were just wierd but now omg he is such a good choreographer. knowng what the dance is about makes it easier to appreciate his works.
Talking about fresh dance concepts in contemporary dance. Kilian is one of the greatest. However check Lightfoot-Leon's pieces as well. Try and see Signing Off live or in full length anyway not just the excerpts found on youtube. Funny i haven't seen Sol Leon or Paul Lightfoot on stage. Only on video. Leon is in this one on the first row to the extreme left as they enter. She can be quite passionate, very expressive in all her performances, and along with Paul (same as in dance) make a...
Fascinating. Somehow digital animation must have been some small inspiration for this. There's something about how the motion breaks with the sound stream, then picks it up again. Cool.
he is from my country also:) and he is really amazing!i saw falling angels on the "worlds beyonds" in oslo yesterday in the new opera house! and it was amazing. was talking to "jirka" also in the pause:) fakt moooc prijemnej typek!
Why do you insist that the arts are about money? Most of the artists that we consider "great" today made hardly any money during their lifetime. This is absolutely beautiful.
This piece isn't "wierd" and neither is the movement. Its about pregnancy and birth. When Jiri choreographed this piece it was in a time when there were a large about of babies being born in the Netherlands. So naturally some of the movements would look a bit odd to try and portray that. Don't diss, Jiri Kylian is one of the greatest choreographers of our time and his work should not be criticized in such a way. You try and do better.
Call me crazy. Call me ignorant. Call me much worse... These are stunning dancers, but this is not brilliant choreography!! Some of it is down right silly... Is it any wonder that Dance compared to all other performing arts makes the least amount of money and has the least patronage? Before you start typing a nasty response, think for a moment about what great art really is. Perhaps you can be the one to change the tides...
Yeah, some of my friends, very cultured, don't like this piece too, specially because the over use of steve reich's 'drumming' in contemporary dance. I like the black&white and the women - reminders me the great movies of Ingmar Bergman.
That probably means that they don't know how to look at it. Don't focus on individual dancers, instead try to (sort of) look in the middle of the video screen while watching this video,
as if you were looking at a stereogram.
It's because these dancers:
1. act as moving graphical elements
2. express kinetic motion/movement
Try to concentrate on the video as a whole and not to concentrate on particular dancers.
It's more than just brilliant choreography, it's fantastic...
Kylian is a master architect of the stage (much like Balanchine) injecting ballet with the nuances that come from modern dance. Kylian's partnering skills are unparalleled in the danceworld, as is the extraordinary technical skills of his dancers -- they are literally THE best dancers dancing today. The beauty of Kylian's choreography is that there is a human heart beating beneath it all. I am still convinced that colinmusik is a moron, however. That is unchanged.
i find this piece completely enthralling. i think we can accept both that kylian's work is brilliant, and that there are many silly moves in this piece, as silly as trying to pop out so many babies at a time like this.
I studies it for my dance HSC last year. I absolutly love it. It is just so fascinating. Mind you the frumming gets on your nerves after the 500th time you watch the video, it went on mute plenty of time in my class. hehe
