When I first got A Crimson Cosmos I didn't know what to make of this song...such a quirky beat. But after repeated listens it became one of my favorite songs on the album. I could listen to A Crimson Cosmos every day.
The whole album was written and recorded while the band were really high, at least that's what I read in an interview - I don't think there's supposed to be deeper meanings in the lyrical content
Anacorrin is right, this video and "raistlin and the rose" are both tributes to dragonlance. Both great songs, this one would be to the chronicles where the other one is about the dragonlance legends... good books
In my humble opinion, the song is about personality getting older. We gain experience, but we lose childish imagination, creativity and inspiration (which depends on neurotransmitters balance, btw), being pushed by elder people for inconvenience caused, locking out mind into a cage of day-to-day routine. Narrow but sharp comprehension is demanded by the technocratic society. Nuff said, want to get some, lose some. Broad competence is a drawback for professional development, believe me or not.
A Crimson Cosmos is one of my favorite albums. It took "Lady Rosenred" a few listens to grow on me, but it's now probably my favorite song on the album.

Wrong video-clip.
The song is about 'Raistlin' & 'Crysania' (Dragonlance), but the video-clip shows the fearys from 'Peter Pan' :-(
