  • DDT saved at least 80,000,000 lives. I'm an agronomist and I live in Brazil. Rachel Carson was an eugenist. Ecology is just a another name for eugenics.

  • Bring back DDT!!!

  • Quiz was a bit naff...

But mockery is no substitute for enlightenment....

Thanks for sharing...Made me think....yet again....

Not much point in preaching to the converted and the others probably won't listen anyway...So...I negate responsibility and put the future within the arms of Gaia...She'll sort us out......

  • like everyone says, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. obviously, your no better!

  • Rachel Carson's Book SIlent Spring - has killed over 50,000,000 people since the ban on DDT went into effect. DDT was VERY effective against mosquitoes and DID NOT cause thin egg shells in birds - resulting in less live births in the birds!! It was later found to be lead weights used in fishing, and lead pelets in buck shot - eaten by fish and then birds ate the fish! It was basically lead poisioning!!

And Carson had NO STUDIES to prove her point - she simply guessed and guessed WRONG!!!!

  • @Earthlinked If you would do one second of research you would see that in no way has she contributed to 50 mil deaths. For your information, DDT has not been banned in Africa or South America, and is still used to this day. Her work contributed to the banning of it for AGRICULTURAL USE which in tern slowed the process of the mosquitos building resistance, and hence is still effective to this day. By this she SAVED LIVES. Oh, and where did you get your stats by the way...I didn't see a source

  • @ashweee123 The source was Rachel Carson before she died - the stats are from the CDC. Also it is a VERY WELL KNOWN FACT - that her book has killed more people than most wars!!!!!!! THere was NOT ONE MINUTE of research - and Carson admitted that before her death!!!!!!!!!!

  • hi rachel louis caroson i'm stay u ur my people rachel louis carson ur cool girl

  • Great video, I can tell you put a lot of time into it

  • WOW!!!! The Dark Lord of the Sith herself. Single handedly responsible for more Human deaths than anyone in history. Uncle Adolf, Comrade Stalin, Chairman Mao, and Pol Pot would be jealous. Congratulations Rachel!!!!!! You killed 86,000,000 people...and still counting.... Every 12 seconds another brown or black skinned child somewhere bites the dust...oh there went another one. That's 86,000,000 children who might have grown up to find a cure for cancer, or maybe the next Da Vinci. Oh well....

  • What are you talking about?

  • Rachel Carson, who is hailed as one of the founders of the modern so called "green" movement. She wrote a book about DDT called "Silent Spring". Virtually everything she claimed turned out to be bullshit, but it was enough to get DDT banned. Since the DDT ban, over 86 million people have died of malaria. DDT was the most effective pesticide ever devised by man. DDT is the reason why we don't malaria here in the US anymore. Folks in Africa and Asia weren't so lucky.

  • If Rachel Carson were alive today, and I met her, I'd strangle the bitch.

  • Basically, a few birds looked like their egge shells were too thin, so she leads a crusade to stamp out DDT use. All here research was fraudulent, and by 2015, 100 million people, mostly children and pregnant women from third world countries, will die from a sickness that would have been eradicated by now if not for Rachel Carson. She is responsible for more human deaths than occurred in all of WWII.

  • I can tell that you really don't like her because you care and hurt so much about the tragedy. You have a good heart, but I also think that you do not know much about pesticide history in the US and the serious long term effects they have on our environment.

  • It wasn't just egg shells being too thin (reproductive rates severely went down in turn, mortalities, etc.), there were also cases of horses, humans, etc. getting hurt/dying. We didn't know/understand the effects these organochlorines would have on our environment before we used them. That was one of Rachel's points: not to ban all chemicals, but do a risk assessment, and determine whether or not it would be worth it, and use the chemicals in a smarter way.

  • I don't know if you're aware, but we still control mosquitoes with substances that have a much lower toxicity (methoprene, BT, BS). We saw this neurotoxin DDT was killing all these insects and more, but it we didn't pause to think about exactly WHY and didn't do proper toxicity tests.

  • DDT is very persistent and has biomagnification properties due to its lipophilic nature. It is not the most effective pesticide devised by man. We could use something much more toxic that would kill the pests quickly and faster, the point is that those things along with DDT poisons non-target species. Species dying out isn't a small deal.

  • Many important species that provide redundancy functions in our ecosystems are dying out faster than we can study them and it is very, very important for our future that we take certain measure against this happening. Man could not survive without many species that in turn depend on many other species.

  • @nuvikee DDT is cheaper than other pesticides and that matters in places like Africa. I hope this woman is burning in hell. She deserves it for her hysteria that lead to the deaths of millions of Africans

  • @gaguy1967 Agreed.

  • She started a movement of working with nature, not against it.

Many people (particularly people with connections to chemical companies who were making huge profits from the use of pesticides) tried to claim that Silent Springs was a gross exaggeration, full of lies, and that she was a communist menace. It is easy to see why people would get this perception when she is only talking about the bad side of pesticides.

  • She admitted to focusing on the negative aspects, she did this b/c so much work had already been done on the positives and it was important to take a good, hard look at the negatives.

  • Actually, I know a lot pesticides. I grew up in farming family. I can tell you, that DDT was the king. It was the best pesticide we've ever had. In terms of toxicity for the environment, DDT is by far one of the least toxic chemicals we've ever used, and it broke down through oxidation over a very short timeframe compared to todays pesticides. It is ABSOLUTELY non-toxic to vertebrates. In a well study, 100 people injested 1 tablespoon of DDT every day for 10 years without ill effect.

  • Wow, what an excellent video. Very well done project on Rachel Carson.
