I always wondered about that! It's very simple, each panel is on a triangle-shaped column, one side is black matte, one side is mirrored, and the other side is a piece of the "deco sunburst."
I vaguely recall that "BBS" did "Sweet Georgia Brown" that year on the Tonys. And I think "Chicago" did "All I Care About" and "Pacific Overtures" did the opening number.
However, it's not the first time a show has had 2 numbers on a show (or I should say would have had)...when Smokey's Joe Cafe was nominated for Best Musical, the men of the show opened it with On Broadway and the women were supposed to sing another song later in the show but due to time overruns on some speeches, it was cut.
It's one of the few Broadway musicals ever to take the cover a major weekly news magazine (Newsweek with Donna McKechnie on the cover). I Hope I Get It did open the show and One did close it.
well ACL was credited with pretty much reviving a dead Broadway in the 1970s. Chicago didn't get the rave reviews then that it got today. Also remember that A Chorus Line pretty much hosted the awards as well since they were held at teh Shubert. It was a huge musical hit and, at the time, incredibly revolutionary. THe stories that were told were never heard before and it was very "in your face" compared to today.
Very good question, COOOOLkid. I bought a VHS copy of the 1976 Tony Awards, and at the very end of the broadcast there's some dull wrapping-up stuff, then a video glitch, and the "One" finale pops up from the middle. I think that must have been the way it was broadcast since every other nominated musical only got one song. If anyone in YouTube land has a copy of that show, please let us know!
That's cool. It seems like A Chorus Line got a "special treatment" by being able to perform two numbers. :) Not to mention it dominated the Tony Awards!
Yeah! It was really amazing to see ACL beat Chicago, and Michael Bennett beat Fosse (not to mention Donna McKechnie beat out Gwen Verdon AND Chita Rivera!).
DAMN this choreography is hard! I'm learning it for a workshop! It's almost exactly what they're doing here :)

I believe the triangle-shaped column is called a periaktek and dates back to ancient Grecian theater.

Each panel is called a periaktoi, a scenic design dating back to ancient Greece.

Kelly Bishop surely hasn't changed much in 30 years. She still looks great, just like she did here.
