i just got home from GNPDMA at Kutztown University. first Academy there without George. one of my friends from a neighboring school won the march off at the parent viewing ceremony thing. i had a blast!

I attended DMA in 1989,1990 and 1991 in Western MA and won the final march off my last year. What a thrill and a moment I'll never forget. He sounded exactly the same 17 years later, wow. He will be missed.

I know most bands have different styles of marching , but isn't there no such think as a right pivot?

@youtubz192 Well nowadays pivots are considered outdated, since most bands don't use highstepping as their main marching style. Back in the day a lot of bands needed to know pivots because they would actually use them. A pivot is basically a right turn, except you highstep into it, and you don't continue moving forward.

@Friday702Musicality He is. "Harch" carries farther as far as the vocal command goes. Its the "h" on front that basically makes you force it out. "M" is a soft sound so it doesn't carry as far on the field.

This past year (2009) at the MFA Summer Symposium's DMA March-off I got ninth place out of roughly five hundred Drum Majors. I was pretty jazzed to have made it that far. So much adrenaline. God, I miss it.

i did that when i was high school. i work on my music a little more playing the alto tenor and trumpet. however i realize my heart was in being a drum major which earn me a first place trophy ladies screaming. A drum major is a leader while expressing him or herself through marching dancing conducting

Don't be scared. They're actually pretty fun. I went to DMA here in Alabama a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the best weeks of my life! =)

I got to take part in this during the 2000 season. Took 2nd place earlier in the week and 3rd place on the final day. I was standing at parade rest, then he called an order arms. I was prepared for everything he could have thrown at me except that... arrrrgh

It's 'Detail, present arms' to call the salute. and then 'Detail, Order Arms' to bring it back.

haha. i know people who went to this. $400? way too much. i dont like the whole drum major thing anyway. i dont think i should have to listen to someone my age just because they payed a shit load to go there. I also wold have been out after the first command.

It's well worth the $400.  If you don't want to pay the 400, you can commute and pay about 200. (it's better to stay at the academy though... free meals)
