  • i like the new dub better, i dont like the way they say kaneda in the old dub

  • I must be honest, I prefer the new dub but I like how the old dub said "And Akira" instead of "Akira also" just because I felt it flowed more that way

  • not much difference really!

  • i like both dubs their both awesome

  • The new dub is infinitely better, the old dub is the one that sucks. period. End of discussion.

  • @x225w The old dub is infinitely better, the new dub is the one that sucks. period. End of discussion.

  • @xvm842 if you like the old dub that's fine i prefer the new dub

  • @x225w Alright, but don't claim it's a fact next time.

  • @xvm842 and u r right streamline is superior! why is it when i watch the shit dub i feel like im watching bleach?

  • @timothypike1991 Because the guy who plays Kaneda in the new dub is the lead actor in Bleach.

  • @xvm842 ah well i have the streamline dub on dvd i had to burn it from laserdisc

  • i love the new dub ^_^

  • I love both dubs. I just adore this movie in generallll~

  • arghh I really don't like the old dub...the new dub is awesome though

  • the old dub is perfect, the new one sucksss, specialy kenedas bub as if hes tryng to be very deep(like an emo kid), thats anoyng. mine akira dvd is with the good dub)

  • I did like the old dub of Kaneda, simply because he sounded like Leonardo from the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.

  • Theres something about the unfitting voices in the stereamline dub.. I like the japanese version over both dubs but the streamline dub just works to me for some reason. The pioneer was too clean, i didnt like how the voices and the sound effects were mixed.

  • I truly despise the later dub. The old one was fine. Pronunciation is subjective anyway.

  • @soopahsoopah

But in the Japanese version his name was definetely Kaneda not Kaneida.

  • @help4343 So? Different places say different things. Game names change. So do books. Look at where's wally?

  • So the consensus is that the old dub had better voice acting, but the newer one was translated better, right?

  • @help4343 pretty much... for me it was about the acting.

  • old voice WAAAY better

  • I prefer the 2001 dub :)

  • WHWERE CAN I GET THE OLD DUB?

  • I saw the first english dub when I was maybe seven or eight years old, this would have been 1995ish. I don't remember how their voices sounded, and since I have the 2001 dub I can't picture it sounding any other way. It's strange for me, knowing that when I first watched Akira it would have been noticeably different than the version that I have now. Bergen does a better job with Kais voice for sure. The original dub seems a lot more natural, more subtle. Either way it's a landmark film for me.

  • ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION 1988 FOR THE WIN. its more authentic and sincere. 2001 sounds cheap and corny.

  • I saw the original english dub back in the 90's on a cheap VHS tape that I bought for like 20 bucks at a comic convention. I suppose because I have so much memories and it being my first exposure to the Akira movie; It would be the first dubbing that would stick with me forever. I have the new one and it just never felt right..but, it looks great!

  • both versions are rubbish compared to the original japanese soundtrack with english subs

  • I need to get a hold of the original english dub.. I remember cause I used some specific samples from it. I rented it a few years back and realized it was re dubbed... Some of the translation is different also.. It would be nice it the option was there to use the original..

  • The 2001 dub is much better. i mean, the original couldn't even pronounce Kaneda's name right!! Canada?! Really? Thank God they made a new one or else the old one would've completely ruined my Akira moments for me!!

  • Poor constipated 80s Kaneda...

  • I think the new dub is better, especially Kaneda. His voice seems to suit him better in the new version

  • The voices of the primary males sound too similar on the new dub. What was the old dub taken from, the Madman Aussie DVD? Because, besides it being only 2ch, it's REALLY murky and midrange-heavy compared to what I would think a 2ch DD should sound like.

  • Some Akira torrents include both the 1989 and 2001 audio. If you play it in VLC Player, you can choose which one you want.

  • FUCK THE NEW VERSION DUBB. SOUND LIKE A BUNCH OF LITTLE PUNK ASS BOYS OUT OF PREP SCHOOL!l!THEY MESSED MY FAVORITE ANIMATION MOVIE UP!!! THE ORIGINAL DUBB IN 1989, THEY SOUNDED TOUGH, MANYLY AND JUST NOMRAL ROUGH KIDS!! PIONEER, THANK YOU.......

  • Lmao at all the idiots saying the japanese version is better, I bet none of you speak japanese, so how do you know the voice acting is better? Stop talking out of your asses

  • The Pioneer dub is much better.... :| but the Japenese is even better

  • @ArcherofUBW Emotionless, poorly scripted and generally terrible voice acting are all the Pioneer does. Streamline not only hired better actors, the version of the script they used conveyed the attitude of the manga far better than Pioneer's. It may have not been as verbatim-accurate, but it worked well with the actors. The new version is just shit. Utter shit.

  • @psybernetic You have got to be fucking kidding.....the things you listed fit streamline's dub more than pioneer's. And if thats the case then the fact that streamline pronounced Kaneda is "Can-E-Da" is enough to write off the dub as terribly written compared to the 2001 version.

  • @FullmetalX4 I'm well aware of how the name's supposed to be pronounced in Japanese, but you've got your phonetics wrong: Streamline had it as "ka-NE-da," when putting in stresses. Pioneer's actors may as well have been SimpleTalk voices. Notice how Kai is far from excited to see that Kaneda's still alive in the Pioneer dub. Johnny Yong Bosch is a terrible actor, as evidenced by his deadpan performance.

  • The new dub sucks, period. End of discussion.

Where did you find the old dub, in such high quality?

  • @luisdiaz1980 yes, in australia in both Bluray and dvd. search "MadMan Akira"

  • @OuterDrake7000 Cool, thanks. I knew there was a dvd with the original dub, but I was unaware there was a bluray. Is it worth getting a dvd player and the bluray....hmmmm.

  • @luisdiaz1980 There's a few HD remasters floating around. You'll have to do a search for them, but I found both 1080p and 720p versions.

  • @luisdiaz1980 I just took the old dub audio and put it over the new dub's remastered footage.

  • @luisdiaz1980 I agree, the new dub is terrible ive been hunting down an older version of the movie, people just don't know well enough to leave epic alone... like the plot to destroy akira with a live action movie... its gonna be the new Fail like DB the movie

  • @lastexile0999 The director of Book of Eli, I forget his name now, was once attached to the Akira live action movie. It sounded somewhat promising.

Now that's fallen through, so that movie's future is in limbo again...

  • @luisdiaz1980 Why make a live action version? This original is already a masterpiece and should be left as so.

  • @luisdiaz1980 I got the Australian DVD. It's region 4 but contains the original (good) and new (shite) English dubs. My wife is Japanese so a region-free DVD-player is a must. If you're not in a big city like I am it may be harder to just "find one" but you can order one on the net for the same price as a regular Region 1-only player. Why electronics makers don't want us to see foreign movies and TV shows, I'll never know but the machines that play them are they're out there.

  • @luisdiaz1980

The new dub is better in every way. Are you an idiot? The lack of emotion in the Character's voice in that 1989 dub is pathetic.

  • @JustTP94 No son, you're an idiot. Kanada!!! The new dub is shit.

I said end of discussion. It's not open for argument.

  • Comment removed

  • @JustTP94 I 100% agree with you.

  • The new dub is crappy, I prefer the original. Sure it had less lines but captured the emotion and drama of the characters then the newer pioneer dub. They talk too much and butcher the pronounciation of the Kaneda's name. I would be hard pressed to find the original VHS dub with all the newer crappy versions all over the place. Now their thinking of making yet ANOTHER dub and remaster further driving the rarity of the classic 80's dub.

  • @nanohurtz

The original dub is the one that butchered Kaneda's name. Listen to it in Japanese.

  • I like the 2001 dub better. It fits the characters' expressions more.

  • Oh Kai XDXD And, for the record, the japanese version is waaaay better than both dubs ~

  • 80's dub is better ..

  • The original dub it terrible, lol! And the pioneer dub isn't perfect, but its much better. Honestly though, the japanese version is absolute perfection. Both dubs sound like shit after hearing the original japanese version :/

  • Cam Clark = Leonardo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  • Comment removed

  • Cam Clark 10 years later = Liquid Snake

  • the new version voices r too scretchy i like the bad ass first dub voices better,

  • To be honest I'd rather watch the new dub just to hear Joshua Seth's performance as Tetsuo.

  • @crakizgood there are subtitles for a reason, and both the english dubs are weak compared to the japanese dub . Which by the way is Akira in its purest form..

  • bloody hel the 80;s one sounds lol awful

  • Japanese version is still the best.

  • @Tetsubo71183 yeah we all understand Japanese

  • Original was way the fuck better. I love Akira like no other but refuse to buy the redub. It's insulting.

  • any one else think they should redo this as a series of ovas or movies based entirely off the manga

  • I love me some Johnny Yong Bosch!

  • i...honestly dont like the streamline dub. they all sound like sissies and potheads.

  • Tetsuo 2001 is a shitty Digimon fucking disgrace to an all time animation classic with no fucking idea what it means to portray emotion through voice acting. You don't fucking change things that are fucking awesome!!!! Stupid newbie pricks!!!

  • The 80's dub was way better than that shitty fucking digimon faggot voice actor bullshit!!!!!

  • I grew up with the 80s dub so I have fond memories of it.

  • new dub sounds cleaner, but the original voice acting I think was way better. Cam Clarke's voice is just so familiar and comforting to anyone who was around in the 80's watching this stuff.

  • A little interesting fact. In the 1989 dub of Akira, Kei's voice actress, Lara Cody was the voice of Kei in the Steamline dub of Dirty Pair. As for Wendee Lee, who voiced Kei in the 2001 dub of Akira was the voice of Yuri in the Steamline dub of Dirty Pair.

  • I think we all know the original 80s dub is the best.

  • @SpeedoJoe

"I think we all know the original 80s dub is the best"? That's a bit of a blanket statement, don't you think. Go to any dub comparison video and you'll find that the response is 50/50.

As for me, I'll gladly take the 2001 dub any day. To me, the acting sounds so much more sincere, and the voices are much more appropriately cast. Having said that, Tetsuo's Streamline actor wasn't too bad, and in parts is actually better than his Pioneer counterpart.

  • I like the 2001 dub, because 1, it has Johnny Yong Bosch and Wendee Lee 2, the dialog sounds a lot better and 3. It feels like the voice actors in the 1988 dub were just thrown in without a thought and no proper planing went into the dub, as you get with a lot of old English dubbed Animes.

  • yea i dunno if its cos im a brother of a darker kind, but the original sounds kooler and less gay, the new one is for the little kids n yea anyone tell me where i can get a dvd with the 1988 streamline on, n ill be a happy guy

  • @GRANDMASTERKANE Because voices define wither or not a movie that involves gang violence, terrorism and lots of killing makes it all that much more kid friendly.

  • Prefer the old dub, hearing Canada! over and over again is incredibly strange.

  • 1989 Kaneda = Kuh-Nay-Da

    2001 Kaneda = Kah-Ne-Da

    Japanese Kaneda = Kaaaaah-Neh-Daaaaaaaaaa!!!

  • Prefer the original. The new one sounds lifeless and flat. The original dub was certainly not perfect but delivered a more believable mix of emotion for the characters.

  • i was unforunte enoguh to buy the dvd with the crappy 80s dub

  • @dalektaliban Which is weird, none of the DVDs exclusively contain the 80s dub.

  • @xvm842 i am cursed

  • @xvm842 there was a european dvd that had both of the dubs

  • @xvm842 hmm, maybe i obtained a pirated copy

  • @dalektaliban where did you find a dvd with the 80's dub? I want one.

  • @pundar no you dont lol

  • @dalektaliban i will buy it from you!!!!!!

  • @dalektaliban I'll take it off your hands,

  • watching the new DVD and I didn't know they re-dubbed it. Awful new voices are awful.

  • @Frellyouall

contract issues, i believe. same reason dbz has been redubbed a thousand times.

  • i seriously cant watch the movie with the newer dub.

  • Prefer the original

  • The new dub is like a needle in my ear drum

  • Well the reason they didn't include much on the bluray was because they used so much space on the remastered audio. And as for which dub is better, you're going to lean more toward what you grew up with. I prefer the pioneer dub, but I think the only thing that I dislike about the old dub is how they pronounce kanedas name :/

  • i like the new dub but i still preferring the old dub :D

  • The original Streamline dub is 10x's better than the Pioneer dub. Cam Clarke (voice of Kaneda) made this film enjoyable to watch, as I usually hate English dubs to begin with. Sadly, this isn't a good comparison video to view. It's better during the scenes when Kaneda is being all cocky and sarcastic to Tetsuo, or when they're fighting. The passion Cam put into Kaneda's voice is more realistic and emotionally connected. The Pioneer dub, you lose all that. Streamline version for the win!

  • @djmixer209 totally agree. I watched it first in 1992 and then again in 2005 with the special ed dvd, its true to say that voice acting is still acting and the acting was better in 89, the new dubbing is too generic of modern animation and just plain hammy and cheesy, thats not to say i wont watch it still.

  • Its funny that the guy who voiced the '89 Kaneda is absolutely awful then once he matured he did Liquid Snake and was amazing. Funny how things workout like that.

  • i saw the '89 dub first and then the new one and honestly like both. mix and match different actors and you could have an amazing dub. wish i knew were to buy the version with the '89 dub audio on it

  • @Str8Eddi3P I agree; I think both dubs are good. Though unfortunately, as far as I know, the 1989 dub has pretty much been forgotten. Only the 2001 dub has become mainstream in the last few years. I saw the 1989 dub first before I saw the 2001 dub. And I wish they would have included both versions in the same DVD along with the Japanese version.

  • @MDthornton83 i agree....heck blue ray should have done that as an added bonus future or something at least

  • @EVILOVERLORDZETTA I think the reason the Streamline dub wasn't included on the Blu-Ray was because of licensing issues.

  • @EVILOVERLORDZETTA Agreed 100%.

  • @MDthornton83 the ultimate collection comes with two DVDs the original version with the original dub and the remastered version with the wank dub.

  • THE 2001 DUB BLOWS!

Like J Depp trying to be gonzo journalist.

The Col sounds like a Community Organizer 'Talk Loud and DO Nothing but Kick Can Down the Road' while Writing Spending Checks of Other People's Hard earned Money, never got punched in the face, Barry Appointee to JCS.

The REAL COL 'owns' the problem facing REAL community and is pissed STUPID people are giving away what others built/defended, then they flee to World Bank, Ford Foundation.

"They don't teach tact at the academy!"

  • Pioneer version sounds simply awful.

  • Streamline version is the original and the best, the Pioneer version is for noobs.

  • Hellu u

  • the 1989 dub is good but kaneda sounds like he has asthma in the old dub!

  • The blu-ray version is mind blowing. It used the new dub. i'd recommend that

  • Wow, the 89 dub is fucking awful in comparison to the 2001 dub, at least in this particular scene. Not only are the voices fairly inappropriate, they're just not very good actors.

@CoolGuy62093: Yep, because fag is a great word to use.

  • @elcrowing The 2001 dub sucks. I have no clue why people think the 89 actors are bad. Kei sounded like her microphone was disconnected at 0:19 and Kaneda's actor put zero emotion into his lines in the 2001 dub. It's the 2001 dub that has the inappropriate voices, not the old one.

  • @xvm842 They're not bad, they just don't fit the characters and some of the lines are really bad/awkward/ill fitting.

  • @xvm842 Might want to loosen up those nostalgia goggles bro.

  • @xXTyroneBiggumsXx What nostalgia goggles? I saw this movie in 2007.

  • @xvm842 Is this trolling?

  • @Destino83 It's the truth.

  • @xvm842 I hear you whether its the fact that we watched the film before the new dub or not i don't know but the voices from the 89 version fit the characters way way way better.

  • Kai sounds like fag in the 2001 dub compared to the '89 version. And Kei sounds like a man. < Lame

  • 1988 is best

  • I like the 2001 dub better because of 0:48

  • Cam Clarke is good and all but Johnny does a better Kaneda.

  • Honestly, I think both dubs could have been available on DVD along with the original Japanese version of the movie. But apparently, the Streamline dub appears to have been forgotten. Because nowadays its nowhere to be found.

  • The original dub makes them sound to old.

  • @42prolly So why does Kei have a deeper voice than Kaneda in the new dub, then?

  • @xvm842 She's older than Keneda and Kai. Watching again, none of the voices fit in the original.

  • @42prolly She's only a year older. Kaneda and Kei were completely miscast in the new version.

  • @xvm842 I disagree.

  • @42prolly Just wondering, have you ever seen the original dub before?

  • @xvm842 Some, but not all of it. That and the 01 dub are the only one's I've seen any of. I've heard they've done worse.

  • The primary English dub was hilarious. The 2001 English dub with Johnny Yong Bosch was probably practical.

  • @MDthornton83 The first English dub is only hilarious to weeaboos who think mispronounced Japanese names are funny.

  • @xvm842 Well I'm not a weeaboo. I don't try to mock Japanese people for the way they sound or how to pronounce their names for my own amusement like how many people on YouTube who like to harass others for their own amusement.

  • so.... whats the best English dub to get on DVD?

  • @GameGod1111 Only the 2001 dub exists on DVD in the US.

  • kanayda? ...Redud was fantastic >_<

  • Cam Clarke Vs. Johnny Young Bosch....a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Vs. a Power Ranger. This is the true power of Akira. :D

  • or just watch the sub for some decent voice acting soz

  • @vulgarshudder The original Japanese wasn't all that.

  • I kinda like both!

  • why is it that Kaneda sounds like Christopher Walken in the old dub?

  • @WallaceCrumpet Because Christopher Walken is a very good actor.

  • @xvm842

    ...no that's...

    that doesn't come into it.

  • @WallaceCrumpet Then what does?

  • On the DVD release they should put both dubs on, then people can decide which one to watch.

  • @CornishCreamtea07 They can't due to copyright issues in the US. The only DVDs that have both dubs are the UK and Australia ones.

  • The 2001 voice acting seems a little better to me.

  • I agree. Cam Clark can sound very whinnie!

  • @boru25 Johnny Yong Bosch sounded whiny to me.

  • 2001 dub fits the character more

    but thats my opinion

  • @jackooisawsome Agreed, the original dub makes them sound like adults, and the script was kinda bad. I only liked Tetsuo's mutation with the original dub. JMO

  • @MisterBankz If you think the original dub makes them sound like adults, compare Kei's voices in this clip.

  • @xvm842 I think Kei sounds fine in the redub. I mean Tetsuo, Yamagata, Kai & Kaneda sound like they're grown adults when they're like what 17, 18? and I didn't like Colonel's voice in the original dub. The voices I did like however were the Doctor, Kaori & the Espers. Like I said just my opinion.

  • CANADA!

  • Older dub is way better for the storyline, because it leaves the movie more ambiguous...and the audicence is like...'whaaaatsss going on???'

  • Im partial to the original because that is what i grew up with in the late 80's and early 90's. The new dub isn't bad at all .......but how come no one ever reviews the PSP UMD dub!?!? It's actually pretty good!!!

  • The newer dub is far better on the ears and on the old conscience too.

  • I prefer the new dub now, even though it did take some time to get used to, mostly because the new actors make the kids sound like real kids.

  • I thought the original english dub was better acted, although the newer dub made the film more sense
