Damn, the stage frame with the ropes! I was at the NYC show on this tour in the row of seats one up from the floor. A friend was supposed to join me and I was itching to have him show up because I wanted to shed my backpack and dive into the insanity on the floor... but he never showed. It damn near killed me :(
Pretty hate machine is my fav album. Can't beat the energy of an artist first album. That's also why I like Nirvana's bleach album the best. Just something special about the artist not knowing they will be music's biggest influences yet.
Before NiN, Trent was in the super-industrial band Pigface, and It was WAY harder than anything NiN did. -This is sheer genius, and ALWAYS has been. And shame on anyone for even suggesting Korn, or Linkin Park can even compare. Godsmack? REALLY?! come on.
Enjoy, because this is what music was before the tidal wave of generic cancer took over.
@cherrylipsbrunette His voice still makes me horny. It's not the lyrics or his physical look so much (which has changed, yes, I admit it :( ), but what he does with sound, minor key, and esp. when he drops his voice in agony or whatever. :P And that doesn't seem to have changed much. O_o
NIN, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, Front 242, Poeise Noire, Skinny Puppy, etc. were all great bands but NIN are the most popular. These were great bands too so don't forget them
Pretty Hate Machine sounds like it took influence from Depeche Mode and Twitich-era Ministry, but still very much its own thing. I love the ambiance of the synths on Pretty Hate Machine. The best snyth album ever made (Along with classic Depeche Mode).
its hard to believe a kick ass band like Nine Inch Nails came out in 1989, at a time when all bands were complete shit. i think Nine Inch Nails was atleast 10 years ahead of there time. to this day, i havent heard any band outhere that sounds anything like nine inch nails, both musically and theme of songs.the only band that could come any close to sounding similar or having similar lyrics is depeche mode , but even depeche mode sounds diffierent, mostly because of the different singing.
To me their music always sounded a good 5-10 years ahead of their time. PHM was made in 89 but the electronic element of the album was used by 90's dance music all the way unto the mid to late 90's.
The Downward Spiral album STILL sounds like it could be released tomorrow.
i didn't know he didn't like this song i thought that was "kinda i want to"
i think maybe if he doesn't like the song it would be because the lyrics make it kind of obvious what he's talking about. so it's kinda personal.. i dunno... i still think it sounds great anyway
I personally love "Pretty Hate Machine" out of all of his work. But then again, I was 11 when it first came out and I was immediately drawn to it. It's a shame because this song as well as "Kinda I Want To" are a few of my all-time fav songs. Guess we'll ever hear him perform it live ever again, eh? I would love to hear the new line-up play "Maybe Just Once" as well.
@SimonRivas Yeah, both those lines have always made me cringe, but I'm willing to overlook a clunky lyric when the music is so damn incredible. And fortunately Reznor has progressed substantially as a lyricist since then, so I can look back at the occasional dud line and smile indulgently :-)
yeah I never thought they would play "The Way Out Is Through" on the 2009 Tour from The Fragile era 99-00 now Trent is 44 and it still sounds fucking amazing. Love how they are doing Now I'm Nothing-Terrible Lie on this Tour. Reminds me of the lolla 1991 days of course.
PHM had a big impact on me as electronica type music producer, NIN pretty much brought Industrial Rock to the "mainstream" in the United States...of course there were bands like Ministry and Skinny Puppy in that scene as well. Most of it was over in Europe and even today.
I dunno about a "Madonna" song per say...but it does sound quite personal based on the lyrics, then again...theres alot of NIN songs with personal feelings. Mostly means hes not going up there spitting bullshit out of his mouth ya know..Trent is just fucking amazing...NIN has to be one of my fav bands ever.
Yeah, it must bring up things from his past that he is probably over by now, and needs not be reminded of. Probably a part of his recovery is to not delve into things that stir up deep-rooted pain. Most of the songs on "Purest Feeling" and PHM are all quite heart-wrenchingly personal.
They do not play this song live anymore because Reznor said in an interview that it "sounds like a Madonna song"! I do not think that he likes this song very much. Personally, I love this song. The interview was in some NIN auto-biography I book I read.
@KoRnYwAyZ and thats why you took time out of your busy schedule to look up an old/obscure nine inch nails song/performance, to make this one comment... bravo /: l
@Plur307 Well, seems like they are doing a good job at being remembered seeing they been around 17 years when most all the other NuMetal bands died off. Don't be so stupid man ppl will remember them in 10 years ofcourse. No one talks about these goons anymore NIN so they are pretty much already forgotten by the mass.
@KoRnYwAyZ It's really fun how you turn down NIN and call the fans nerds. Especially when it's out of this kind of music and it's inspiration that korn, among alot of other bands, were ever made. Without music like this, you wouldn't have anything to listen to at all, period. The thing about reznor is that he has made up his own music and inspired others, witch korn never did. So just stfu and move on to watch mainstream shit that people already been doing 10 years before korn, I don't mind.
@eggfleece indeed, you turn your back on alot of guys... but bend over aswell. Sorry "friend" I don't swing that way... or rather... "swim" that way since you love to talk about your sperm ocean.
@prod1gy3000 You're a gelatinous tapeworm that feeds of the shit that NIN pumps in your ears making you think it's "good" music. You're an ass and Trent Reznor is a clown... so I guess it's safe to say that all NIN fans are total ASSCLOWNS.
@anna291980 I don't play in a band nowdays. I was in a band for about for a couple of years in 2004-2006. The music was Doom metal sorta.. but I couldnt put a label on it really. I played bass. After that everyone got bored with it and left me and the lead guitarist. We just jammed after that until he moved away and I havent played in any band since.
i would rather be there for this 1 performance than any of the new shows! This is a great demostration of trent performing the arts and it generates a great atmosphere which would have been awesome to be apart of. Sorry to say it but it makes his performances of today look stale. However i understand everything has to change with time. Great artist
This song is amazing, think the chorus with that heavy synthesizer and drumming makes it fucking amazing and then Richard's guitar as someone had noticed. In a previous comment. Yeah this is kinda like a sad type deep emotion song, None of NIN songs are like real gloomy it all just provokes something inside I guess. Every album keeps you guessing then its so different than the previous, which is what makes Trent and the gang so fucking amazing
I know people wanna make fun of the lyrics but when I hear a man talking like this all I can think is "wow he must have been hurt REAL BAD". I mean come on, as laughable as lyrics like "Now I'm slipping on the tears you made me cry, How could you turn me into this after you just taught me how to kiss you" are, it shows you he has emotion and he was hurt extremely. I'm sure the woman who did this to him regrets it because now he exposed her for who she is. Ok runnin out of room now so yea.
I've not known anyone to want to make fun of these lyrics and anyone who does is a faux-macho tool who's distant from any kind of emotion (sadly that's quite a lot of people though.)

Laughable? These lyrics are fucking awesome. I wish I wrote lyrics like these. I can FULLY relate to this song.

I love NIN with every fiber of my being but sometimes the lyrics drift into the VERY VERY MELODRAMATIC area.

I've not known anyone to want to make fun of these lyrics and anyone who does is a faux-macho tool who's distant from any kind of emotion (sadly that's quite a lot of people though.)

I am sure this was done at the video bar. I have some of the footage and that was what it was labeled on screen in the lower right hand corner.
