  • nicely done dude

  • I Like the Dire Straights and Robert Cray flavors you incorporate

  • @bluescanfly1981: thanx, but I am more into Dire Straits than Robert Cray - just mixed up many things I like.

  • Nice....

  • Really nice job! Did you make the the background track? I'd appreciate if you would email it to me.

  • can you please please let me know what software (assuming you use a computer) to record what you do on youtube? (By the way, great playing). I have been trying with no luck for months now. I know my way around a PC, so, I dont need detailed instructions. Just, what software is being used. Thanks so much.

  • I am using a quickcam Pro 9000 from logitech and a mixing console (audio-mixer) connected to the microphone input from my computer. You can choose the audio-device via the quickcam software so you can make good audio along with a good video quality. No other software than the webcam software is required.

  • smooth and yet personal style.. nice dude

  • this so sick, just love it, btw where did u get the background composition?

  • fucking dirty solo man

  • You are way to goood for youtube... Thanks for sharing

  • thx for appreciating. Here are so many cool musicians to spent hundreds of years listening to all that great music

  • Still watching it over and over. Is that 3r chord a G7? It looks like a 320010.

  • I play Gsus4 resolving to G (G7sus to G7 would also work well)

  • VERY NICE

  • Pretty cool ;)

  • Ziemlich nice...Ich denke ich werd dir dann bald mal wieder nen Besuch abstatten. Und dann heissts: I'm in your care ;)

    Mfg Cronix

  • @hatefulthoughts: I will take care of you :-)

  • what guitar you used? amp? how you got this sound!

  • Fender Stratocaster with Texas Specials and a pearly gates humbucker on the bridge-position.

Used a Hughes & Kettner Edition Blue Amp on clean-channel - no real magic.

  • good job man ! from my point of view it sounds more knopfler than clapton but as you know it must be a compliment ;-) do you play with mediator ?

  • Knopfler made me want to play guitar and Clapton was one of the guitarists which I studied indepth.

    What is mediator??

  • oh sorry I thought u had the same word that we have in french! I wanted to say "do you play with a pick ?"

  • I play with a pick and use middle and ringfinger occassionally in addiion. Just watch my other videos and you will see.

  • I used to listen a lot of both Knopfler and Clapton.

    What is "Mediator"???

  • Amazing

  • ~Has a nice Willie Nelson feel to it...~~

  • it might just be an improv. but you need to play with soul and feel. and this dude has all of it. so stop dissing him.

  • I've had this favorited for a long time.. I play it almost every day while I'm working. Don't let the 'average' comments discourage you.. I've been playing for a few years now and I hope I can play with such ease and style someday. If that means I'm average, so be it :) I really enjoy this take on Old Love~

  • Thank you very much. It feels good to give you something with my playing

  • why is everyone satin this is so great????its really just an improv...and nothin special

  • agreed

    very average

  • Maybe some people like the way I play. If you don't then make your own thing. If you would comment on everything average in the world you would not have much time remaining to do anything else.

  • It's videos like this that make me want to quit practicing.

This is so good and I am so weak.

I can't begin to imagine the number of years and hundreds of hours of practice to become this good.

    Excellent!!!

  • It is all about passion which results in practice. I am not very gifted so you can do it, too. Just keep on even if you may sometimes feel not ever reaching your goal. Finally it is a worthy self-experience.

  • Man this is soo good, I can hear some of your Mark Knopfler influenced feel lol.

  • Nice twist on a great song....has a little kind of Willie Nelson feel to your solo....~~

  • hey, i really like your version! if you want, check mine version :), cheers!

  • I love how you made it your own song. Its like it has this whole different meaning to than the original, great job!

  • Excellente...what is the pedal effect? thx...

  • No effects at all: just a Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 15 in the clean channel and some reverb - that's all

  • this is brilliant. may i ask if you have the tab for this?

  • I improvised so there are no tabs available, sorry

  • Mark Knophler style....awesome!

  • Sultans of Swing from Dire Straits made me to want to play guitar. otherwise I would have probably become a programmer or alcoholic :-)

  • Awesome . Darn good.

  • Check out my version of old love on my page...is the second song!

  • Impossible. You've learned with Clapton.

Dude, you're the best guitarrist I've seen in Youtube. That's really playing guitar!

  • Dude.. I put this on my favorites list about 2 years ago, and I still love coming back and watching/listening to it. It's so fucking awesome. Great job. And thanks for posting it for us all to enjoy.

  • Hey Krissi, auch wenn ich mich nicht so auskenne finde ich, dass sich das echt Klasse anhört.

Und weißt ja I-COD rockt ;)

  • nicely done. keep it up!

  • wow you could roll that up in papers and sell it as the mellowest weed around! I like it you made it your own

  • DUDE!!! u have to give me that backing track.

  • best yet

  • 才能あるね

    プロのarrangerになれるよ、きっと。

  • I like it!

  • WOW. i love your style. A+

  • you play well. nice feeling and guitar :P

  • awesome

  • Wie immer saugudd mein Schnitzel

  • !!! RESPECT !!! I add you to my favorites

  • cool guitar feeling.

  • eric clapton woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • What does this mean?

  • it means eric claptons awsome and that hes like a god

  • Nobody is like god but everybody has got something inside which is god like - discover it and enjoy the clapton inside of you ;-)

  • ya man but its a metaphore saying claptons like a god

  • Hey guys, this is my teacher and i`m very happy because he teach me how to rock with such a awesome feeling^^

    till monday..........

  • Hi Max,

sorry, kann Dir leider nicht schreiben und bekomme immer eine Fehlermeldung. Klappt es jetzt bei Dir mit dem Winamp? Lg, Kris

  • I know this may sound like a terrible cheek, but would you consider tabbing this or showing it in slow as a class as it is SO DAMN GOOD and despite 2 months of practice, I can't get past the first little riffs!!

  • Sorry, but this is a horrible task to tab down the whole solo - i am now on my holidays. Maybe I can help you in another way???

  • learn your scales...key to all soloing...with that you can go anywhere you want

  • oh, and Eric would be proud!

  • I wish I could play guitar for a living...

  • ...practice and if you also like to teach guitar then you can easily make a living playing guitar.

  • hey man, your felling, damn good! but if you play for 21 years I understand it, no matter about it, youre great!!

  • great!!...complimenti hai carpito l'essenza di old love tanto di cappello!

  • GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!

  • damn your good how long did it take you to play that

  • It was a first take - even had better moments but this is ok. I play guitar for 21 years now it has become my income and my passion.

  • This is fantastic ! Could I have the backing track too pls

  • I give up! You inspired me to take up the guitar after 20 years of absence, but it'd take me anothe 20 years to get those riffs.. absolutely brilliant and I wish I could slow you down to get each part!! Any chance of seeing what the other hand's doing too? !!

  • One of my fave tunes, and you have done it proud. Lovely clean sound, well done.

  • Great job and great tone! I also like Ritchie Haven's version of "Old Love".

I would also like to get the backup track for this if I could. Thanks!

  • Awsome playing, you sound alot like knopfler!

  • nice playing!! makes me wanna wear sunglasses cause ur cover has that coolness in it

  • great impro for this song send it to eric!from zaerfui france marseille

  • great playing, what scales are you using? it sounds very jazzy at times. where can i get that backing track?

  • Backing-Track can be ordered by sending me your email-Addy.

I am using: blues-scale, a-aeolian, arpeggios with added ninths and suspensions (that's really a bit of sounding jazzy or Knopfler/Gilmour-like. Maybe some chromatic-target tones inbetween. Greetings, KRis

  • Good work man, I really like that a lot. Also, if you could email that backing track it would be appreciated more than you know. Once again, nice playing.

  • Send me your Email and I will send you the backing track.

  • Excelente!! ..muy bueno... awesome..

  • Bravo. Really great. This is one of my favourite song and you play it really good.

  • Great job improvising - really enjoyed it. You inspire me to practice more.

Any way you could send me the back-up track to practice on?

    Thanks

  • Send me your email and I'll give you the backing track.

    Thanks for appreciating my playing.

  • well done :)

  • magnificent! ^^

  • solid

  • hey man where did u get ur bakup music and tabs from, cuz ive bin looking everywhere 4'em if u could tell me that would b greatly appreciated

  • I can send you the backing-track via email - just gimme your email-addy.

No tabs available because it was an improvised solo.

  • Are you in standard tuning?

  • Yes, standard tuning - obviously, isn't it!?

  • oh i love this song...you did such a good job also!

  • what the hell u talking about..this isnt fake

  • FAKE VID!

  • What should I have faked about my playing???

The only wrong thing about that clip is that the sync between audio and video does not properly work.

  • one word to decribe it brilliant fairplay to you man keep up the good work

  • thanks dude, i really appreciate it. ill start listenin to more of those dudes and goin for the arpeggios

  • dude that was friggin awesome. what kind of stuff did you practice to be able to improv like that?

  • What do I practice? Scales, arpeggios with ninths and fourths (unlike the shredders who prefer simple triads) - ninths and fourths within arpeggios will sound like Gilmour and Knopfler.

I spent years listening to Knopfler, Clapton, The three Kings, SRV etc.... copied the licks but never sounded exactly like them - that's personal inflection and style.

currently I am practicing sweeping and alternate picking (my weakness).

  • hey listen man...ur fucking excellent

  • Nice and tender I like the way you slowed it down it let's you breathe ... you have a lotta great clapton like riffs but you you are very well your own guitar player . You are well rehearsed and I'll be returning to study your mojo. Have a look at my rendition of Old Love on the stvolo channel.

  • i think you are amazing

  • where do you get the back tracking?

  • Very nice!

  • This is the first video to get me to post. Inpsired playing, your emotion really comes through. Made me reflective listening to your playing. you should record, much less talented do so. Definitely hear the Knopfler influence. I had to listen to your whole song, I couldn't just turn it off. If I could only channel through my guitar like you do. Loved your phrasing. Oh well, gotta practice more. :] If this were a concert, my lighter would be held up high right now....

    Thanks man. Joester

  • Thank you very much for the appreciation

  • This video is quality... love it

  • SICK! def a fav

  • Wow! You're sure can express you pain through this solo! Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. 5/5.

  • That is some soloing man. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have been playing guitars for about 4 years although there have been gaps. But I can tell you have done a lot of work. Just one question, when you practice blues solo's, do you just fiddle with the pentatonic or is there other things you deliberate try and do? Just wanted to know how you became so good.

  • I started playing with the pentatonics and listened to all the blues-greats until I was fed up with the limitations of the blues-gerne and started listening to jazz. Ended up mixing blues and jazz-concepts. That's my ideal!!!

  • also, did u play this fingerstyle like Knopfler?

  • No, I play hybrid style: using the pick and the rest of my fingers for a different touch (e.G. playing thirds or sixths)

  • Knopfler was my first hero. Sultans of swing was the song which made me want to play the guitar

  • Can u please tell me the arppegio?? that u use at 3:55?? awesome, Old love has been one of my favorite guitar songs since I started and I also love worship Mark Knopfler. I can tell from your style that it is very similar to his.

  • This is a simple C-shape Arpeggio (as G-major with fourth finger starting on the tenth fret on the A-String).

Move a C-Form the the tenth fret and play an arpeggio with a ninth or fourth added and it will sound like Knopfler or Gilmour. Just played the changes: am-dm-G7(sus4) and sometimes arpeggiated.

Good practice to add fourths and ninths to arpeggios in order not to sound dull like the shredders.

  • do you add a ninth or change the third for a fourth? coz what you sayin isnt clear. and these 2 chords are different (ninth or supended 4)

  • I play the third as well as the fourth (just like suspending a simple D-Shape (Dsus4) resolving to the third).

Just playing the fourth would sound more open - I intend to play this arpeggio to sound royal and proud.

Just do it in the way it sounds good to you. I love ninths as well as I love fourths and do combine them

  • i play both the fourth and and the third - has more resolution. suspensions without the third sound too modern to my ears

  • amazing, loved it

  • great! i like the clapton style phrases..

  • Awesome clip. Old Love is one of my Clapton favorites (and a song I wish I could play better).

  • I guess nobody will ever be satisfied with his own playing because you can always be better than you actually are!

  • Thats so true. And I know I need practice. I rarely get a chance to play with other musicians. I've got some of my work on YouTube (just look up my name) but I feel like... I need some more experience. :P

Why can't ol' Clapton jam with people like us? ;)

  • It would be a dream to play with Clapton or BB or Stevie Ray (he was unbelievable).

The first 5 years playing guitar I just played along with my favourite records before playing in my first blues-band.

Experience does not take an end - it is a life long journey. I practice 2-3 hours a day besides teaching to become a better player.

If you don't have a band then play with play-Alongs. There are some good ones around - it is fun - like me playing "old love"

  • I love Old Love, but I'm nowhere near that good (maybe on a start, I hope?). I've been playing for the past five years (just about), but I don't know of any blues people to play with. I have a friend of mine that does Rockabilly, so I get to play a few Beatles-ish tunes at time (I love the Beatles, by the way). Still, its not the same.

Where would I find some good tracks to play along with?

  • Look on emule for backing tracks and you will get some good tracks to jam along with

  • look on "emule" for "backing tracks" and you will find pretty playalongs for every style

  • I don't use emule, but I have begun doing some searches for backing tracks. Thanks for the advice.

  • oh yea maybe just use your neck pickup man, would sound better, your sound is quite thin

  • neck pickup is nice but too much middles for my personal taste. During the solo I used the humbucker which is quite more trebly than usual single-coils - feels more aggressive.

  • really sweet playing man

    you got the blues feel!

  • Blues is the root of my playing. For the past 10 years I experimented with jazzy stuff, arpeggios to give more tonal possibilities to my playing. It is a life long search for complete connection with the sounds within yourself!

    Thanx

  • nice playnig ;))

  • nice guitar....fender is next on my list for sure.

  • I can't imagine anything else than playing strats - tried some others, but the strat is sexy, female, versatile and nice to hug ;-)

  • 5 Star Rating

  • I was talking to a friend about this clip the other day. At first I thought the player was just coping Clapton licks, then I realized he was doing his own solo. It's one thing to craft a solo for 8 or 16 bars, but to keep it fresh and interesting for an entire 4 minute song requires a TON of skill and creativity. This player has it. I am so impressed!!

  • Wow! This should've been rated higher.

    You've got the feel =)

  • This is to TheDigo. Yes!! Hes is soloing the whole song and in my opinion very well done. What do you mean he is not playing the song? So he is soloing and not playing!!! What the heck!!

  • the song isnt one big solo

  • I just wanted to play along this song to express my feelings which I was not able to channel through my vocals so I soloed. What is wrong with it? I felt the essence and played what my heart sung - guitar is like vocals.

  • Nice touch,thoughtful phrasing.I enjoyed it very much.Thanks,keep up the good playing.-Dub

  • Thanx! Took me some years to know what to play and what notes to leave out! Still learning ;-)

  • Hi, I'm Dub's rhythm guitarist and also enjoyed your playing. I was reading your reply when the song started playing and I couldn't leave until you were finished!

    Anne DeBrie

  • This is the most appreciation one could get - thank you very much about being so touched about my playing

  • Hey klasse, wie sagt man; Du weisst genau, was du nicht spielen sollst;klingt 'n bischen komisch aber manchmal ist weniger eben mehr;Du fühlst dich super ein und machst den Song zu Deinem, ich finds klasse@the digo:we all know the song ,but don't you think, that it's important to have personal note within your playing?Anyways ,great version

  • love it, awesome playing!

  • nice tone though

  • By the way TheDigo, I see that you enjoy writing critical comments about other people's art. How about sharing some of your own stuff babe? We're all waiting.

  • Hey The Digo, you're pretty good at being critical of what other artists do. How about showing us some of your stuff? We're all waiting babe.

  • You dont have to be good to criticize other people, simon cowell cant sing yet he criticizes everyone

  • Digo, so you're a professional critic? Unless you're being paid, I suspect jealousy and envy has overtaken you. Just let it go and enjoy music and art for what it is, not what your critical mind wants it to be.

  • Hmm okay, i love the song but your not playing Old Love your just basically soloing the whole song

  • Accute observation.
