actually theres a band that sounds like Cradle Of Filth. check out Lamia Antitheus I promise if you like Old Cradle you will fall in love with this band. Don't spam me till you check it out or else you will be missing out.
@Critic863 OK then fine. Suit yourself and miss out. Lamia Antitheus is probably the only band out there that can replicate Dani's vocals and the infamous atmosphere of COF and honestly does a better job at it than newer Cradle.
@Critic863 Well if both bands are good, I'd listen to them both, it won't hurt you to do so. Or If the original band started making good music in the beginning then started to go downhill and another band came along capturing the essence and golden era of the other, original band. I'd go with the Imitation.
@blackplague616 - Started good music in the beginning? Cradle of Filth did, that's what they're famous for. Look up some facts before you start saying stuff like that, dude. Their first couple albums made them go uphill, Midian and Nymphetamine made them go ever further up, Thornography made them go down a bit, now this new album is making them go back up. Capture the essence? You mean stole the essence, right? No one likes rip-off bands.
@Critic863 Yeah they've gone downhill for the older fans of The Demo Days, Dusk and Principles, even for some Midian and Scorched Erotica fans. Popularity does not necessarily mean or create a good album so do not pull of some CD sells statistics on me kid, I know what Cradle has accomplished. As for Lamia, Stealing means, well stealing riffs and lyrics which they haven't done. Just cause you don't like bands that sound SIMILAR to others doesn't mean everyone else is like you.
@blackplague616 - Who cares about the older CoF fans? They're trying to appeal to a newer generation because that's where their money is. If they made every album sound the same, then it would be boring as hell. Apparently to you, "stealing" and "imitating" are interchangeable words. Also, what's with the "kid" thing? You say it as if it were an insult. Plus I never said that anyone else is like me, nor do I want everyone to be.
@Critic863 How fucking stupid are you?! older fans made them into what they are today. Thats COF's problem if they sold out or whatever, good for them since they are raking up Hot Topic kid money and getting rich of it. You know theres something called influences and everyone is inspired by others. So technically everyone is an imitation, no one is original, not me or you. I can be more insulting cause your acting like a childish bitch right about now. Whats up with that?
@blackplague616 - The better question is, how stupid are you? You really think that they'll make good money just appealing to the older fans? Imitating a band implies that they were inspired by them. CoF is original because they have a unique singer, complex lyrics, and a very creepy atmosphere to their music. How am I acting like a childish bitch? You're the one who's all butthurt just because I am presenting you with facts.
@Critic863 If COF didn't care about old fans why did they go back to their Midian roots for Godspeed? Dani said it himself that he was trying to appeal OLDER AND NEWER fans back. As for the imitation thing, COF once "imitated" a couple of bands in their time such as Emperor and Hecate Enthroned just to name a few. COF is not original in the sense that they sound like just about most symphonic gothic/black metal bands such as Graveworm, Hecate Enthroned, Chthonic, etc. It's not a bad thing either
@blackplague616 how can Cradle be 'imitating' these bands when they released records before almost all of them except Emperor? Hecate Enthroned were a pure COF clone at the start. you got it backwards. H.C ripped off COF.
anyway. COF's sound was that gothic black/death metal hybrid and it was very unique for the time. there was no lyricist like Dani in metal. the closest was the guy from Skyclad in terms of prose. nobody else.
@Critic863 a ton of bands have "unique" singers, complex lyrics and creepy atmospheres along with COF. It's all a matter of opinion if you think thats ALL that makes COF original. What a retarded statement think before you fucking speak and explore the world and stop being such a closed minded childish bitch. And I'm not butthurt at all just because your the one spewing a bunch of opinions you call facts.
@blackplague616 - You're just sitting over there cussing at me and denying everything I say. And by the way, you can't really compare CoF to gothic/black metal bands since CoF is not under that category. If CoF did imitate other bands, then why would you like to listen to an imitation of an imitation? Isn't that just descending the ladder? And there you go with the "childish bitch" thing again. I respect you, now why can't you respect me? Seriously, gain a little maturity please.
@Critic863 I deny what you say because half of what you say is simply not true and I use profanity to express shock & anger. Yeah you could compare COF to the Gothic Extreme "Black Metal" bands like Graveworm & Chthonic but not the the actual Symphonic Black Metal bands like Emperor. People listen to imitations of imitations its just the way it always has been and will be.Then if you wan't to be treated with respect then call your opinions, opinions not facts if they can't be proven
@Critic863 yeah, COF didn't really imititate anybody that's why they took the metal world by storm. you could argue they dumbed down the black metal sound, but that's not really true as Dusk and Cruelty were quite complex albums in their own right and certainly sounded like nothing else at the time. they opened the doors for bands like Dimmu etc, who were nothing but a cheap Gehenna clone before they changed their sound
@lamentate07 yeah COF did imitate they wanted to sound like most death metal acts sounded at the time in their early demos. Bal Sagoth and Emperor were probably the bands that opened the gate to most symphonic black metal bands. COF took that and added their touch and some gothic tendancies. Anyways im not debating towards talent, im just debating the facts that everyone copies each other. Dani was popular in the mainstream but there were other underground acts that wrote similar music to COF
@blackplague616 hmmm...not sure about Bal Sagoth. their first album was more of a tentative hybrid of black and death. i'm not sure it really influenced anybody. Starfire was one of the best symphonic metal albums of its time thoiugh, one of the only genuinely symphonic metal albums, even moreso than Nightside, but i'm not sure how influential it was, if at all.
well the fact that 'everyone copies each other' isn't the issue. what matters is style. who has their own style. and COF have theirs.
@lamentate07 i do agree with you that COF were influenced by bands like Emperor though, but they put the 'elements' together in a fairly unique way for their time. I'm not disputing the fact that they were influenced by those earlier black metal bnads. that is undeniable. their demo was more death metal, that's true, but they never completely shed those early influences either. the death metal ones.
@lamentate07 COF is a hybrid like many bands. they all have their sound style of course, but the general discussion I had with Critic863 was leaning towards the simple face I find no one original. At some point and time everything has been done before. Also everyone takes bits and pieces and turns them into their own signature art piece so to speak.
@blackplague616 yeah everyone takes bits and pieces, but few actually create distinctive styles. that's my point, and that's what i believe. COF are one of those bands, like Emperor, that have, undoubtedly achieved this. It's not an either/or situation here. Some bands put together their influences distinctively, and may even innovate in the process, while most do not. I"m weary of these kind of arguments because, more often than not, they lead a general apathy about the creative process
@blackplague616 and this apathy, i believe, is part of the reason so much metal is generic as hell nowadays. There is always room for a personal signature, but it's difficult, esp in this day and age when so much ground has already been covered by great bands.
i'm hopeful though, even though i haven't been that impressed with the newer metal bands of the last 10 years.
@lamentate07 I agree, but creating a signature sound requires trial and error, time and effort. Something most people don't care about or don't want to go through. Being generic is just the easy thing to do.
somewhere out there in the underground, there is probably some musician out there creating some amazing music.
This album is cool but I remember when Damnation came out in 2003: that album topped all the others for me. It is the most intricate, progressive, and above all, DARK album Cradle has ever produced.
@dmh091 Nothing sounds darker than Dusk and Her Embrace ! This album is a vampiric masterpiece, combining passionate love with malice and unbearable madness. The ambience is incredibly gloomy and blackish, the keyboards are hypnotic, Dani's high screams are maddening and the female voices are very raw. Its almost scary at some point, stifling.
Oh please don't shit on other bands. You know, some people prefer Nile over Cradle of Filth and that's my case. But old Cradle of Filth is awesome nonetheless.
I have a question...who else is bothered that they replaced Rosie Smith with Ashley Ellyon (Misspelled?) from Abigail Williams? (If you haven't heard of abigail williams, they are a black metal band with hardcore vocals going on...I wish they had black metal vocals...that'd complete them) I think its outrageous anyway...OH!! And check out ceremonail castings kids! Black metal from the darkest depths of oregon. ^_^ lol
im not trying to start shit but i was very disappointed when cradle moved away from black metal and towards the goth metal movement that all these little kids like. vampire, principle, cruelty were bad ass fuckin albums and i think they should go back to that style. i think they should stop thinking about what is gonna sell albums and get back to the fucking metal
I don't care if they change their style, I just thought those couple albums were weaker than the rest. :S As long as they can change their style and stay strong, I don't mind.
They've actually gone back to this style - have ya heard the new album? If not, I'd suggest checking it out. I was pretty disappointed with albums like "Nymphetamine" and "Thornography" too, but "Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder" has rekindled my faith in this band. =P
Your right PUNKANDMETAL90. While it isnt as deep as this album, it is well worth listening to and getting into. The 13th Ceasar and Tragic Kingdom and Shat Out of Hell will grab you and kick your ass. GODSPEED ON THE DEVILS THUNDER!! CHECK IT OUT BECAUSE CRADLE OF FILTH HAS RETURNED WITH A KICK YOUR ASS ALBUM!!!!!
I was just about to post exactly the same comment :). If you compare Thornography to Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder then you'll see a big change upwards.
its something special with that voice in the very begining that like so damn much

I cant tell about Thornography cause I dont have it...but Nymphetamine is a really great album!!

This and Midian were by far Cradle's best works. Period.
wurdulak34 2 years ago 26
@wurdulak34 Personally, I think Cruelty and the Beast was better than Dusk and Midian combined.
