why journalists and critics are always writing not-so-good reviews for tori? to be honest with you, i find aats much more better than adp, and i was not really expecting that. this album has some really fantastic songs that nobody else would have singed nowadays!
I'll say this.....the critics pan her because she INSISTS that you induldge her lesser ideas to get to the better ones.
She writes some great stuff (police me) but at the same time she writes too much and not all of them are winners....not all of them are done when she releases them. overall...she is pan'd unfairly, but she could have a pretty serious effect that if she was concerned about it. (she isn't)
that being said...this song is one of her finest, her best in years.
Totally agreed. Of course, if you ask me, it does seem that the general number of douchebags at concerts is getting out of control over the last decade. And, their levels of douchebaggery is reaching epic levels, too.
Call me old fashion, but I go to concerts to listen to LIVE music! Not scream at the performer, check my e-mail, send text messages, or take a phone call. Granted, I was holding a video camera during the show, so I could share it with you all. I am aware of the irony.
I remember when I saw Tori on the BFP tour in NY....this insipid girl came screaming out throughout the entire show, "Play Winter!" Like Tori was some sort of jukebox....finally Tori told her to simmer down. Wish she would do that more often!!
To be fair, all the flashes you saw during "Lady in Blue" are mostly the whole throng of press that you can see right in front of where I'm standing. And, that's kind of the point of doing a showcase at SXSW ... press coverage!
But, under normal concert conditions, I totally agree with you.
I really loved the beekeeper, and im only 20(for anyone not keeping up with all the conversation, someone mentioned, being able to relate to TB because of being middle aged) but I related in the songs about fearing the loss of loved ones and losing loved ones, because I have already lost quite a few loved ones. Other than relating, I just happen to think that most of the songs on the beekeeper were really great. It was definitely not my favorite album, but still a great album.
I loved the Beekeeper as well and I am not even 30. I think that Parasolo, Original Sinsuality, Barons of Suburbia, Toast, Sweet the Sting are really great songs! One does not need to be over 40 in order to appreciate some kind of music. For sure, I find TB deeper and more complex than ADP...
You are definitely right! TB is one of her most elaborate yet simplest albums! The energy, the melody, the power that come from this album are incredible! I'm only 18 and I love all of her albums... it doesn't matter how ald someone is, music has a deeper meaning... Sleeps with butterflies and Sweet the sting are for sure some of her greatest songs!
yeah really, i'm a toriphille and i'm 15, is that even possible? i really liked the ideas of beakeeper over the ideas in american doll posse, i cry over songs like ribbons undone, did you see her interview on that song? i think i have it favourited. not sure though.
It is luckily possible that young people love Tori's music.... However, the last two albums were so heavily criticized, and I don't understand why!!!! The concept of The beekeeper is really understandable, and also the idea of ADP, as you have said, is immense... Anybody had done such a thing.... Ribbons undone is powerful and extremely emotional... Very glad to see that you love Tori, even if you're only 15!!! I discovered her only this year, and it's a shame I didn't listen to her earlier!!!
probably because the listened since `92 are to old to appreciate growth and change in an artist. People didn't like ADP and Beekeeper because it was to instrumental (tbh, i din't really like many songs on ADP but some of them are good), but Beekeeper on the other hand, although not as good as scarlets walk or anything before it besides Strange Little Girls, and To Venus and Back, it was still great, Choirgirl, Under the Pink, and Pele will never come back, artists go forward, not backward.
Yes, you're definitely right... It would be really ridiculous if she made the same album twice....that would not match her sperimentalism and her passion to change her style continuously... that's why I love her (with the exception of SLG, because i hate cover albums), in everything she has made so far... Not many times has that happened to me (the few exceptions being Björk and few other artists), and I hope this album will be as powerful as her previous ones...!!!
I agree, but I adore Strange Little Girls. For me, Raining Blood is fucking awesome. If you have not seen in type Raining Blood liv Houston, the vocalization at the end is incredible, incredible. I'm not in Love is entrancing too, but to each their own. RIGHT GUYS!!!! lol
I started listening to her when I was fourteen, in '03 or something. I personally think ADP was unbelievable, but I enjoy every single album of hers (YKTR excluded lol.)
@ first I was surprised by the Beekeeper BUT when I saw her perform it on tour ... I was blown away from the Original SInsuality opening to the pulsating Beekeeper, down to the last crumb of toast, it was all fantastic and made me fall in love with the album as I have will all her work.
*shrug* I loved The Beekeeper. But I am of Tori's age and by now, I have been through a lot of similar experiences to those which seem to have inspired TB. Musical tastes aside, a lot of Tori's fans (younger? dunno) seem very uncomfortable/uninterested/downright repelled by what she made musically of her experiences in the worlds of newfound maternity, the onset of middle age, and the inevitable deaths of people she loves along the way. The second half of life has a lot of this stuff yanno. Deal
I think this is a very valid, if not terribly popular, point that you make. And, I have no problems with artists changing and evolving over their career. As a married, middle age woman and mother OF COURSE Tori's records won't all be BfP or FtCH. I respect that. My problem with Beekeeper wasn't the subject matter, so much as I thought she didn't find any real new or interesting ways to explore the subject matter. But, I'd never deny anybody their Beekeeper experience and more power to you! =)
Im 30 and as I grow older the newer songs have more meaning to me and I have had similar experiences but always a few years behind... but on the few times Ive met her Ive never had any trouble relating the way I would with a lot of ppl 15 years older than myself. I totally agree with your statement and may I add that she seems to attract people of a like mind.
Of the songs I've heard thus far, this is probably my favorite. I am wary and hope that these are not the best songs on the album or, like The Beekeeper, this will be one of the only Tori albums i do not buy. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised!!!
Just my thoughts ... while I did buy The Beekeeper, it certainly wasn't a great Tori album. I think we can all agree there. However, I've come to appreciate it more since its release and think with some brutal editing (say getting the track list down to maybe 10-12 songs) it could have been a good, but never great, album. However, all the songs I've heard from AAtS so far sound like a sonic combination of Scarlet's and Choirgirl. I'm really excited and hopeful about the new album!
this is going to sound so lovely on the album i love the flute tones on the synth she is playing . this song has the lounging 40's vibe which i LOVE. favorite song so far with curtain call
Well I'd get lots of plastic surgery if I could. I don't think that issue's really relevant, at all.
But, being a fan of her older stuff, you don't' even like this and "Curtain Call" at least a little bit?
Granted, it does sound like some of her more recent stuff, but I actually this sounds a lot more like the "old tori" than anything since "to venus and back".
Well Curtain Call is my favorite of the new bunch for sure.
And I never said I made up my mind about the new album. Just not real optimistic from these tracks. But I'll buy the album and hope Im proven wrong.
And the plastic surgery isn't really a big deal. Just seems kind of shallow for someone who's songs often deal with personal strength and inner beauty.
And just from a personal opinion, she looked better before.
Before... as in before the onset of any plastic surgery at all?... That'd have to be like around SW, right? Cuz, I think whatever you get done when yur younger, starts to look a bit different w/ age. However, I do believe that everyone has the right to feel good about themselves. I don't think that she would judge people based on their appearance, but perhaps, she can't help but judge herself when she looks in the mirror. That's allright tho, cuz, what is plastic but permanent make-up?
This is probably the nicest song I've heard from the upcoming album. Has the feel of some of her older stuff, but with a new flavor. I like this a lot. Might have to pick up the album just for this. Not that the other songs were bad... they were just... kind of typical of everything since Beekeeper.
give me 'thumbs down' all you want. i was, possibly still am, a bigger tori fan than most of you. But the sad fact is since Scarlett, it's been pretty bleak. ADP could have been great if she'd left off some of those embarrassingly stupid songs like Fat Slut. I liked Big Wheel, Roosterspur Bridge, Big Wheel, The Beauty of Speed, Digital Ghost, and even Teenage Hustling. The Beekeeper was, imo, her worst album and this sounds similar.
The album hasn't even come out and you've already made up your mind about it. I know people have their opinions about ADP and the Beekeeper, opinions that i don't agree with, but I don't see how ppl can judge AATS before it has even come out, it doesn't make any sense to me.
its been almost a year, and this is as impactful at this moment as it was at first listening... Thank you so much Tori for your gift to the world!!

But, I can see where you're coming from about being disappointed that she would have to get it to feel better.
