Are you using a pedal for the volume drop on the "La Grange" parts? I don't see you reaching for the pickup selector...Are you using pick and fingers for that same section as well? I find I use the pick for the D-string and my middle finger for the G-string...just sits well that way for me. I think Ed uses pick and fingers at least that's what I see on the Donnington live version of "HFT"...
@garbeaj Eddie flicked the pick up selector to the bass pick volume set real low on the original. I was doing that, but the volume dropped too much, so I set up a clean channel on the amp and switched back and forth. Definately use my fingers for those parts. I think Eddie used his rh fingers quite a lot. Donnington is about the only live footage I've been able to find of HFT live from that era.
@gatner1 Yes Donnington is the only clear footage, though Montreal is there, but very poor quality comparatively.
I have a Gibson '58 reissue Korina V that I just bought and I am getting used to using the pickup selector. It is a little different than what I am used to, but I am getting there. Eddie used his Kramer 5150 and a chorus w/ volume control live. I am studying the isolated album track to try to catch the precise points to flick the switch...
@gatner1 I think I may have figured out why the volume drops too much when you did the bass pickup volume drop trick as Eddie did it. I have an Orville by Gibson '58 reissue Korina Flying V that I tricked out a little with an RS Guitarworks old style Flying V wiring kit with Bumblebee caps and other goodies. I think your Epi V has the modern (late 60s and onwards) Flying V wiring. I had the same problem until I upgraded my wiring to the original '50s wiring schematic, now it works fine!

hey man what chord are you playing at 0:41 ?
KleptoManicKat 1 year ago
@KleptoManicKat It's an A chord, but I wrap my thumb around to grab an F# on the low E string, so it's kind of an F# minor. Hope that helps.
