What was the name of the first song my dad has played it many times when driving in his car lol, I love all music but one things for sure coming from young lad like me (20 years) is that old music never dies and rag, rock n roll, blues, jazz, stride piano,etc.. will never died out because people like you will keep it rocking!!!!!! :D
@michael18152 Haha it hasn't been tuned for years which suits the ragtime/honkytonk style I often play. For my more serious pieces I normally play my Steinway :-)
@michael18152 LOL -- you don't know ragtime -- this piano is just perfect! Mike, bless you for rescuing this piano from the junk shop and giving it a new life. I wish you'd put out an album played on this beauty, I'd buy it in a heart beat.
Ok, I've seen most of your videos and this is absolutely my favorite. I've just listened to it three times in a row. When it gets to about 2:20 it is just beyond description. I mean, I can't find words to say how good you are playing. Damn!
we need to get this mike on television he should be a star as there is no one better than him so lets vote and make him a star, he is a good cook too.
dude you are awesome with that piano. My buddies dad used to do old ragtime before he passed away and i once got him out to my moms house. she had an upright baby grand that was unfortunately out of tune he sat down at it and literally had the place rocking! you couldn't tell it was out of tune. you playing reminds me of that one fun day i had! KEEP ROCKIN' ONTHE IVORY!
@steveborders Apparently the piano was made in the late 1890's. I bought it from a second hand shop!! Thanks for your kind comments about my playing. Best wishes with your playing too!!
Mike - you've perfected the smile with the teeth, now all you need is the "Thank ya folks" at the end! Couldn't help chuckling along with this - absolute magic! What a tonic.
WOW, You are SOOO cute, and can play that piano too. I bet your in Australia??? All the CUTE guys are always in Australia! Winifred Atwell is buried in Australia I do believe! Laterz, LP
Great playing mate, I put two short pieces on here myself but since a stroke I've had to stop, let's have some more of what the doctor ordered from you soon.
Me and my dad used to play simultaneously, on two separate pianos, when I was about 13 upwards!Black and white Rag was one of my faves, it brings it all back to me that does!!
Fron the time I was about 8yo I grew up listening to Wonderful winnie. I used to play along to her records and probably drove the neighbours crazy, I used to take the front and top off my piano to get the sound and just "Go For It" my fav is still black and white rag... I love it.... Keep up the great work... your rendition bought back great memories, I was totally lost in your clip and a glass of port......... Thankyou from the bottom of mny heart
Hey Mike. Marvelous playing. I grew up listening to the wonder that was Winnie, but let's not forget the ever so slightly larger talent of Mrs Mills!!!! Keep it up. Well done you. Really entertaining and and a joy to see how much enjoyment you're getting out of it too.
Mike- What can I say. What a fantastic pianist you are and how you have brightened up a day for me. I have only just found you on here and want to hear much more from you.
Im in the UK and we have had nobody who can play like you since the late Glady Mills
Thank you very much! There is nothing more uplifting than the joy that music can give. Playing & having people enjoy my playing gives me much pleasure.
Ha ha! thats the Winnie influence rubbing off on him! She's famous for looking at the crowd, winking & grinning whilst playing! Couldnt help but notice the influence of her style that she had on him everytime he looks & smiles at the camera every now and again.
Bloody brilliant - How I envy you ! Thanks for the great playing - really got my feet tapping away. I`ll wait till there is no one home so that I can crank up the vloume !!
Sorry Mike, I stole your left hand and half your tunes! But now I can play party music too. I grew up on classical music and never tried to play any dance music but a few minutes of watching you clued me in nicely.
Glad you didn't mind the plagiarism because somehow you made it easy for me to figure out how to do it. Nice old piano. I used to be a piano tuner and naturally I considered what to do for it, but as Beethoven once said, "They want to tune my piano and spoil it!"
How did you get the honky tonk sound on the piano? I've heard of 3 methods - pinning the hammers, stretching brown paper over the strings and de-tuning one of the strings about 1 hertz sharp or flat - or is it something else?
I Love Honky Tonks, Great Job! All You Needed Was Some Rag-Times Cloths To Go With The Music. But Do You Mind Telling Me Why You Disabled The Rating System?
Your performance does Winnie's memory proud!! I wish I had your precision on the keyboard! My video seems very tame after the energy of this one! Keep up the excellent work and most importantly keep posting the videos!!
Great medley! Superb, clean playing, and highly original takes on the pieces. I like the Victorian 'birdcage' upright,as well. Do you know the date/maker?
Take that as a compliment after hearing you play-totally awesome!! The make is an M.W.(quite ironic!) Stein-dated about late 1800s. Be sure to keep up the great playing-a legend in the making!
Thanks Mike for your music! GREAT AS ALWAYS! I would like to purchase all you cd's I can send cash through the post from uk by register! Any chance of you playing on midi and me have a copy? would love to have a "live performance" in my living room on my Disklavier piano! Take great care and look after you fingers!!
Not real sure about the midi thing-maybe a little more info. I own a Kohler SK5000H digital piano with floppy drive-compatible maybe. I have 2 cds available at the moment-both are Aus $25+$4.95 p+h ea or both for Aus $50 inc p+h. Check my "short thanks" clip for my email-cheers!!
Mike you can download to the floppy drive which will be general midi compatible. Not sure about the Kholer, but there will most likely be settings in the piano set-up to allow 'de-tune' of the piano sound which, when altered, will be identical to the de-tune of a real piano. Find yourself a recording studio - you will sure be able to sell your Cd's. Good Luck.
Absolutely wonderful - that's my Saturday night tied up watching this brilliant pianist. Thank you for the 2 Winnie clips also. Not seen any of her for yonks.
Its honky tonk. Some the strings are slightly detuned to give a phased effect. It evolved from american bars, that didnt tune their pianos to often. But the sound was liked and it evolved from there.
have owned this piano for bout 5 years & only had it tuned once (bout 5 years ago!)so its a real natural sound-glad you like!! going to start on a new cd playing this one soon
GODDAMN! 12th Street Rag. One of my favourites. Beautiful, Mikey. I admire anyone who can play good ragtime. If you're ever thinking of other oldies to play - Chinatown my Chinatown (1910), Give My Regards to Broadway (1900s, can't remember when), also 'Under the Bamboo Tree', another quirky one. Charleston, from 1923, would sound execellent on a piano like that. And of course...Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer, Pine Apple Rag, Elite Syncopations etc etc...anything ScottyJ wrote.
im personally an organist but im trying to teach myself to play honky tonk like that just trying to get ahold of an old piano is a problemb trying to get one in school but i dont think they would let me i got wrong for mooving an organ never mind a piano!!!
this is brilliant, you need to post more of this old pianna. you sound just like winnie when you play the black and white rag, something thats not easy. i enjoyed you version of roll out the barrel, its a shame it cuts off the rest of it.
