Strange comment. My fave two players ever are Jason and Satriani. Satriani loved ZZ top, Deep Purple, and Jimi Hendrix so he put his time and effort into sounding like that particular style. Jason loved virtuoso classical performers and was a big Yngwie fan, so he put his time and effort into playing that way. Neither spent countless hours learning the other persons style of playing, but that doesn't mean they couldn't. Satch cant sweep like Jason, but Jason is nowhere near as melodic as Satch.

Jason Becker knows a ton of theory, I saw a video of him explaining a song or something like that and he was talking about the phrygian arpeggios and how he sometimes likes to add in the ninth or the thirteenth of the chord and then change the mode to locrian or dorian after that... or something to that effect. Theory is very important to any musician who wants to be able to tell other musicians what they're playing.
