I've ran three marathons and am training for my fourth and there are plenty of people with more knowledge about running than me. However, his advice is ridiculous. Treadmills generally are lower impact than road running, not more, as he is saying. He's a dumb-ass.
@Ebuverthebicepcurler Is that because your upper body muscles aren't used in running? Don't answer that, you need upper body training, the stronger your overall body is, the better runner you will be, 90% of runners will tell you there shoulders, core, chest, back, has ached during or after running, the more conditioned these muscles are, the better they will work, and the less they will ache
Okay, but that wont go away by doing heavy bench presses. Actually, I doing even thing you can do anything about it but get used to it. Keeping the arms up as you run gives you sore shoulders, but that doesn't mean strong shoulders would in some way help you run. Strength has no benefit for high rep pain, like that of moving the arms back and forth as you run, and the force of your arms swinging doesn't affect your speed in any way at all.
"expert village" "expert fitness advice" hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha.. "here at expert village we track down experts to explain the things you wanna know" NEVER EVER get this retard on here again. "11 years of experience" That was the worst marathon advice I have ever seen. Ever.

I'm not sure in terms of damage. I run both on a normal surface and on a tredmill. I run on a tredmill for hill trainning and applying a 5 degree inclination. The difference is that in a tredmill is more mentally tough. I think that some tredmills might be more damaging to your shins though. i suffered shin splints on tredmills because it was a change of surface. I would try to do run on a tredmill for at least a mile to feel the difference.
I dont know its gunny that you ask though because mine are pumped up. By that I mean I have no more shin pain or other sorts of pain in because the more expereince you the more you get to know your body.
Don't listen to this chap. Swimming and upper body workuts for marathon running? Before your 3-4month schedule maybe but during? Just get a scheduled and run it.
how to run a marathon?
step 1: You start running.

I see nothing wrong with weight training. Unless you are trying to win, just have fun with the sport.

There is nothing more pointless to running than an upper-body workout.
