I am fully aware of chinese government problems but they are getting better and allowing liberties and freedom gradually. even Jiang Zemin thought communism was a mistake and china is gradually moving towards capitalisism/democracy with chinese characteristics.

fine, criticism is fine. i think it will change, some things, chinese government treatment towards minorities is even better. for example, han chinese are subject to 1 child policy. minorities muslims, xinjiang, tibetans, etc....are not subject to single child policy.

Old Tibet was a feudalist/theocratic state with a rigid caste system. Realize that the majority of the Dalai Lama's so-called people were basically slaves to the monks and the upper landowning classes. So, no, I fail to see how the message on the right is besides the point - China, while far from a perfect country, is actually working to improve the lives of Tibet's poorest people and to educate them.

The Dalai Lama is the RESPECTED Leader of Tibetan Buddhism which traditionally equals Tibetan Culture and Identity.
China occupies Tibet since half a century now and is overwhelming those "poor and uneducated" people with ideologically motivated political and economic pressure, pushing ever more Chinese into Tibet - making Tibetans a minority in their own country.

Yeah, I'm sick of seeing the Dalai Lama's nonsense all the time in the US media. Tibet would be in an abysmal state if not for China.

You need to realize that we're in the middle of a propaganda war between the TGIE/Washington & China. The ICJ reports were written during the Cold War and can be dismissed as wartime propaganda, but I'll explain anyway.
CPPCG defn. of genocide requires "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group"
Tibetan deaths were the result of either famine (due to drought & economic mismanagement) or soldiers killed in battle, so cross off ethnic and racial.

ICJ then tried to argue that the destruction of Tibetan monasteries constitute "acts of genocide", but the legal definition requires the INTENT to destroy. They were unable to prove this because: a) Much of the destruction was carried out by Tibetan Red Guards, b) most of the temples have been rebuilt, and c) the number of Buddhist temples destroyed in other parts of China far exceeded the number of Tibetan temples destroyed.

We are lucky that the Commies won the Chinese civil war in 1949. Up until the 1980s, the Kuomintang (current ruling Taiwan) supported a policy of forced assimilation of its ethnic minorities. The population of ethnic minorities in the PRC has grown to over 123 million. And with over 50 Tibetan studies institutes, Chinese scholars have been making enormous contributions in Tibetology.

If the Communists really were as "evil" as you seem to think, the Dalai/Panchen Lamas would have had their brains blown out during their 1954 visit to Beijing. Tibetans would've been rounded up and slaughtered, American/Australian style. Or they could have gone with forced assimilation, stealing children from their parents and sending them to boarding schools (Canada) or to live with Han families. Exterminating Tibet's tiny, defenseless population of 1.2m would've been child's play for them.

I would add, Tibetan population was 1.2 millions in 1950 (as stated). If China wanted to exterminate them, it does not need 50 years, within a year, they would be wiped off. That is a far estimate, assuming maximum resistance.

They spent an entire year in Tibet investigating. And remember, this was during the Cold War, and China was our enemy.
In 2007, there was a Global Conference on the Prevention of Genocide in Montreal, Canada. Tibet was noticeably absent on their list of genocides.

What you are referring to is probably the 1959 PRELIMINARY report. A year later, after conducting a long, thorough investigation, the ICJ was forced to conclude that there was no evidence to support exiles' allegations of genocide.

Be careful. If you speak English, you will lose your Tibetan language in future. May be you should STOP speak English immediately. Isn't it better for Tibetan children to speak Tibetan and Chinese so that they can advance their education beyond the University of Tibet and also find good jobs outside of Tibet. Why stay in a pond if you can swim in an ocean? Being bilingual gives them a better chance. Even westerners learn Chinese.
