  • In my opinion, this song is about people who had a story almost exactly like samson's from the Bible. However, they were not successful in the end and so they were not remembered in history.

  • hahahahahaha HE LOOKS SLEEEPY

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe so...

In the song, it says 'I cut his hair myself one night... and he said that i'd done alright'... how does that make sense? I doubt he would've been happy if she'd cut his hair... :)

  • @Turelx

i think it's because he was vulnerable, in love and absolutely happy with her

  • @Marixpress2

and from the point of view of his lover before Delilah. she loved him first, they were happy but no one told of their love. He gave up his strength and claim to fame to be with her. It sounds like he gladly gave it up. At least that's what it means to me :) Actually, it means something more personal to me but I'll leave that to myself hehe :) :)

  • I think it's supposed to be whatever the listener wants it to be :) Happy Sad Love Hate Whatever

  • Doesn't lovesongs and sad songs often be the same,SporkaProductions? ;)

  • i just cried a lot

  • ...This is a great song- however wtf is this douchebag doing?

  • douchebag

  • I don't think this song is supposed to be sad... It's supposed to be a love song.

  • yeah but i dont know...i get sad sometimes when i listen to this song

  • i think its supposed to be a sad love song

  • i dont think this is supposed to be funny but its rediculously hilarious

  • haha u kno i never really thought of it as funny until i saw ur comment

now i think its hilarious 2 lol

esp the part where hes like smoking

  • love this imma christian this speaks

  • flippyrocks and h2ochick are being pretty harsh, pretty mean actualy. There's no need to be so rude to the maker of this video. Constructive criticism is all fine and good, but those two are just being cold for no reason. That's just shameful.

  • This video is a disgrace to the song.

    e e

  • You are my sweetest downfall

I loved you first, I loved you first

Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth

I have to go, I have to go

Your hair was long when we first met

    P.S. I Care About You.

  • I think it's from delillahs point of view, but what she wanted instead of what actually happened. He loved Samson and wanted their life together to be normal and to not have changed history and have been written about. She wanted to cut his hair and him be happy with it. I think it's just about what she wanted.

  • well now im all sad, some one hug him please

  • The song also points out several contrasts to the bible story.

She even points out "The Bible didn't mention us".

So I think it's not about Delilah.

  • I think the only relation this song has to the biblical story is metaphorical.

Samson is a name that represents great strength, but when his hair was cut, he lost his strength.

So it's about a man who's very strong, but he could be vulnerable for the woman he loved - He let her cut his hair and take away his facade of constant strength.

  • i was just giving an over view of the samson, delilah part. i didn't want to go into too much detail.

  • u blink a lot nigga

  • (continued from other comment) The Bible never really mentioned the love they shared, just the lust Samson felt. In this song, Delilah really does love Samson and is ashamed of what she did to her greatest love ("You are my sweetest downfall"). She experienced love she never knew, but ruined it for money. Spektor does a god job of turning this story of deceit and bribery into an amazing love song.

  • To everyone trying to figure out the meaning of this song, I see it as the story of Samson and Delilah told by Delilah. In the Bible, the Philistines (the people Samson fought and defeated day after day by himself) bribed her to find out the secret to his strength. When she found out it was his hair, they paid her more to cut it off which killed him the next day when he tried to tear some columns down and was crushed. (continued in another comment)

  • I think you need to reread the book of Judges. The story is not quite as you describe.

  • I love this video clip, it contains so much emotion.

    drop dead gorgeous

  • Hmm...

Someone told me on another video that this song was about a boy named Samson, and she loved him first, but he got cancer, and that's why she had to cut his hair, and why she keeps repeating, "not much hair left on his head". And he was her sweetest, downfall...

That's how I had always thought of it, lol.

But I am confused by everything you guys are saying!

Anyways..I love Regina, she has an amazing voice, and is beautiful!

  • that's an interesting way to look at it, very sad tho.

I always thought it was just a song about Regina's first love and how they both cared about each other deeply, but things just didn't work out, they "couldn't bring the columns down". Just recently I found out about its' biblical references. I see a lot of people looking at it as a story taken right from the bible, but I really think it's personal song about a love she had, only using the biblical references as symbols. such a wonderful song

  • The story Samson in the Bible only portrays Delilah as a traitor, not as a woman who loved Samson. The Bible didn't mention how she felt about Samson as a person and a boyfriend.

  • I think the song is about the "other truth"' becouse in every human story there is allwais two versions of truth' the truth looks like different from different points of view.

  • I way prefer this version than the one on begin to hope. its like rawer or something. and slower. its so nice

  • U_U '

  • i love this song x

  • what is this song about? And why is there a funny looking guy in the video? xD

  • The song is about Delilah and Samson, characters from the Bible. However, the real story is too long to tell on a youtube comment. So you'll have to do the research youself.

  • its about this samson guy in the bible who had these powers that were kept in his hair and when you cut his hair he lost his powers and then his girlfriend cut his hair for money or whatever one night and he was captured and he couldnt knock down this tower thing and the guard people laughed and yeah.. shes like, pretending that she was his girlfriend first before the delilah one. and hes not funny lookin! your mean!

  • This song is about the fact that everythign is not black and white... there are 2 sides to every story. This is the human side of a moral story from the bible, I find much more meaning in this than some old story proving how vengeful and petty god was in the old testament.

  • oh i know i was just telling the story that its based on.. im sure theres alot more behind it since like, its not complerely the story that shes telling but shes being the girlfriend before delilah

  • Nah, it's suppoed to be Delilah... She cut his hair. He only got 1 hair cut so the story tells =P

  • no im pretty sure its about a girlfriend before delilah like 'i loved you first' and 'the history books forgot about us' and she didnt get mentioned in the bible like delilah did. i love reginas songs and how theyre written from weird points of views, she does some male songs aswell. Im going to see her in a month wahey! :)

  • Well, your hypothesis would make sense except for the fact that Sampson never received a haircut prior to Delilah. Thus him retaining his strength.

  • oh i know thats why i think the song goes beyond the story, rather than just sticking to the bible thing! like, a metaphor yano? this song being about some guy she loved who left for someone who treated him like crap(possibly) youd prob have to ask her what its actually about to completely understand. all i know for sure is i love this song! aha..

  • I agree with yesitslikethat. I think it's about a girlfriend Sampson might have had in the past, before he ever met Delilah. She did the same thing Delilah did (cut his hair), and she really did love him, but the Bible only discusses Delilah because she was the cause of his downfall. It's sort of about how we only ever remember certain stories and certain people, and there are always others, perhaps equally important, who are always forgotten.

But I could be completely wrong. :D

  • Samson gave into his weaknesses in a number of instances with the Philistine women, but none of them loved him. Ultimately Samson repented and killed more Philistines in his death than in his life.

  • Ive got a different version on my ipod... :S

  • the world will be alright ....if we learn how to distill seawater...

..we can help the other 3rd world country's if we teach them how to distill water..

..distilling is the process of boiling the water and condenceing the steam again..

..this can also take the salt out of seawater...

    ..and purifie river water......

...and can be made for 30 dollars or so

..so look up water distillation on wikipedia..or some where..

  • lol random point

but ye is tru i guess

  • why would we do that? we're not running out of water are we? i thought we had too much

  • Amazing song, so beautiful, always remember her whenever I hear it...<3.

  • Oh come on! Give her last album a listen, she's in a different league to the terrible Ms Amos as well as coming across as a much nicer and more down to earth person.

  • this is really great :'D i remember someone whenever this song plays.

  • hello.. could you tell me if this is the real music video.. coz i am looking for it..

  • there is no real music video for this song.

  • There's a real music video for this. The copyright usage of it on Youtube came to an end and sadly you can't find it on here anymore. If you go to Google however you'll be able to find it. It's the one that looks like a pop up book to begin with.

  • oh.. thank you :)

  • go lick a rock. this song is heartbreakingly beautiful. broaden your musical horizons.

  • You suck really bad!

  • simply amazing.

  • Por primera vez una cancion me suena a dulce sin ser una nyonyeria..

  • Love the song and the whole album. Regina is inspiring in ways which seem to be so absent from a lot of the so-called (anglo-saxon) popular music. I also dug the parallel with Laura Nyro by jvcotr. Women of wisdom and true artists indeed.

  • to me.. regina reminds me fiona apple. in every single way.

  • c'est excellent. je ne pourrais trouver rien meilleur que ce des thenks pour le téléchargement. je normalement n'aime pas ce genre de musique, mais c'est excellente, de nouveau.

  • Regina reminds me of Laura Nyro - If you do not know Laura, you need to check her out. She was truly one of the originals that introduced this genre of female/singer/songwriter.

  • Love the song and the whole album. Regina is inspiring in ways which seem to be so absent from a lot of the so-called (anglo-saxon) popular music. I also dug the parallel with Laura Nyro by jvcotr. Women of wisdom and true artists indeed.

  • this song makes me wanna cry

  • this song is so beautiful
