I play by ear, so I understood very little of this video (musical notewise). Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I think I will have to watch several more times for enough information to sink into my rather thick skull. However, I have learned stuff already (from the first viewing). And I like the interruption from the dog. That was cute. Funny, how I can manage to play straight melodies (by ear), but I can not harmonize (back up other instruments) to save my life.
No, there are lots of ways to learn to play harmonica--the best way is to spend time doing it!
I know theory (sort of) so I approach the harmonica from a certain mental space, but there are lots of other harmonica players, all of whom have their own take on things.
But the bottom line is, the blow is a chord and the draw is a complementary chord--
So you go in and out and up and down--that will create a melodic pattern.
And if you have a chromatic, you can play the notes in between.
my chromatic (well thats what it says on the box =P) has 24 holes and a button on the side... is it the smae principle or should i find another person to help...
I have a bit of a problem...I just recieved a 12 hole harmonica (hohner), but it doesn't have a button. The book that I received with the harmonica is for a harmonica with a button. I haven't found any other harmonicas like mine without a button, but still a 12 hole. Can you tell me what kind I have and what I should do?

How in the world do you tune a harmonica?

So is it pretty much impossible to play the harmonica without an understanding music theory? Sort of by ear or something?

He's 10 lbs. of trouble!
I actually took a chromatic to the animal shelter when I went down to acquire him, and played a bit, to make sure he wouldn't try to "sing along".
I never owned a dog before and I am proud to say he is "the best dog in the world".
