Please listen to Szekely--the violinist for whom Bartok wrote this concerto--play the premiere performance. It's here on YouTube and, for me, is the best interpretation from start to finish.
Quite different from this or any other performance I've heard.
Just 30 seconds and the passion hooks you and doesn't let go. Great music for action or abstract expressionist painting; making is best but for looking too.
I know little about classical and nothing of what inspired Bartok but the discordant, foreboding and sweet combined are compelling and deeply moving.
Thanks for posting so I could find it. I heard the Menhuin version often growing up and have searched all over , but this is as good as my memory. That so rarely happens, lol
Heard this by The Halle at Bridgewater hall this evening. Absolutely amazing. Mark Elder and Nikolaj Znaider <3

a great piece of music. I am listening to Yehudi Menhuin playing it in 1946 with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Just great!

It's criminal that EMI has not issued this on CD. But then EMI is incompetent in almost every way.

Even if it did, few contemporary cd shops would stock it. Thats whats criminal

In the U.S. there are no more CD shops. I have to buy everything on the internet.

Places like Barnes and Noble have pretty good classical selection. And there are a few CD shops that survive here in the Twin Cities...
