I saw what is left of Mayhem this week at Irving Plaza in NYC, and while they can never replace Euronmyous, they did conjure up some freakin evil music and played one hell of a show.
Since everyone mentions the fact that it was due to Euronymous's influences that bands like Emperor, Darkthrone and Immortal started playing black metal, I want to mention that Mayhem did not play in the style of DMDS before Dead came along. Dead influenced Euronymous and Mayhem to become what they were. Listen to Morbid's December Moon, by his old band. It's much closer to DMDS than Deathcrush. Dead brought the concepts covered in DMDS into Mayhem. And they haven't sounded like that ever since.
True black metal bands like burzum and mayhem, have nothing to do with satanism. In an old radio interview, euronymous said that they call themselves satanists because it freaks people out, not because they worship satan. The basic idea in black metal is the hate against christianity because it deposed the ancient religions in norway and other northern countries.
Most Mayhem fans are idiotic kids who have no idea of this band. They follow each other like some fucking sheeps screaming "The TRUE Mayhem was Dead and Euro" and all this shit for the last 15 years. Hmmm, its difficult to say. Mayhem always had phenomenal vocalists/frontmen. They're all very distinctive and great in their own way. Maniac was great. Great vocals, amazing lyrics and some sick performances. Dead was also really phenomenal, had an amazingly disgusting vocal and wrote some incredible lyrics. Attila is incredibly flexible (listen to ordo ad chao for proof). He could make any vocal he wanted to. high pitched to low and/or semi-operatic. Probably the BEST metal vocalist nowadays.

yea, tyrant is right, euronymous was the drivetrain of mayhem. he's the one that made it so evil and satanic and shit. if u look at later albums, its not as evil. originally, euronymous wrote deathcrush, he just had mainiac sing it. and then dead wrote DMDS, which was again, a very evil, brutal album, but after that it started to die down. but i do hav to say ordo ad chao is pretty necro. starts getting back into that evil shit. not quite as evil, but i think its pretty damn good.

u know its kinda funny in 195 when i was just at the age of 10 i thought dead`s voice was in the deathcrush album ,but u know y, this album is fuckign amazing, messiah and manic made a good job , and it rally sound fucking brutal , thats why most of us thoght was dead , but we sitll have the pleasure to listen to the freezing moon album with deas voice , this album its the best fuck i fucking love it

not true at all, mayhem didn't start black metal, and his ideas weren't what made black metal in the first place, I don't think he had any right to decide what made black metal black metal, Burzum was and still is amazing, but burzum has nothing to do with satan.. it has everything to do with Norways true roots.. Dead was awesome, but he wasnt all that great, people need to get over their fanboy retardation.
Maniac was better, and I stand by that.
DEATHCRUSH was orgasmic with Maniac, and Messiah at the Mic.
Dont get me wrong Dead is EVIL as hell, and one of my heroes, but he wasnt THE VOICE in Black Metal, I think many after him were better.
