Yes, thats true, when life was something, and farmers were proud of thier trade. When I was in high school in Erie County, Pa., there were 1,079 dairy farms-today there are 17.
I remember up until Interstate 80 went through our farms in 1960, there was an old bachelor farmer with 80 acres who farmed until then with a McCormick Deering 10-20 tractor with rubber tires and an F-12 with steel wheels and a 2 row cultivator. After he was forced off the farm by the highway construction, he lived in a little apartment over a gas station. It was sad to watch him lose interest in life. The only permanent thing is change except for timeless wisdom. That's my anchor.
Thnx Tom! What a wonderful collection you have-You guys are fortunate to have these treasures. Up here in Canada there is almost zip zero films, photos or otherwise left. Those few that had cameras had stuff confiscated or lost along the way. The dirty thirties was brutal up here too-especially in the Palliser Triangle. I think we are about to experience this horror all over again.
1929 McCormick-Deering pulling a 4-bottom McCormick-Deering "Little Genius" plow-wow! A 50hp Case steam engine and Model TT 1 ton truck would really round out the package-a treasured video indeed! Thnx a bunch.
That tractor is a 1929 McCormick-Deering and it is coupled to a 3-bottom McCormick-Deering " Little Genius" plow. I suspect it`s probably a factory demo film. The tractor color was a dark blue grey/red wheels. The plow was red/white/blue-with coulters/plowshares in blue. Just a little info for you purists of old farm machinery!
This is from a 16MM home movie. I collect old 16MM films, including home movies. The silent film stock and style are consistent of home movie camerawork in films of that era. The only non-home movies I have posted to youtube are scoptione music videos from the 1960s.
mon arriere grand pere avais 15 ans en 1930 ... j'ais meime une photo de lui ... dans un champ de blé avec un tracteur en arriere .... woww ca veu dire que ste photo la a 80 ans ....
That is so cool! i got pictures of my family like this. we quit farming in the 60s but im the out cast in my family who is gonna try like hell to bring it back!
Thank you for sharing. Watching this video brings back memories of my Grandfather, and lets me see some of what farming was like for him. Have a blessed day:)
That may be true for city folk, but here in the countryside, through the summer we rarely work less than 18/19 hours a day, every day if the weather is good. Nice video by the way

yes down under in Erina NSW my grampa had a tractor similar to this in the 50s.
The smell of the dirt turning over and the kookaburras hunting for worms is still in my mind.
Thanks fella

The 1930's were hard times.
If you had a farm, you could at least eat.
If you made money with your farm, then you were lucky.
Many people lost their farms.
Thank you for posting this piece of history.
