  • 7:05 wat.

  • they don't have girlfriends....

  • Long live the quake army

  • 3Dfx :)

  • this is awesome. pc gaming needs to go back to its roots

  • @lars337 What the fuck are you talking about go back to its roots? Whats wrong with pc gaming as it is now? You gets tons of mods and dedicated servers, and graphics customization out the wazoo. Updates and patches via the internet. And tons of other shit. I think you just said that just cause you thought people were gonna thumbs it up, and tell you how much they agree with you.....

  • @halo6534 you really have no idea what i was talking about but that's okay

  • YES GROVIEST WEPS FTW

  • Carmack on the thumbnail looks a lot like Kaka. He's way smarter than that douche bag though,

  • best game ever

  • I remember when I was a baby, my dad would put me on his lap while having a lan party with his friends

  • @seelangay Gee, thanks for making me feel old... I'm only 28, FFS! :'(

  • @Jehjoa 28 Is still considered to be young. that is till you hit 30 LOL

  • Grooviest weapons :)

  • his eyes were purple from coding at that time :DDDD

  • original q1 rocket launcher == glans head

  • Carmack when he was still a hardcore nerd. Console fan now.

  • @TadRaunch Same thing happened to Todd Howard.

  • @TadRaunch Gabe's next.

  • @ryder187mac Yes dota 2 is just going to be a massive console port

  • Would be epic if romero was present in this video but IMO carmack deserves all the glory.

  • candles, skulls and quake thats the setup!

  • John Carmac looks a lot like hutch

  • 0:49, 1:44.. OG noobs.. but naw i used a joystick in quake too lol. and keyboard only for doom

  • you can play it over the internet, for free !... take that xbox live !!

  • john carmack is actually a program which programmed itself. It is selfcontained intelligence

  • If carmack would be tied to a chair like stephen hawking, he wouldnt even care as long he can still program

  • Wow i miss the 90's

  • 02:22 "the Net"... man, those were the days, huh?

  • Pfsh, probably quite a few Quake widowers as well! :] This video was pretty perfect, for all the reasons everyone else has already mentioned. I love how earnest everyone is!

  • It's ironic that quake 1-3 gained initial popularity due to their superior graphics and now quake fans like to say that graphics isn't important.

  • @idontknowwhatnicktou Quake gained popularity because it kicked ass. Even then, only a moron would call its graphics crap. I actually find Q3 more realistic than a shitload of present-day shooters thanks to its mastery of textures. Back then, you didn't slap normal maps on everything and call it a day.

  • @idontknowwhatnicktou When you say initial popularity, you mean the enduring popularity that's lasted 15 years?

  • that guy pretty much called E-sports

Quake is an E-sport, of course no where near SC2 or DOTA level these days, its died down alot, mainly because Quake 4 was a shitty console shooter (fuck you Id)

  • @Ultizer

fucking retard. ID didnt directly over see Quake 4's production. in fact, they didnt even develop it. raven software did. so before you open your mouth and talk shit about ID, think.

  • I can only imagine the look on people's face's if I were to show these guys back then footage of Battlefield 3 on a top-of-the-line computer...o.o

  • You were so awesome Carmack. What the hell happened to you?

  • 7:57 John Carmack nerd groan

  • 1:00, back in the days when girl gamers were perhaps more socially acceptable. With my childhood being in the 90s, I actuall thought it was awesome knowing a girl in school that played Turok!

  • this did things better than the vast majority of games today. im eving going so far to say its a better platform for competition than ANY game out there except older quakes (2 and 3) and counterstrike, plus the first UT. but even in terms of customization and freedom for the admins it beat counterstrike by a long shot. ahead of its time. just goes to show, you dont need fancy graphics and a lot of high end crap, you need an idea and a sense for gameplay and what you really look for in a game.

  • 1:44

Keyboard only guy.. I dont want him in my clan

  • I'd forgotten how much like the Flintstones old school computer gaming was.

  • 1.44 MB Era ! !

  • damn, nobody even knew the world half-life back in 96!

  • That dude is a 3d game buff... man we have come such a long way. i remember playing quake when it came out and being scarred shitless but i knew it was something special

  • Is that mitzi?!

  • epic joystick @ 1:00!!!!

  • 8:20 John Carmac in boss mode.

Giving awesome information while petting the cat like a evil genius. :D

  • Omg Carmac monster!

  • Revolutionary! There are no men like him nowadays. Everybody just uses basically what he has created to make more money on stupid projects.

No progress since first Quake's. Bringing the action to 3d space was a revolution that changed everything. After that nothing significant changed. And it's been what, 15 years now? I wonder who will take the __gameplay__ on the next level and when it will be...

  • @pomahpress I will take gameplay to the next level, both 2D and 3D, by the mid and the end of this decade.

  • 2 People Disliked it because they think it's nothing like Call of Duty :P

  • what the hell has changed in 15 years?

  • wow its a shame duty heads playin something that was done back in 96. man Rage is gonna be his next big muve. GOT GET IT

  • hot girl :O

  • "quake widows" hahahah awesome....good times.

  • >Guy playing with a fucking joystick

    >FEMALE playing fucking Quake 1

    Take me back to '96.

  • @Spartan117A1

lmao I have the same Joystick. The thing is a freaking tank.

  • @Spartan117A1 Hell muthafuckin ye! the days where joysticks was coOol..

  • @Spartan117A1 yaaaaaaaaaaa :) xD xD

  • @Spartan117A1 I like the way you call them 'females' like they're some sort of divine mythical creatures.

  • @TheOtherLioyd They pretty much are. I'll never touch either.

  • Fucking win.

  • I liked how things were back then because everybody appreciated what games brought to the table, now people are so picky and complain about small shit

  • Quake Widows.

You only hear that about this game.

  • These people, this company actually changed the world with it's few games.

    Thanks !

  • Quake was the begining. Amazing game. But alot of things doesn't make sense, there's alot of black guys a the press conference, there's a cat on the table, people talk about how realistic quake is. funny stuff xD.

  • Thanks Carmack. You didn't need to continue working on QW but you did for no other reason than to enhance the player experience. I bow.

  • I like when he stops anwsering he makes HMMMMM HMMMM :D

  • Look at all those CRTs....

  • 00:50 seconds in, what the hell, haha

  • The guy with the beard, 2:35 is Tom "Gollum" Dawson, won the first CPL event in 1997

  • Comment removed

  • Great. Thanks for this

  • lol at girl playing it wrong......

  • There's something special about the average hardcore fan in 1996 being in their 20s and 30s. The dialog is more mature. Today, the "perfect" fan to many companies is someone who's 16 and doesn't ask too many questions. It's sad.

  • @Renegen1 I know too many teens who know fuck all about great games. We hardcore fans back then had some class haha

  • 01:00 old school girl-gamer not using WASD

  • This....is.....AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Screw CryTek with their shitty games! ID SOFTWARE FOREVER!!!

  • @pablopeach

    A server isn't a server if it doesn't run 24/24.

  • @Dreadlockyx It still is a server, albeit a very bad one :-)

  • @EXetoC

    Yeah :p

  • I hate console noobs!

    What a geek heaven. YEY.

  • they looks so retro - like b&w tv

  • your welcome CoD fanboyz

  • That's a lot of CRT's at than LAN party.

  • 2 watchers are quake widows

  • 2:40 is that Tom "Gollum" Dawson?

I don't recognize the others. Who is the guy at 3:35?

  • @PerpetualParakeet The guy who lost the tournament to win Carmack's Ferrari?

    /watch?v=nnpaS31ShYk

I found a clip of the game between Gollum and Thresh

  • @TylerSurvivors No 3:35 is definitely not Entropy9. I am 80 % certain that is Tom Dawson at 2:40

  • look at that nice meat playing the game 1:04

  • Carmack has to be the smartest non-Jewish person in the world! I wonder what his IQ is.

  • @Jinmane wtf

  • @highvoltage138 I suspect he has Asperger's syndrome, combined with the fact that he is a master programmer. I should really read Masters of Doom someday.

  • Listen closely at 07:05. "Nobody has really done it on this scale beforeMMMMM!"

  • QUAKE RULES

  • Wow..Does carmack not age....he looks the same now as he did then

  • Wow if you thought Q1 was fun I remember playing Q2 for my entire looser teenage life. WOW.. that game was insanely fun and had massive replay value online.

Remember all the Low ping and high ping bastards, then they came out with affordable ISDN lines and I was about to leak on my self at the sheer speed when gaming.

  • 1:01 - she seems nice

  • @tonyperkis8584 ye shes totally fuckable

  • I can really remember how big things was back then ^^ Now is everything Overrated instead XD

  • lol @ 00:50 playing with Wingman Warrior joystick... i use to play Quake2 with that

  • 8:14 - giving an interview while stroking your pussy. now that's class.

  • @Gluecks lmao

  • I think I just died of nostalgia.. Oh the joy. havent played nearly enough the last 3-4 years though :/

  • Carmack allowed and encouraged the id games to be modified by the players. He made them easy to mod as well. Respect mate!

  • CARNAGE IS GOOD!

  • I love how open he is about the development issues, dont see alot of that these days :)

  • @Q3t3sh

Yeah i agree, i guess now days its more about the money.

  • @Q3t3sh Yeah, A shame isn't it. Also the fact that more and more games are being developed with consoles in mind...

  • Quake is gg

  • Notice how Carmack makes a funny little noise after every sentence or thought? It changes too... so funny once you start realizing it's him.. hahaha I imagine at this point he had been for years locked in the dungeon churning out code so quickly and precisely only a pact with the devil itself could have brought everything together so well into a game that forever changed what was possible in design and replayability. <3 id (except royally fu(k!ng up Quakelive & charging subscriptions) ^_~

  • john carmack in this video is a geek XD

  • Man Carmack was such a legend back then, you can just see the wheels spinning as he's talking and going though 50 different formulas and calculating every possible answer based on the performance of each piece of hardware. Loved quakeworld, spent soooo much time playing that, and then even more time playing ctf on quake 2, miss those days!

  • listen console kiddies listen..

  • Best game EVER

  • I played Modern Warfare once. I played Bioshock once. I played Dead Space once. I played Gears of War once. I played Crysis once. I stopped halfway through Halo.

I have played Quake more times than I can remember. Happy birthday and thank you for giving me hours of entertainment.

  • @digitalintent halo sucked so hard halfway through, with the same room being cut and pasted in near-infinite times in a row, just thinking of it gets me close to tears.

  • @digitalintent Am I a bad person for liking Crysis as much as Quake?

  • @PINGASFIST No you aren't. I've been playing Quake since Quake II and there is some FPS that I like more than Quake.

  • @sabers2th There are*

  • @PINGASFIST No. You like Quake. You either grew up seeing the progression of the FPS/modern gaming, or you like many games and appreciate good game mechanics. If you said the graphics are shit or believe Halo invented the FPS, I would pity you.

Crysis had solid gameplay, but wasn't a favorite of mine. Preferred Far Cry. I loved GoW and Dead Space tho. Currently replaying GoW 1 & 2 before I start 3.

As an artist, Doom/Quake opened my eyes to a world of digital art/3D. They are special to me.

  • "People are jumping in and out of the game and its all for free..." Imagine Id was greedy like Blizzard and how much money they would rip from our pockets for subscriptions... Carmack you are my hero! :)

  • "The graphics are incredible" LOL

  • @k3kc3000 You caught that this was in 1996, right?

  • @Saerain You caught that its 2011, right?

  • @ 1:00 OMFG A GIRL

  • Haha, this is refreshing to see. Outdated yes (guy talking about how Quake is incredible and there's no other game like it, but completely true at the time), but seeing it makes you realize just how progressive Quake was. I am about to play it after this video ends. Happy b-day to id's magnum opus. :)

  • quake is carnage. carnage is good.

  • The only hot girl that plays quake @ 1:03

  • Yes i remember Good old quake it was really something new and inovative it that thime , Happy Birthday and keep going forward because people like you and games like this remains in history forrever , in our minds, in our Hearts . Happy Birthday QUAKE !!!!

  • Graphics are incredible!!! hahahahahaaha I think that guys that was talking then is just laughing to himself. xDD

  • 1 man prefer to play halo

    QuakeWorld still rollin'!

this game stood the test of time, which does not pass any modern FPS. Quake = best shooter I've ever played

  • lol @PCivati - you don't know shit about breaking new ground. It is what sticks with people. Doom, Quake... it will be written in all gaming books for eternity. COD, no matter how good it is, will be a minor footnote in that book.

Happy B-Day Quake, I pray for a new ground breaker, I haven't given up yet...

  • @Botlorn But the graphics are like sooo bad in this game. I bet you can't even change your loadout or place claymores. Its not even realistic. Oh, and nobody uses IRC anymore. These dudes are noobs

  • Happy Birthday Quake! 15th anniversary!

  • I always wondered what a gamer from 1996 or so would say if he saw a game like battlefield 3 ;D

maybe they'd think it was a film

    whatever... HAPPY BIRTHDAY QUAKE

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :D

  • "Quake - it's just like in real life". Yay for technology. ;-)

But it's still kicking ass in terms of gameplay and that's what really counts.

    Happy birthday Quake!

Still using good old IBM Model M BTW :-)

  • Happy birthday Quake :) So so many years have past!

  • Ahh the good ol'days... I even see the CRT Monitors! whole bunch of them in fact! Damn i miss those times.

  • happy b-day quake, would love to see my how much time i spend on qw and tf:qw

  • Haha, that guy with his joystick chuckled. Was he any good? ;)

Who was that blonde gal? Was that KillCreek?

  • Long live the Quake!

MMX, 3Dfx, Pentium, 486... Nerd nostalgia. And I wan't know about more about the cat. :P

  • happy birth day, quake - one of the biggest games ever

  • Quake. So many memories! Happy b-day, my Number One game of all times!

  • Carmack: "Hi, im defining what FPS will be for the next 20 to 30 years in my spare time, hope you like it"

  • @DaChubu Damn right.

  • I remember that.

    This is real 3d?

Ohhh look at this monster it is in 3d!
