Mario follows a completely different type of platforming genre and therefore these two cannot be compared properly.

It's like comparing Team Fortress 2 and Super Meat Boy. They just can't be compared because they follow different genres.

I grew up with this game. Still have the Genesis hooked up in my mom's living room. The way my child brain processed certain things about this game are so strange to think back on. First, I always thought that the levels were real places. I always wanted to live in the Green Hill Zone. Also, my mom and aunt apparently bought the Genesis for my grandfather, and it came with Sonic.

I thought the little greenish blocks that you have to break through on this level were HIS blocks, and I was always scared I would get in trouble for breaking them. Gotta love a child's imagination.

I kinda didn't want to to play Mario games so much because at first I couldn't admit they were good (was a real fanboy kid), but very soon I realized how silly I was. There's no question why these 2 are the kings of platforming.

@wizzlekidd This is the original speed, actually. It was originally made in japan on an NTSC system and was released in the US in the same speed as in japan, but in europe, due to the use of the PAL system, it slowed the music down.

@CosmoBuggi Yes but the decision was still up to the developers (Sonic Team) to decide whether they wanted to optimize the soundtrack or leave it at the defaulted 50Hz speed for PAL.

It could've infact been their intention to have it played slower for the PAL regions. Games don't have to play identical all over the world and It's not necessarily a mistake running slower.

Don't mean to sound biased towards the PAL version, i'm just saying that the PAL slowdown may or may not be a mistake.

@DarkMage530 somehow I didn'T like Sonic 3, and the sales give me right (sorry 4 engl I'm no native speaker ^^) Sonic 3 wasn't that successful in terms of selling numbers than 1 and 2, I think 2 was the economically most successful. Sonic 4 Ep 1 was a huge letdown. Have to try Sonic & Knuckles though! :)

@shairaptor Your judgement of whether a game is good or not is based solely on the sales? That's no way to judge a game. Sonic 3 is my favorite and in my opinion the best of the Sonic franchise. When it's connected to Sonic & Knuckles it becomes in my opinion one of the top 10 games of all time. I honestly wasn't a big fan of Sonic 1 as well. Sonic 2 was great but the save feature from 3 would of been fantastic. I one time got to the very end with 60+ lives and then the power went out.
