  • I am having this exact procedure in a few weeks. My father had the same procedure for two disc herniations. He felt great immediately. Leg pain, numbness and foot drop went away almost immediately as well. Takes about 2 to 4 weeks to be able to go back to work. But no bed rest required, in fact they want you to keep moving. Just no lifting anything heavier than a phone or 10 lbs.

Some reports of the surgery not working can depend on the severity of the herniations on the nerves and the time th

  • I had L5/S1 Endoscopic Discectomy 12 days ago. The numbness in my thigh, foot, and toes was gone immediately after the surgery. But I am still having sciatic pain (manageable) when I walk. I still limp a bit as such. I will have my 1st follow appt with my surgeon next week.

  • I had my micro-discectomey over a year now and it has caused more pain and numbness... Sucks. why don't Dr's. here do Disc implants like the u.s.a??? I've heard nothing but good things, also all I hear regarding Micro-discectomies is they are no good, stay away..... as the cutting of the back muscle eventually makes things worse and destabilization of your core is eventual...Leave it to the Canadian health system to take the cheapest way out, causing more pain and suffering in the end.

    Peace

  • i had this done 2 months ago- when do i feel better?

  • Thank you for this presentation. It was most helpful in illustrating for my children what I will be going through very shortly.

  • is Discectomy anything to do with your balls? :s

  • @moe80ca in regard to your pain, I too, was suicidal with pain that can only be described as that... six weeks in a ball with no real treatment... if you can get a magnacet or two you will be able to sleep for a few hours... a few hours of painless bliss... don't let go... your pain is a focus point and a test of your spirit... although damaged, mine still flies!!! still can't feel my toes on my right foot

  • @dirtyatc & @moe80ca... I felt sucidal too. I still say if that pain came back to get me a bus schedule so I know where to be standing & at what time. 6 years of that pain was far too long. Especially since no doctor ever said, lets get an MRI & when I wanted once cuz I couldn't move I was asked.. Why? What do u want surgery or something?... Geez. Hope you found out some information on what can be done for you!!

  • @moe80ca ....never think about suicide....be strong buddy. Im going through the same thing. Mine was a result of sports injury. I cant sit, sleep, walk, bath, wear shoes, shit, stand...with out this friggin pain. Its a constant every day, every minute, of my life. I get spells where it calms down, but then i am reminded that pain is what my life has come to be all about. It has affected my personality in ways i cant even discribe. I have become a little more with drawn socially.

  • @darpachief thanks bro for your sweet words .....you have just described my pain exactly when u talked about yrs but add to it my pain effected my life and living i have a wife and daughter to support i have never worked since i injured myself and I'v lost interest in everything ,infact my life has become very difficult financialy ,physically , emotionally and socially because of it i tried anything everything but nothing worked ,i reached apoint of feeling as if im living in my own sad prison

  • 7-20-10 today ... Walked in at 6:30am, walked out at 10:30am. L5-S1. yes my back hurts some, but guess what, my legs, feet, and toes feel fine which was not so yesterday. Had to come here and see what they did... how cool was that?

  • I'll be having a discectomy in around 6 weeks time.

Have had lower back pain for over 20 years, which then I got the electric shock / stabbing pain in back and down leg for several years, however the last 9 months have had constant pain down left leg and toes and pins and needles, so decided to go to doctor again about this (previously been some years back and earlier and had 2 x-rays) and had MRI done and decided on this procedure.

  • Hi friends,

I had a discectomy two months back and i am doing qt well now. Almost no pain. I myslef am a physician and though my personal experience may help others. You may find may negative comments, reports of complications etc in forums. REMEMBER that is becuase only those who had some problems will only be coming back to these forums to detail it. The thousands who has a successful surgery moves on..so dont get disheartened. Ask your doc if u need any more details

    bye

    gud luck

  • @lovarts thanks, I have a herniated disk in the L4-L5 region, I'm planning on having this done possibly next month. Can you tell me how your recovery is going now? This problem is almost going on 3+ years, I've managed to stay alive with chiropractic care, but I'm running out of strength and energy to go on. I workout about 3 hours daily to withstand the pain. I have weakness in my left leg and toe, but somehow I can still walk and do stuff. Any recommendations.

  • @theerealrocknrolla

Hi there, I am doing good as of now. I do have occassional back sprains, but nothing that is very much limiting. I havent lifted any heavy weight or like that post surgery though. Also not much physical activity. I think i wll start some aerobics from this month.

  • Thank you for your info, I really appreciate it. For the back sprains, you should try getting into kettlebells. My chiropractor designed a routine for me. They really target the muscles, and have proven to restore motor function. I'm probably preaching to the choir though, cause you probably already knew that. I see the physician in 3 weeks for the evaluation. By the way, the evaluation is with LSI, they do the discectomy, but with a laser? What do you think?

  • You seem to have a chronic L4 L5 disc prolapse. Any idea how much it is prolapsed? Is there a total extrusion ? If you weakness in toe and leg, it means your nerves are getting compressed for sure. In that case i strongly recommend you for surgery.

If you have your MRI picture, upload it, i may be able to comment more.

    tc

    wishing you good recovery

  • @lovarts I don't have the MRIs or the reports on me right now, but it is compressing the nerve. I had spinal traction done which did shrink the size, which was confirmed with a second MRI. However, I'm still having leg weakness and lower back pain. Most pain is located in my lower back, that remains constant and my whole back flairs up. I also am now having trouble sitting. So, yeah, I guess I'm gonna have to have surgery. Thanks for your response, I feel a little more comfortable now.

  • @lovarts What's up Doc? "bad joke" its been about 8 months since your procedure, how are you today... I'm in my forth week post microdiscectomy L5-S1, and its seems to be very slow, in your opinion if you could, is this long recovery normal

  • @dirtyatc If u r in you were 4th wk.. you'd still B healing & u should just about B ready 4 physical therapy. My doctor had me wait 6 weeks 2 come back after my surgery. I rec'd the same story about losing weight & working out. But I decided 2 hold my anger since I used to be in constant pain & was depressed. So I couldn't wkout & I ate cuz of depression. I hope @ 8 wks u r feeling better!! I have therapy exercises if u need them.

  • @Sammy9397 Thanks for the advice. I go back the "doc" on monday, now they want to take post-op mri. Its quite obvious to me now that noone can relate to me unless they have had some sort of physical agony. Ive all but given up on returning to my life as i knew it, for my body and mind are strangers to me... I'm withdrawn to the point of seriously making plans to borrow into the side of a hill and giving the crusty old hermit lifestyle a go. Good luck to you all , I have felt your pain.

  • i agree... WOW!!!

i have herniated disc and mostly likely i will need this kind of surgery.... this looks kinda cool...

  • WOW
