If Keith Hackney had just a little bit of understanding what BJJ was, he would have beaten Royce. I'm not talking about him studying it. I'm talking about him knowing the basics on what not to do.
Hackney was a bad man. I had been studying Kenpo for about 6 months when the UFC started... needless to say, he was my hero !
He was smashing Royce Gracie in the Finals... and what a beautiful sprawl he had. He figured out how to stop a shoot before the rest of the sport. I just wish he had won... even still, what a great "spokesman" he was for Kenpo.
"If you are a big tree, I am a small axe." Thank you Keith for your inspiration - from back in the day! You will always be an American Bad-Ass in my book...
@badbaz83 I remember those days. Yes Keith Hackney gave gracie a challenge. I would be willing to wager had someone try to take Hackney down in the street, they would fail because karate was taught for self defense and after the 1st failed attempt, the defender would leave the area. Im sure Keith Hackney trained for such opponents the very next day after that loss
UFC 3 – The referee was officially given the authority to stop a fight in case of a fighter being unable to defend himself. A fighter could not kick if he was wearing shoes. This rule would later be discarded, then changed to 'no kicking with shoes while on the ground' and then reinstated, before finally being discarded.
Keith should have struke or grabbed and crushed Royce's testicals, and he should have hit the brain stem or spine of the larger man he fought, though his over hand palm strike and strikes in general are viscious :D
2:17 bet part of this vid I think Hackney would have won that if he hadnt gone to the ground an pound u never g=fight a gracie on the ground thats rule number one
I do not think women would be into UFC if it was still like this. I've showed some of my friends who were girls the old fights and it wasnt appealing to them in the least.
@joeyslag actually it was not that dirty for the day bc a lot of fighters train to take shots to the balls like that plus when ur in there fighting u dont feel the pain as much bc or ur adrenalin is going so fast and hard but u defiantly will feel it after
@joeyslag it wasnt against the rules Ufc was as real as it got back then now if u fight an mma fighter on the street they wouldnt be able to handle the epic ball shots lol the only problem I have with the old ufc was that it had rules as well no bitting or eye gouging and no fish hooks to a striker those are the best ways to survive the grapplers but oh well let gracie have his fame nothing agasint them but biting and stuff really does help in street fights
@joeyslag You where never allowed to grab and crush the testicles, which is the #1 way to counter a rear-naked choke cause you can almost always slipe your hand in despite leg hooks and its more reliable than the eye gouge even, but I digress he was hitting all of the genitals. THIS is one of the reasons why REAL judo-newaza is set up with strikes and/or throws, submissions are to occur in 5 seconds give or take or to go to ground n' pound again, and Judo>>Submission Grappling>BJJ :D
yes, you were. The firsts 10 UFC had no rules. Actually 2: no biting and no eye gouging, but both broken (for example Gerard Gordeau bit Royce to the ground, but still lost). No one was disqualified for breaking the rules.
"to grab and crush the testicles, which is the #1 way to counter a rear-naked choke " that's a crap. explain how can you "grab his testicle" in this position /watch?v=zteB5sxsf9w second 0:12. And you have about 6 seconds until you go to sleep
@vaggoner No, even the first UFC had rules such as the ones I mentioned. :D You could break a rule, but it meant a fine. Gerard had teeth still in his foot from knocking out another guy, and fought 2 more fights, the final one against Gracie WITH that injury. Further, Gracie got a cardio victory, not a legit one. It takes about 10 seconds to put an average fighet to sleep AFTER you finally lock it in. And I personally have beaten one man who turned it into a street fight and attacked me with it.
those kind of things i find irrelevant. I mean, so what if the referee stoped a match, as far the other one was KO or complete unable to defend himself. In that moment is clear, you won. When the opponent is like a doth to the floor, hes to your disposition, teoretically you can make with him all what you want. I really don't understand some people obsession that you have to kill the other one to prove you won.Funny, most of those people don't even know how the fight looks like.
" It takes about 10 seconds to put an average fighet to sleep AFTER you finally lock it in" where comes this from? And what means an average and an non average fighter into a locked choke? A different anatomy or blood flow?
" And I personally have beaten one man who turned it into a street fight and attacked me with it."
different people, different choices. And finally, the rules were step by step introduced by medical and athletic comissions ( not Gracies or MMA)
@vaggoner Its called cardio guy, and I proved my point about the rules. There where other rules that fighters agreed to secretly, and fines where issued if they where broken. When you fight 3 fights in a day, the last one is all cardio, hardly technique either way. A conditioned fighter has more oxygenated blood, and can go longer without air and slightly longer with less blood flowing from the jugulars(neck attacks and breaking the neck was forbidden always, and a chop to the jugular is instant
the effect of rear naked choke is not about capacity of remaining without air. In this case would took minutes for a good conditioned athlete--if hes fresh-- or let's say 45 seconds, so, about, after some minutes of fight, when the pulse and breathing rythm is higher. However, if there are about 6 seconds as i said, or few seconds more as you think, ahat has this with what i asked you to do (how could you grabb the other ones testicles in that position?).
@vaggoner I was talking about the oxygen in your blood going to the brain idiot. And it is about 10 seconds, longer to kill. There is plenty of space to slip in a non-clenched hand and grab the groin. You can fake like you are going for the eye gouge with one hand and do it as well. If you are too slow you get a hammer lock thrown on, but if its life or death you would have to be VERY slow, specially with the attack speed advantage of moving for it first.
ah, finally...i meet several opinions in this sense ("in the cage they don't wear shoes and clothes"). Those are actually even greater advantage for fighters in street situations. About shoes, for instance
watch?v=ptXH5mlncR0
of course, is just an example from tons of them. Now let us imagine Valentijn wore shoes or boots and the other one would have been a normal street aggressor, not an 2m and 110kg trained athlete fighter. Clothes, a greater advantage for grappler.
@vaggoner Guy, I just copy pasted some of the rules for God's sake to prove to you all that there where rules, which the GRACIES set up from the beginning. Clothes go both ways and neither. Sometimes it helps a throw, sometimes it hurts. Shoes help with toughness and range but cut speed, all just a tiny bit either way...aside from steel toe and such lol On the one hand, you have gi chokes and such, on the other you have messed up throws and Savate lol
@vaggoner UFC 1 – Although the advertising said there are no rules, there were in fact some rules: no biting, no eye-gouging, and no small joint manipulation. Fights ended only in the event of a knockout, a submission, usually signaled by tapping the hand three times on the mat or opponent, or by the corner throwing in the towel. Despite this, the first match in UFC 1 was won by referee stoppage, even though it was not officially recognized as such at the time.
i fucking hate it when ppl talk shit about mr hackney i've been training out of his academy for two years and the man is a great guy he loves his fighters and is a tough love guy and yeah he did those groin shots but there was no rules but he is the greatest coach ever Hackneys Combat Academy Represent!
@chitownp1noy : Fuck them, man! I enjoyed Mr. Hackney's fights. He did good in UFC. He just lost to some Brazilian monkeys due to fatigue and broken fists. Actually, he was the one of very few men who did okay in UFC with traditional Chinese martial arts! And I'm sure he can kick some fool's head in the street no problem. I heard he was a student of Mr. Jeff Speakman. I'm still a fan of the movie The Perfect Weapon and the earlier UFC where Mr. Hackney fought!
@Easy11019 Sure, but the guy whose balls he destroyed (Joe Son) ended up getting caught sodomizing a thirteen year old. Hackney rained sweet justice down on that ball sack.
@Ljenkins9000 Oh shit, I didn't even realize. I'm remember reading about that rapist piece of shit. I formally retract my statement. Hackney obviously has the ability to see into the future in order to punish the Gonads of fuckers like Joe Son. Keith Hackney is A Real American Hero! (now you know--and knowing is half the battle)
What Hackney possessed that gave him an advantage over some of the other pure strikers who fought Gracie was wrestling experience. He knew enough to stave off the "Gracie tackle," which forced Royce to try and strike with him and eventually pull guard. His fight with Royce is maybe the first example in MMA of someone trying to sprawl-and-brawl.
Ichihara, Jimmerson, Gordeau, and Smith probably had better striking credentials than Hackney, but none lasted as long against Gracie.
"Hackney has no honor! Puching another man in his balls in a MMA fight?"
Groin strikes were legal back then. There were no rounds, no time limits, no weight classes, and technically no rules. No TKOs either. Only way out was by submission or full on KO.
@Ljenkins9000 This guy is a garbage "martial artist" if you can call him that. Suppose to be a black belt in TKD& Kempo Karate. Terrible technique; wild street fight puches and lousy kicks. One of the worst! Him and Horold Howard! Worst thing..this fraud has schools.
"Terrible technique; wild street fight puches and lousy kicks."
This was the beginning of MMA and Keith Hackney did much better with his "lousy technique" than a whole slew of world champions from Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Karate, etc. He was pretty good for his time actually. Royce Gracie said he was the best pure striker he ever fought. I think you probably are just still expecting real fights to look more like they do in movies or something.
one of my favorite fighters ever, not like the guys today that get on the ground and hug each other for 5 minutes, he had killer instinct and a headhunters mentality
@camelchute99 "one of my favorite fighters ever, not like the guys today that get on the ground and hug each other for 5 minutes"
Did you write this comment in the late 90's and for some reason just put it up now? Either that or you haven't watched any UFC in 10 years. In comparison to 1993, the level of technique today makes UFC look like a kung fu movie. Oh, and usually the people who don't like the ground game "because it's just two guys hugging" are usually still in the closet themselves.
I think you just hit the nail on the head, but not in the way you intended.
"...the level of technique today makes UFC look like a kung fu movie."
Very true, and that was exactly the reason people liked it. It was entertaining - like a kung fu movie, but real. You could argue that UFC today has been elevated to an actual sport or even an art, but where's the fun in it? Who cares about technique when you can watch a guy try to knock out a sumo wrestler?
@upzville Indeed, point well taken. What got me into watching MMA was actually those old style vs style fights (when I discovered them later on). I liked the movie Bloodsport and played Street Fighter when I was a kid, but the old UFC was the real thing. Sure most of the fights were freak show mismatches and half of them were pretty boring, but you could watch a Boxer fight a Ninja!
@Ljenkins9000 Guy, BJJ is watered down Judo-newaza, and while the Army may have been stupid enough to let Matt Larsden make BJJ level 1 combatives, the SF still agree with the ascessment that BJJ ideology of long term grappling without respect for strikes and throws is flawed. And Royce Gracie was saved by the rules of the UFC, and even now BJJ is destroyed by Judo and Submission Grappling ideology.
@wiggalama "Guy, BJJ is watered down Judo-newaza"
Oh so by "watered down" I'll assume you mean "more technical and efficient".
"And Royce Gracie was saved by the rules of the UFC"
Oh yeah, he was saved by the non-existant rules, lol. There were no rules. Even biting and eye gouging were technically legal AND DID HAPPEN, EVEN TO ROYCE GRACIE IN UFC 1. Yet he still won. So why do you hate BJJ exactly? Can you by now admit to yourself it is just jealousy?
@kenfo0 You mean, fighting with an injury, being tired, and pwing Gracie but being held back by rules which allowed Gracie a cardio victory? Yeah, OK guy :D
also it wondered me that you spoke about palm strikes as being illegal in MMA (or perhaps i mussunderstood). Groin strikes were also allowed, even if in UFC 1 we didn't see so much used, in the next UFC's yes. In Royce fight against Hackney there are several attempts from both sides, also can be seen in Hackney vs Joe Soon. I still found only restriction about biting and eye gouging.Eventually please paste one more time the rules, perhaps you have another source.
@wiggalama Sorry "guy", in my world there is "winning" and then "something else". Hackney fell into the "not winning" category here. Why, outside of some type of cheating or ref misconduct, is irrelevant. I've performed when hurt. If you can't accomplish the mission, don't get involved. If you choose to involve yourself, don't make excuses. Best wishes.
@kenfo0 1. Hackney is not Shotokan or Kyokushin, he is lesser Karate. 2. Its a sport victory, and Gracie was in better shape by far. 3. Hackney didn't even hit the groin as he should have. 4. In a rear naked, you slip your hand behind your back and grab their balls, simple. I have had to do it once when a guy ambushed me. The hooks can't stop the space behind the back nor the smallness of a knife hand going down. If you have the back on the ground, you hit the back of the head or neck or break.
ook who"s talking about idiots...have you even watched the video? First of all, i wasn't talking about preventing to be in that position, about counter the attempt, i talk about a closed rnc, more specific one like that in the movie.Faking you are going for eye...there are plenty of space to slip. You are funny. i quote you again the video. watch?v=zteB5sxsf9w ...second 0:12, closed choke, how the fuck do you grab his nuts?He can hit you in the nuts with the heel, but for what?
take that as alternative, another position. Spare the time with hypothesis point com and what could he do and how could he prevent that. All those are anyway far more titled than you.Gordeau is a guy which always played dirty when he could (see also his fight with Nakai in Vale Tudo). Take just the final position as reference. In the rest, what have you wrote in your posts, specially the pointed 1...4 just amusing things.
@vaggoner Sport doesn't prove BJJ's effectiveness, it is sport. Gordeau got tired and only broke one rule. Finally, READ YOUR DAMN WRITING, ITS SO SLEEP DEPRIVED AS TO BE PATHETIC.
"Sport doesn't prove BJJ's effectiveness, it is sport." aaah, ok, you are that kind of TMA mc dojo guy under the same generic "we are too deadly to compete".
"Gordeau got tired" wow, you are a genius. In a fight, people, among other things, get tired.Piss off, you bore me clown.
@wiggalama you simply like to ramble at yourself, so you can agree with yourself. in the same way, you think you are a "FAR better MA" in your own head. Whatever gets you through the day, nutty guy! :D
If Keith Hackney had just a little bit of understanding what BJJ was, he would have beaten Royce. I'm not talking about him studying it. I'm talking about him knowing the basics on what not to do.

ramrod20042000 1 year ago
"Hackney has no honor! Puching another man in his balls in a MMA fight?"
Groin strikes were legal back then. There were no rounds, no time limits, no weight classes, and technically no rules. No TKOs either. Only way out was by submission or full on KO.
Ljenkins9000 1 year ago

I think you probably are just still expecting real fights to look more like they do in movies or something.

why doesnt youtube have the full fight against royce?!?!?!

Maybe that's what they mean when they say a guy has no stand up hehehe
abriepieterse 1 year ago
Oh man that part with the sumo guy 3:26 is hilarious, he needs two hands to stand up but he also needs one hand to block, he's kinda screwed.

one of my favorite fighters ever, not like the guys today that get on the ground and hug each other for 5 minutes, he had killer instinct and a headhunters mentality

Ljenkins9000 1 year ago 8
@Ljenkins9000 You are 100 percent right....but if Hackney actually learned the ground game as well, he could of beat Royce Gracie.

@Ljenkins9000
But todays UFC is fake with all thoose rules. Not real fighting...
Lallar3n 1 year ago
@Lallar3n I wouldn't call it "fake". Certainly it is less realistic than the early days, but you know the fighters today are much better fighters.
Ljenkins9000 1 year ago
@Ljenkins9000
Who cares about technique when you can watch a guy try to knock out a sumo wrestler?
upzville 11 months ago

Yeah, OK guy :D
wiggalama 9 months ago
@wiggalama
also it wondered me that you spoke about palm strikes as being illegal in MMA (or perhaps i mussunderstood). Groin strikes were also allowed, even if in UFC 1 we didn't see so much used, in the next UFC's yes. In Royce fight against Hackney there are several attempts from both sides, also can be seen in Hackney vs Joe Soon. I still found only restriction about biting and eye gouging.Eventually please paste one more time the rules, perhaps you have another source.
vaggoner 9 months ago
@wiggalama Sorry "guy", in my world there is "winning" and then "something else". Hackney fell into the "not winning" category here. Why, outside of some type of cheating or ref misconduct, is irrelevant. I've performed when hurt. If you can't accomplish the mission, don't get involved. If you choose to involve yourself, don't make excuses. Best wishes.
kenfo0 9 months ago

@wiggalama
ook who"s talking about idiots...have you even watched the video? First of all, i wasn't talking about preventing to be in that position, about counter the attempt, i talk about a closed rnc, more specific one like that in the movie.Faking you are going for eye...there are plenty of space to slip. You are funny. i quote you again the video. watch?v=zteB5sxsf9w ...second 0:12, closed choke, how the fuck do you grab his nuts?He can hit you in the nuts with the heel, but for what?
vaggoner 9 months ago
@wiggalama
watch?v=9ZBb9R4HuuE
take that as alternative, another position. Spare the time with hypothesis point com and what could he do and how could he prevent that. All those are anyway far more titled than you.Gordeau is a guy which always played dirty when he could (see also his fight with Nakai in Vale Tudo). Take just the final position as reference. In the rest, what have you wrote in your posts, specially the pointed 1...4 just amusing things.
vaggoner 9 months ago
@vaggoner Sport doesn't prove BJJ's effectiveness, it is sport. Gordeau got tired and only broke one rule. Finally, READ YOUR DAMN WRITING, ITS SO SLEEP DEPRIVED AS TO BE PATHETIC.
