Wow, and to think Marco switches from this to Paul Gilbert, to Necrophagist! If Frank Zappa was still around I'm sure Marco would be playing with him.
@fuzzyboxy Just because you don't understand whats happening, doesn't have any relevance regarding the genius of this performance. I hear Brittany has a new album coming out, just for you.
There is no denying the talent here. For me though, its annoying to listen too. It's like an exercise is dissonance. lol Again, I am not bashing them as they are all amazing.
Anyone know what Brian Beller's claim to fame is - aside from being nasty at bass and frequently playing with Keneally and Minnemann? I just have no idea who else he has played with.
He also wrote articles for quite a few years at Bass Player magazine. You should also know that he has two solo albums, both of which are excellent, and not your "typical" bass-album fare.
He played with Frank when Dweezil was a toddler. He played with Steve Vai on "Frank Zappa's Universe" too. He also leads an incredible band of his own.
I'm floored. I've enjoyed the KMB stuff I've heard so far (haven't seen them live yet), but understanding that I've heard Dolphins probably 100 times, this is the first time in a long time where it felt brand new again. Stunning.
BUT..... I'm glad in a selfish way. I get to see him at the 'Tater 5 to 10 times every year. Silly as it sounds, that's one of the reasons I'll never leave LA. EVERYBODY plays here, and I NEVER miss a Tater gig.
I was at this show right up front and can say firsthand that the live sound was phenomenal. The comments about the guitar tone here did not hold true through the PA at full volume. These guys tore it up! Great stuff!
Good set. IMO MK has chosen that Charvel by mistake. It is muddy sounding at best-masks many of his gem-like riffs and basically clouds his playing. Nothing like the open pianoesque timber of a maple neck Strat with an ash or alder body to bring out the notes.
I think players sometimes fall in love with a guitar and don't account for how the new sound is percieved by the audience. Ditch that Charvel I say!
This particular trio is awesome. Best MK trapper ever? Might be..
I think the change in tone has to do with the amp he's using. It looks like he's using a EVH, which he usually does not use. That guitar has sounded wonderful in the past, but not so much here. However, I think it's the amp.
Fuckin great stuff !

His music is a little electic for most, but I have to admit it's awesomely creative.

great example of what happens when you start to believe that the less what you do sounds like music, the more sophisticated it is. terrible.

@fuzzyboxy
great example, how music outreaches us sometimes... :-)

@TATTOOEDMETEOR nah, its not outreaching me. its well within my grasp, I just have no interest in touching it.

It sounds a lot like Arnold Schönberg and expressionism overall. A mixture of tonality and atonality... really interesting.

@Gregorypeckory didn't he join Frank's touring band in 87 or 88. Dweezil was grown at that point unless you're being sarcastic.
MitchTenderness 2 years ago
I didn't know what year he joined actually. I should have said it was my impression he was with Frank before Dweezil was a fully formed musian.
