  • just got to see this song live by patti in Kansas city!!! IT WAS PHENOMINAL!!!!!!!! MANDY AND PATTI!!!

  • who in gods name can "Dislike" this?

  • i am giving her a standing ovation.... while i am alone in my bedroom.

  • I'll have to save some money. I need to buy a time machine to go back in 2008 and see this show. I NEED TO T_T

  • So powerful, so wonderful - seriously, I'm in awe...complete and total BRAVO!!!

  • OMG ..ok they have to right NOW, STOP doing Gypsy revivals cuz Folks , it doesn't get any Better than THAT !!! Lupone is freaking unbelievable !!! xoxo

  • 34 people have been Patti LuPwned!

  • Although Im not a huge fan of hers, this role is made for her!!!!!!!

  • @Sweeney1407 My thoughts exactly.

  • This made me cry. What a legend!

  • I always want to know what's going on at the end. Someone says take a bow and then there's a funny noise. Either way, this is the gold standard upon which all performances should be based. Just incredible.

  • I can't believe I was in New York and could have SEEN THIS ON BROADWAY and didn't get the chance. Ugh.

  • You know it;s good when freaking LIZA stood up and clapped!!

  • What's beautiful about this is that it had all three principals (Laura Benanti, Boyd Gaines, Patti Lupone) in character, delivering a knock-out number that makes people wish they had seen it live. (So happy that I did ...). It's not easy, to convey on electronic media, why live theater or music is important. This clip does.

  • This was the first act curtain number in the show and I burst into tears at the end of it. Truly amazing. This whole scene is about the crazy desperation of the Mama Rose character and the terrified look of Laura Benanti and how she and Boyd Gaines cling together against the stampeding onslaught of Mama Rose is so PERFECT!! Everyone in this scene deserved their TONY. Everything's Coming Up Roses is such a clever play on words. Of course, nothing less from Sondheim would do. I LOVE PATTI!!!!

  • BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT AMAZING.

    And similar words.

  • She blows me away with every performance. When she pushed the luggage cart at 3:41, was it supposed to move and was stuck? I've watched this about 25 times now and always wonder about that.

  • @ShiniRyuk It moves the tiniest bit... so I'm not sure :P

  • omg Laura looks terrified! I love it!

  • There's nothing I wouldn't do to see Patti perform that role. I wish I was there. :(

  • LEGEND

  • 3:35 to 3:55 is why this woman is an absolute goddess.

  • One of my good friends is dating her son.

  • 31 people don't know what a musical theatre legend is...

  • so this is what perfection looks like...

  • She did this production for the character, you can see it in her performance here.... the Encores performances - not so much - it was way to Patti-ized - but I am so sorry now I didn't drum up some money to see this performance.... thank God we have it preserved here! She was fantastic!

  • Patti LuPone is quite possibly the most amazing woman EVER!!!!!! If I could spend an hour with her to get a voice lesson I might die!

  • This was the first Patti video I've ever watched and at first I thought "Oh my God! She's gonna die in the middle of the song!" but now I know that, that's Patti LuPone and she NEVER dies! <3

  • I wish I had just an ounce of her talent in my vains......

  • Fucking AMAZING

  • The musical director kinda ruined the end. He should have followed her better.

  • here is what is so special about lupone: watch every video of her up on youtube where it's a bigger momentt than the average show -- whether it be a performance on the grammies, the tony awards or a major television performance. in EVERY instance she gives an absolutely legendary out of body performancet. she is , to me, the greatest pure performer I have ever seen --and I'm not really a big fan of show music. God, she is incredible.

  • @zalman595 You're so right. Everybody knows she's going to bring the house down. Hear that applause when she says "I had a dream". They're ready for it! Sooo amazing!

  • boy can she sing *_*

  • This makes me melt :D

  • The power of Patti LuPone is unbeatable. Real diva who made the carachter a real woman.

  • 31 people wouldn't know talent if it smacked them in the ass

  • @phylosaccount I am allowed to have an opinion, and I personally love this performance. Yes, I agree there are other amazing performers and she's not even my favorite, but I truly enjoy this.

  • @lizzieshername I never said you weren't allowed to have an opinion, I was just expressing my own (that's why I said I prefer :) )

  • Best Tony performance ever? Hell yes.

  • @lizzieshername lol no, even from her I prefer the Tony performance of Evita, and there are others that beat this one. Still this one is the amazingness. Patti LuPone is a great performer, but she's not the only one great performer.

  • 31 people are out of their minds...

  • She is so intense and powerful...one of my favorites!

  • patti lupon es lo mejor de broadway !!!

  • DIVA

  • I had the honour of meeting this amazing lady and working with her many years ago and she is a true deva and a real star! she has power but can perform at the same time! certain performers, ie, Michael Ball and Kerry ellis dont have this tool! Patti, YOU ROCK!!

  • Well, it's not surprising the fact that she played a batshit insane character so easily and well.

  • What a performance!!! She had the gods and goddesses of Theatre on their feet, open mouthed, like children, enraptured. To bring such joy, j'adore!

  • she is such a dominant force. I'd be very afraid if she was my stage mother!

  • flawless.

  • Now THIS is TALENT and ACTING!!!

  • I watch this every day. I have an addiction.

  • this is the millionth time i watch this...today

  • i held my breath the last 2 minutes

i didnt know i could hold my breath that long

    shes so amazing

  • One of the most amazing performances ever! Saw her on B'way. Everyone cried. This was so moving.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!! She is amazing!!!!!!!!

  • She was on glee!

  • She is legendary.

  • I wonder what it's like to have Patti Lupone belting in your face...

  • @theatreandfriends probably something like an orgasm

  • @theatreandfriends I bet it's like the clouds opening up and the face of God looking down on you. lol.

  • @theatreandfriends

Just bring a camera to a theatre and you will find out.

  • @Maseh19965 hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahah

    ahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaahahahahaahahahahahaahahaaaaaaaaahhhaahahahahahaahahahahahaahahahahahaahahahahaha THAAAAATT IS SOOOOOOOO RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • And that's how it's done! If this doesn't give you goosebumps you might be a cyborg.

  • Lupone on the Glee Season 2 Finale. Sadly I was disappointed. She had no witty one-liners, she existed only to approve of the insipid Finn and Rachel relationship plot and for a dull appearance. Sad, because even the pointless guest stars on Glee had witty lines.

However, I'm real sure that Patti Lupone was proud to be on the show she likes, she might fell that her way of paying tribute to a show that has introduced Broadway to the younger generation.

  • What's the Patti LuPone 'Sunset Boulevard situation'? I read something about and am intrigued?!

  • @markjameshowe I think what happened is she originated the role in the West End production, but didn't get the role in the Broadway production. Apparently she was so upset about it that she didn't come back to broadway for many years.

  • @markjameshowe Oh, that situation. I believe she performed Off-Broadway, critics did love her. However, Andrew Lloyd Webber broke his promise to cast her into the Broadway production and took on a different actress. She had every right to be frustrated and compensated in money. Read all about it.

  • @AliaSparrow Not off-broadway, from the original West End production

  • God Bless Arthur Laurents!!! may he rest both in peace and on his own stage!!! ;-)

  • @bryanambition i thought of this clip when i heard of his death

  • no words.

  • A musical is primarily about the music and that is how I rate performances. Too often weak singers are stepping into these classic roles. Ethel Merman was no great actress but she could sure convey emotions through her singing. I think Patti LuPone was great in Sweeney Todd and in the Encores production of Pal Joey. I saw her, Tyne Daly and Betty Buckley in Gypsy and was disappointed by PL's performance. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • 31 people are just idiots!

  • Check out Betty Buckley singing this. The video is terrible but she sours as a singer. This role should have belonged to her. And when you're finished with Gypsy check out Carrie the Musical if you want to see what an amazing performer she is.

  • ... Damn

  • If that don't give ya goosebumps, check yer pulse!

  • Holy Cow! Patti Lupone is just amazing!

  • I think the most chill part of this whole thing is seeing a Broadway star getting a standing ovation from a sea of Broadway stars.

  • Standing ovation. She is so incredible. i would give anything to be able to go back in time and see it. So powerful. <3

  • Patti LuPone was 60 years old in this part and still singing like THAT. I bow to her!

  • Patti is fantastic, both as an actress and singer. Saw her in an intimate show in Toronto last year...wow! This is real talent people.

  • what a POWERHOUSE.

  • A ghastly old hambone isn't she?

  • I hope that they name a theater after her!

  • We saw this show and enjoyed it. But I do think Bernadette Peters was better as Rose.

  • FIERCE

  • Brilliant and terrifying. A masterpiece. What a talent, what a voice! I cannot watch it without being both horrified at the character and without tears welling up in my eyes at the sheer intensity.

  • She is the very definition of a a performer.

  • PATTI. UGH. <333333333333333333333

  • @MorbidVixen

jealous? Went to NYC and found out you couldn't sing and dance, I'll bet.

  • @teeseLW ...uh, what? lol No, I just love that woman to pieces. I admire her very much. Is that bad?

  • Superb acting and superb vocals!

  • Oh my!! But, this is Lupone, after all. There will truly never be another like her.

  • Now i know why Patti won the tony award!!

  • 28 people arent going to have everything coming up roses

  • Wow....just wow. I didn't think that she could get any better than she was in Evita, but I was very mistaken.

  • Patti Lupone is the only person that could ever even be listed in the same sentance as the immortal woman who originated this role: Ms. Ethel Merman. Lupone was just made for the stage.

  • WOW!!! I have heard Patti Lupone sing before. That was unbelieveable!!! She gave me goosebumps. You can feel the instensity and emotion behind the song so well. It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat!

  • <3 <3 <3

  • fucking amazing!!! I'm in love with this talented lady. I wish I could have seen this on Broadway :/

  • I'm going to bet I'm the only straight man in the world that will admit this, but Patti LuPone just gives me goosebumps every time I see her. This is so amazing that I couldn't do anything for two minutes after seeing it but just say "wow" and stare at the ceiling. Thanks so much for posting!

  • I LOVED Liza at the end. I especially loved Mandy too! You can tell he really loves her still. XD

  • I love Patti's hat!!!!

  • Is it bad that I kind of want her to belt inches from my face too?

  • I love her last "we got nothing to HIT but the heights" at 3:10

You can feel her desperation and uncertainty behind all of this. She's lost and hurt, and it's beautifully performed and shown from there to the end

  • @broadwaymelody33 what about her "bright lights and LOLLIPOPS!" at 3:35? <3 I'm so obsessed!

  • i. love. her.

  • Superb....bravo Patti. what an instrument she has....still going strong.

  • Patti has a voice that has covered several decades of popular Broadway tunes...creating each role and making it her own! I love her..the best ever Evita...sorry Ms. Page.

  • I was fortunate enough to see the show! She got a standing O!

  • Awesome to see Mandy at the end, standing and cheering his former costar.

  • And this is exactly why I love Patti LuPone.

  • to the 28 people that don't like this video: SUCK it.

  • is this in a different key from the original cos on all the sheet music it seems to be higher? I LOVE PATTI :)

  • "Rose listen! I----" Forget LuPone, Boyd deserved that ovation!

  • SOMEONE ANSWER ME WHO KNOWS - Did anyone see the Encores production at City Center 1 year prior and also see this full production? I'd like to know what the difference was in her interpretation/direction? Patti said there were differences.

I saw the Encores but never saw the full production (I was financially inept!).

  • @rlee1976 She just felt there was more time to understand and grow into the part and the whole team re-evaluated their roles and the story and thus it had much greater depth for her and the rest.

  • @rlee1976 I would strongly recommend that you read Ben Brantley's two separate reviews for the New York Times - the one for the Encores! production and the latter Broadway transfer, his opinion of Patti's performance is different for both productions - I think this should clear things up for you

  • the amazing thing about patti in this role is that she brought it all together! Her acting is stunning and her belt just wonderful

  • LuPone has such an overpowering voice. It fits the role so damn well.

  • simply breathtaking

  • I've lost count of how many times I've played this clip. I LOVE it!

  • This.....is....SOOOO GOOD.

  • @Kafeifei Well i mean, shes Patti Lupone, you like a million to one. sorry haha

  • @Kafeifei I like her interpretation but I get what you're saying. The problem with this part is that every actress who attempts it wants to top the last one. But you can't keep ratcheting the intensity up and up forever... Frankly I thought Ethel Merman was just about right in this song.

  • @Kafeifei

I completely agree with you. I feel as though Mama Rose needs some vulnerability, not to mention sex appeal. Of course, I am a hardcore Bernadette Peters fan, so there IS a bit of bias in my opinion...

  • arthur laurents mouths at the end: "I love her as Rose."

  • Patti LuPone is amazing. I always get chills when hearing her sing.

  • ''nailed it'' took a whole new meaning BRAVA!!

  • A real Broadway treasure in the tradition of Ethel Merman, Barbara Cooke, /Angela Lansbury, and all the great ladies who have trodden the boards.

  • It's always bugged me on this video that they don't show patti taking her bow....

  • i love Laura Benanti. Patti is amazing, but I prefer Bernadette in this role. Not that Patti doesn't rock it, I am just a Bernadette fan through and through.

  • This is incredible. Patti always amazes me when she performs.

  • Astonishing. I listened to it twice in a row. Wow, just, wow!

  • @CoCoLatte48 only twice?! hahahah

  • shattering. this is what can happen when a director hires ACTORS who can sing and takes the trouble to seek out the 'reasons why'. brilliant.

  • The 28 people who 'dislike' this must be blind, deaf and dumb. THIS IS LEGENDARY.

  • Merman's voice is better, but this is still stunning!!!

  • Stunning, absolutely stunning. I never tire of watching this performance. In this number, Patti brilliantly foreshadowed Rose's Turn, something few other actresses managed. Truly legendary.

Also, I think "and I can make you now" is probably the most terrifying line in all of musical theatre.

  • It certainly is a big performance, with a powerhouse vocal, but it doesn't really stir any emotion in me. It feels kinda hammy, and bellicose.

  • @ikenbrodt The last note was the best part, well obviously.

  • she was on Jimmy Fallon last week and sang this song and it was sped up so fast i guess to make time...it just ruined the feeling of the song....broadcast networks are just so sucky with quality

  • She is amazing and will love her forever.....she even WROTE back to me last year!!!!!

    I still have the e-mail.....what a woman!!!!

  • @TallBrunette821 do you have her e-mail?!?!?!?!

  • saw her in Gypsy on Broadway and it was the first time I've ever seen someone get a standing ovation in the MIDDLE of a show before, she was amazing!

  • Whoa.

  • I am beginning to love her more and more..

  • i had the chance to see gypsy back in 08 in broadway, she is REALLY AMAZING!!!

  • i have seen true beauty!!!!

  • I like how she says lollipops lol

  • See my tribute @BillFovargue

  • Comment removed

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • she is amazing at everything she does

  • the performance of Patti as Rose is impeccable, but her musical performance, OMG, it ruined the best music of Gypsy, Bernadette yes did justice to "Rose's Turn" in the context of the play, the disappointment of Mama Rose, abandonment, Patti did as if it was a maniacal, it was absurd, but this performance was incredibly beautiful :)

  • @everybodyliesx sorry but you can't sing like her... that's for sure!

  • @scorpioninpink i don't want to sing like her. she's awful.

  • Really ??????

  • I still get goose bumps.

  • @KellyBevel SHE IS THE BEST THERE!

  • @KellyBevel hu? bernadette peters? yea she is way better. so is angela

  • chills up and down my spine! FLAWLESS! PERFECTION!

  • The performance translated = Suck my dick Ethel and Peters

  • her rich, full timbre reminds me so much of judy garland's here. i luv it!

  • this has to rank right up there with jennifer holliday's performance in '82 as one of the greatest ever at the tony awards. spine-chilling.

  • I've been watching this video frequently since it first appeared in June 2008. Every SINGLE time I watch it, I get shivers down my spine. Incredible, every time. That last note - WOW

  • what a flawless performance by one of broadways best :D. i wish i couldve seen this.

  • I will say this, as much as i love patty here, i would hate to be louise and have that Humongous voice in my face. i think it would hurt.
