I wrote a book called "Beethoven's Immortal" about who the "Immortal Beloved" really is. My take on it is that the reason nobody was ever able to find out about who she was is because she is from the future. It is a time travel story and available at Synergebooks and Amazon Kindle.
This concept explains a bumper sticker I came up with years ago...it said, "Lyrics are for people who cannot understand music!" The music itself tells what the composer was feeling and experiencing. The emotions are there in a very tangible form. Lyrics are not needed to convey the language of the heart.
Beethoven is a great inspiration for all musicians around the world. Beethoven is the essence of music itself. He is simply a music GOD in his own universe and uses his music in a simplistic manner. I dont believe anyone can truly reach his level on music, but thats just my opinion.
@Chopofiev why? lol I have a black friend who is in college studying music and violin ;P although I imagine in Beethoven's time it would have been quite rare
but in that case you can only write sad music when you are sad, and happy music when your happy, or serious music when you are serious... and that is no not entirely true
@abluesman100 It's George Bridgetower. Beethoven originally wanted to dedicated his famous Kreutzer Sonate to Bridgetower instead to Rodolphe Kreutzer, but Bridgetower insulted some woman around Beethoven, so this didn't happen.
the TRUE story of this encounter was, the prodigy said Beethoven played....he banged on the piano forte`
Totally fucked it up. he couldn't play.....Hollywood cleans up history doesn't it? That it was a rehearsal was correct. That it was an African prodigy is correct. However....Beethoven so muddled the rehearsal that behind Ludwigs back a conductor stood behind ludwig up in the rafters when this premiered to great success...
My favorite Beethoven song. I have loved misoc all of my life. I never knew why until I saw this scene. It finally solved the mystery. Thank You for this timeless classic. Who is this violinist?? I know Bridgewater did play with Beethoven for a short while.
The idea conveyed in this scene is common in all great art. I've always been suprised about how many people that I've met , who call themselves artist, don't understand this.
I have been explaining to my students how to interpret Beethoven' music for many years . It is so interesting to watch from film what Beethoven explain the meaning of music . I visited his house long time ago in Vienna .This film brought me wonderful memories when I studied in Vienna . Thank you for posting
Gary Oldman, what an actor. He can play the piano for real! And how he looks like Luigi still amazes me. I just saw another famous musician on TV: Nigel Kennedy. I think Oldman and Kennedy looks similar in a way.
Various friends and I have watched this film and we still shout at the tv screen...NO take the other stairway...... stupid woman putting his note under the doily. : ^ )
@feurzug absolutley! there were Africans during that time who were not enslaved, in fact there were some Africans in America who owned slaves themselves
yeah, this is a great scene. This was actually originally written by Tolstoy, though. It's from The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Short Stories (I think the title of the story was actually "The Kreutzer Sonata" :P).
Still, great scene, Gary Oldman is perfect as Beethoven :D! And, of course, Beethoven's music is beyond description...
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies. Thanks for uploading this! It's not often that a movie has a scene or story that affects your life or changes your perspective, but this is one of those for me. It really opened my eyes to understanding music and art. Wonderfully done on every level.
Its not in the same league as Amadeus, but its not that bad none the less. Its actually rather touching in some areas, and Oldman's performance is amazing.
on the contrary, I think this film is more meaningul than Amadeus can ever be. For me, Amadeus is just a Hollywood movie made to "entertain", this movie however actullay teaches people who don't know about music, what "Music" is actually about. It's far more "accurate" than Amadeus, even if it's fictious still. Plus, Oldman's performance is peerless.
Amadeus is a classic and Great..And so is Immortal Beloved. I will say this...Amadeus is a better film..But Immortal Beloved NEEDS to be watched also..Its a GREAT film.

The screen writer is not correct here. In the great pieces it is not the mental state of the composer that we are dragged into. If we could only feel his mental state we would be of the stuff of words--pure intellectualism without the divine feel. Instead it is our soul that responds feelingly, filling us with our immortal home--when, and only if the composer creates (usually unbeknownst to himself) from his soul. Then is the listener of 'The Ecstacy' by John Donne.

Gary Oldman is a god among men. His face is the work of angels, and his talent his far above most other actors of our time. Ugh. Want.
