2:20 in this video is my personal favorite cinematic moment.
This is the resolution to Jack's inner conflict. I love the symbolism portrayed in him tearing off his false identity (already tattered by the flames of failure) to show his classic pin strip tuxedo (representative of his true identity) underneath. This movie captivates me emotionally more than any other that I have ever seen and it will always have a sacred place in my heart.
I watching this while writing with my jack pen in my jack notebook... i think this movie is pretty amazing :D Also, this song is amazing because he finally gets his spirit back and it is my 2nd favorite song in this movie :)
@mrfivegold and @piratenolan did I say it was a Tim Burton film? I said he was THE MAN and that this is one of my favourite films. Calm down and sip some tea.
Sweet Jesus! Calm down I only made a comment you bunch of old men's testicles! Was Tim Burton or was he not a part of the production of this movie? Therefore he was involved, sweet jesus you lot need to chill a bit!
@Ezza3Regan Tim Burton produced he did not direct or come up with the story he his touch to this was limited to just producing it nothing more so quit saying he made this he did not.
@mrfivegold You're wrong. He may not have directed it, but he DID create the story. It says so on the credits. It's based on his poem of the same name. He also came up with the character designs, even for Sally, who wasn't even in the original poem. Lastly, he worked with Danny Elfman on the music. In fact, the music was made before the movie. He would have directed it himself, but he had to direct Batman Returns. So, he hired his friend, Henry Selick, knowing he would do a great job.
@fanime1 First off the poem was a paragraph long and I doubt a paragraph long poem could fit all the points of this films story. The finer points were done by Michael McDowell. He did the screenplay all Tim did was a lowsy one paragraph poem. The character designs he was a consultant on he just said, "I like this" or "I hate that" and most often "can you make it more like this?". Lastly any moron can callaborate on a music genius like Elfman by just adding sme lines to the lyrics. Burtons a hack
@mrfivegold What?! You don't know what you're talking about. The poem was so much longer than a paragraph. You must be thinking about Corpse Bride, which came from a folk story that was a paragraph long. And the poem was NOT lousy. I don't see you writing any poetry, so you shouldn't be talking. And yes, he was a consultant for the character designs, but he drew the original character designs HIMSELF and if you see his drawings against the movie, you see they didn't deviate from his work.
@fanime1 Oops your right I was mistakening Corpse Bride with Nightmare before christmas, but the lets face it for someone credited so much on this project but doing less so is actually MUCH better than most of his works which he had FULL control over..."Batman Returns -cought". I mean he can create his own world but he seems to forget the original attention and needs somebody who can say "no Burton we are dong it this way not THAT way". Face it the guy needs borders to suceed.
@mrfivegold I actually like Batman Returns. I think it's one of the best Batman films ever made. I feel that it really stayed true to the spirit of Batman. And anyway, borders are good for every director. The only reason Jaws was successful was because Spielberg didn't like the mechanical shark he was originally going to use. Those setbacks created a classic film and made Spielberg a household name.
@fanime1 Are we talking about Spielberg...no, we are talking about Burton and how if not watched like the ADD kid he is he will just go off the main idea. Batman Returns yes is good but because it had great actors and a compelling story he didn't write. He just made something cool into creepy and self indulgent. He practically made batman his bitch. People saw that and noticed it didn't age well so they dropped his ass, the last two I hated but comeone Burton caused those two fims du to himself.
@mrfivegold Actually, people just didn't like how creepy the film was, since they wanted to make Batman family friendly. That's why they didn't let him direct anymore. And that's when Batman went downhill. So yeah, making Batman more family friendly really worked out (I'm being sarcastic, btw).
@fanime1 First of all in comment arguments you wait to the other replies to continue it. And the reason we got the last two batman films was because he fucked up. Because they didn't want a guy who turned a Good gritty movie like batman and jurn out his ussually clay moddelled world on acid. He took too many liberties like Batman killing the big guy the bomb, I mean its against Batmans character to kill, in the movie version he had damn good reason but there it was just needless.
@mrfivegold Well, it's a reply. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? I give my argument, you give your counter, than I give my counter. By the way, there's a difference between clay motion and stop motion. Not all stop motion uses clay, and Tim Burton does NOT use clay. Either way, I still believe Batman Returns is one of the greatest Batman films, and many people agree with me. I like how he made the movie look, so I can't agree with what you said.
@fanime1 I never said it wasn't good it just didn't present Batman as BATMAN. Its a Batman film not a Tim Burton Film. He took too many liberties with the story and characters and created it in his own image basically. He properly would of done a better job if he did the EXACT same story only with different characters not associated with DC. I mean which Batman sequal would YOU say is better "Batman returns" or "The Dark Knight"?
@mrfivegold Oh God. Don't make me choose. I love them both equally. But to be honest, Christopher Nolan's realistic style bothers me. Film is meant to escape from reality, not recreate it. I love films that are imaginative, and those are the types of films I want to do. That's why I like Paprika better than Inception. Same concept, but one is really like a dream, and therefore, more imaginative.
@fanime1 I understand your like for surrealism. But you have to admit if you read the DC comic or watched the animated series, which Batman film would you said is BATMAN? I mean that film set Burtons career and allowed him to create this and the sequel I think should be matched up against Nolans sequel. Which one would beat the other, Batman Returns or The Dark Knight which was has his own creativity but remains true. Which one squeels out BATMAN!?
@mrfivegold I LOVE the animated series! I grew up on that! But the animated series was based on Tim Burton's Batman. It even has the same theme from the movie! So I'm sorry, I have to say Tim Burton's Batman squeals out Batman for me, and that is what I honestly believe.
@fanime1 First off the only thing Batman the animated series had in common with the film was two things, one the first illustration of the penguin was close to the Tim Burton feel and second it had many of the same basic soundtrack and car. After that only similarities it really created its own feel and helped spawn a whole contiuity franchise, Superman, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond. And sadly I'm afraid you are suffering from a illness known as Nostalgia which blinds on judgement
@mrfivegold So what? I know I have Nostalgia, but it's not an illness. So I prefer the dark, imaginative Batman vs. the realistic Batman. So what? Some people like the Adam West campy Batman and you don't see me saying that they are blind! I bet you would say that though, because apparently, they have a disease called Nostalgia too.
@mrfivegold But that's the issue. Everyone has a different idea of what is Batman. I read the original comics and he was campy in the beginning. It wasn't until later than he became darker and evolved into the Batman we know today. In short, Batman changed over time, so there are different ideas of what Batman is. Therefore, to ask which is more Batman is really about preference.
@fanime1 Campy? His parents died, he faced a killer clown the campiness didn't happen until the television series came out and even then it was short to the later half of the sixties. After that it dealt with its orginal dark storyline. A man facing his own madness while aiding his city with the madness that it had given to him. In a very over the top super hero way. I mean even in the campy years the Joker killed a fucking baby with poisoned milk for crying out loud. Is that no dark enough?
@mrfivegold Uh...no. The first issue of Batman never mentioned his past. That was, again, added later. You have to read the original comics. Trust me, I was shocked too, but they were campy and corny in the beginning.
@fanime1 Sigh, that is the the ladder half of the golden age. First issue it DOES say Bruce Waynes origin then later it dives into his exploits, and exploits of the villians, and before the series arived came the origin of the Joker told in third person as he was once known as the Red Hood who fell into some chemicals and become "The Clown Prince of Crime" I read all the issues, I own most of them I know what I am talking about.
@fanime1 Not "present him best" has the idea of batman the best. I mean be honest which one is just more a Batman of a film Burtons version or Noleans? And why do you keep changing the fine points of my questions? I say which best represents batman you say present. I say the guy didn't deserve the name above the title you say but he wrote the poem...WTF?
@mrfivegold I meant to say represent. Sorry I forgot to put two letters. Anyway, I'm saying that I don't have an issue with his name being on the title because he wrote the story and chose the people to work on the team. He was originally going to direct it, but got hired for Batman Returns. He couldn't just put the project on hiatus. Films don't work that way. So, he hired Selick to direct it. Selick put his name on the title because it's really his baby. He put his heart into that film.
@fanime1 It doesn't matter whether he directed it or not or did the story my point is he didn't do it all HIMSELF SO TO PUT HIS NAME AT FRONT OF THE TITLE IN THE FILM WORL MEANS HE DID IT ALL HIMSELF SCRIPT, MUSIC COMPOSITION, AND DIRECTION. THAT IS MOSTLY DONE IN INDEPENTDENT FILMS AND STUDENT FILMS BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY DO THEY DO IT ALL BY THEMSELVES. WITH THAT MOVIE THERE WAS NO EXCUSE FOR IT POEM, DIRECTION OR WHAT EVER HE DID, UNLESS HE DID THOSE CATEGORIES BY HIMSELF THERE I NO EXCUSE
@mrfivegold There is no such thing as a director doing all of that on their own. If what you say if true, then directors should NEVER put their name on a title. What's the big deal if they do? They worked hard on it, so they deserve it.
@mrfivegold And lastly, what he did with Elfman was NOT just putting in some lines. He explained his story to him. Elfman would write lyrics for some parts of the poem and present them to Tim. Tim would tell him what he thinks and make suggestions. And the rest is history. In the end of the day, no Tim Burton=no Nightmare Before Christmas. There's a reason it's called TIM BURTON'S The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's all his story! Haven't you ever seen the title card?
@fanime1 Kinda like how Stan Lee created the story of Spiderman but would YOU have him direct it...no. The guy if he did direct and had COMPLETE control we would get the same twisted world that missed its orginal meaning. The guy has talent sure I like what he did with Batman but come on can you really say to me that it was HIS greatness that made this, he had people who contributed flavor to his poem sure he contributed too but it was a group effort and for him getting such esteem is ignorant.
@mrfivegold I'm not saying that Tim Burton alone made Nightmare awesome. As a future film director, I KNOW how much work gets put into a film. I know it's a collaborative effort. But in the end of the day, he made the story and the characters, so he did have an important part in making the film.
@fanime1 I never said he wasn't I just said he shouldn't be praised so much for it if he had help from others. I mean come one the story does not make the film its not like he wrote the script by himself, did the music, character models, he had alot of input I think its simply self centred to have his name on top of a movie like he wrote the book on it like JRR Tolkein did with LOTR. It doesn't matter if he wrote a poem and helped it into a movie he shouldnt take God like credit.
@mrfivegold But it is like JRR Tolkein, since Tolkeien created LOTR and Tim Burton created TNBC. And by the way, just because he didn't write the script, it doesn't mean he should get his credit taken away. I mean, how many writers of books really write the script for movie-versions of their books.
@fanime1 They asked for it in script so he got Micheal McDowell to write it they funded it and copyrighted it, Tim became a creative consaltant and producer while Disney hired the team to work on the porject. So yeah Team Effort. It may have been less narcassistic if they put there The Burton Team presents...
@mrfivegold Really?! I read that Tim Burton hired the team. And by the way, that's what happens in every movie! Just because the person writes the original story, doesn't mean that they have to write the script. I don't know if you know this, but script-writing is different from regular writing. That's why writers usually DON'T write scripts for movie-versions of their stories. What's wrong with that?
@fanime1 Hiring and PAYING for a two different things. Whats wrong with the script concept is, the POEM was not published before hand therefore its considered Non-published material. He basically wrote down a summary in poem form and had the script writer do what most published material have, "a three arc story". The beginning, body, and conclusion. The poem wasn't not stabelled with that essential material so the hardest job was for McDowell to make it all make sense on the big screen.
@mrfivegold What do you mean? The poem did have a three-arc structure. It had a beginning, middle, and end. And what's wrong with the poem being published or not? If I wrote a short story version of a film I want to do and never published it (which by the way, is what I have been doing), would you such a big deal about it when I do make it into a film? Lastly, Tim Burton CHOSE Henry and Elfman for TNBC, not Disney.
@fanime1 If I said Disney choose which I doubt I apologize but they did PAY for them, secondly I read the poem he told a story like most poems do though a two act structure. The first half being the Characters rise, the second being his fall and even out. The script doesn't work like that most of the time. There a rules for it, Burton obiously doesn't know those rules which was why he provided a rhyming premise, and by the by a short story is WAY different that a narative poem.
@mrfivegold Just because his poem has a two-act structure, doesn't mean that he doesn't know how to write in a three-act stricture. Screenwriting is a skill! Not every writer can do it! Even if you're the greatest writer in the world, it doesn't mean you can write a script. And what do you have against poems? If you ask me, poems are harder to write than short stories (I know, I write short stories, poems, AND novels), so if anything, you should appreciate the work Tim Burton put into the poem.
@fanime1 Are you paid to write? Are you at least in a college acredited program that helps you write for film, publication, or video games? Do you understand that a poem although creative is not the basis for getting funding for a film, and that it will require a whole nest of creative ,minds and to give ONE man the head lining of the title just because he wrote the films summary as a poem and put in some creative input not only mocks everyone involved like they did shit for the film.
@mrfivegold BTW, I am a university student, so I do get advice. But I don't hear you complaining about other films. I don't hear you complaining about how George Lucas gets all the credit for Star Wars, how Stephen Spielberg gets all the credit for Jurassic Park, and so on. People don't want to say all the people that work in a movie. That takes forever. That's why credits are so long. That's why they give all the credit to one person. Lastly, the poem still made the film possible.
@fanime1 Did SpielBerg, Lucas, Woody Allen, Camereon, Nolan, or Jackson intentionally put their names above the title...no. They are credited by others who say Lucas's Star Wars or Camereons Avatar but they don't have the jerkiness to put their name above the title like they wrote the fucker in a published novel. Because they didn't thats why they didn't but Burton did and that is why he is a jerk and a hack because he has no respect for the creative team that helped him with it.
@mrfivegold That's not true. How do you know? Have you ever met Tim? I had a friend who did, and he was very respectful. If he is such a jerk, then why are people willing to work with him again? Because he is so fun to work with. He's very friendly towards his cast and crew. Why does it matter to you so much that it was a poem and it wasn't published? It's still his story, his characters, his movie. He was the one who wanted the movie made and worked very hard to make it happen.
@fanime1 Still harping about the poem? He didn't direct, he didn't do the script, he didn't do the music he helped yet he gets accredited to the whole fucking thing. No one EVER producer or directed got that honor of having the name officially being placed before the title, that is reserved for people who did basically EVERYTHING by themselves. Even then they are humble enough not to do so, yet he spat in everyones faces and said FUCK YOU BITCHES MY NAME GOES HERE BECAUSE I AM GOD!
@mrfivegold Oh yeah, because every director does the music for his/her own film. And that's not true. There are a few movies that had the director's name on the title. If you see the cover of Clockwork Orange, it actually says: Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. He didn't even write that book and he still got his name in the title. Lastly, Tim Burton didn't put his name on the title. The crew did because they felt he earned it!
@fanime1 Kuebrick is a jerk too, he took all the fucking fame on a movie that was novel before and place his name on top because he was the director, I mean there is a thing called giving credit when credit is due. They didn't give everyone the same credit, apprently the first name poping up in the credit roll wasn't good enough they needed their names ontop of the title on the films cover and posters. What the fuck? Wher eis th humility?
@mrfivegold Sure Stanley was a jerk, but Tim Burton isn't. I know people enjoy working with him. Anyway, Tim Burton didn't care whether or not his name was on the title. That was added to show that it was his story. He's not taking credit for everything, but he did work hard on it. He was going to direct it himself, but he had to direct Batman Returns, so he asked his friend to direct it. Henry put his name on the title, not Burton.
@fanime1 *Breahtes in*...."sigh" he wanted his name up there, because he thought he deserved it. That in the film world is reserved for independent films or student films because it shows that they did it most by themselves and that they own it basically. In this context it supposed to show they added something to the same caliber to the piece. Burton wrote the summary, he was a creative consultant, and a producer... does he deserve that honor no, because others helped too in those areas.
@mrfivegold Every movie has help. It's hard to make a film yourself. Anyway, he does deserve it because it wasn't Disney who wanted this film made. Heck, Disney didn't even say it was theirs until it became popular. It was Tim Burton who wanted it made. He loved the story he wrote and wanted to make it into a film. So, he got people together to make it, since he had to do Batman 2.
@fanime1 Are you even understanding my point, let me repeat so it clarifies in the film world having your name in front of the title means you did all the creative in put to create the output. Because he did three thongs doesn't excuse him making it his "crowing acheivement" understand?
@mrfivegold I understand, but I completely disagree with you. He DOES deserve it! You have no idea how much of his heart and soul he put into this project. It was low-budget, difficult, and took three years, and it turned out great anyway because he cared so much about it.
@fanime1 Tim Burton didn't direct the movie. Henry Selick did. Tim Burton is just the producer. He actually didn't do a whole lot in the making of the movie. In fact anytime he visited the set where they were shooting he would actually set them back a couple of months because he would accidentally destroy a piece or he would bump into one of the characters. That's probably why it took three years. The reason why it's Tim Burton's Nightmare is because he wrote the poem it was based on. That's it.
@hahaha4556 I never said he directed it. I am a huge fan of both this movie and Tim Burton, so I know that already. It didn't take three years to make because Tim Burton bumped into the set. Three years is the average time it would take to make any animated film at the time. How long did you think it usually took?
@fanime1 I just said that because you made it sound like he directed it. Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with this movie, and Tim Burton is a good director too (he did make Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd, after all). Before I read the 'bump into sets' thing, I thought it took about one or two years. Then I read that, and I figured I was right. After talking to some artists, I figured longer, and this movie got off lucky. Thanks for telling me the average time.

@hahaha4556 Yeah but Burton created the characters and the story. In my opinion this is his best creation and his best film, even though Selick did direct. He did a great job with Coraline. I wish Burton would make originals again instead of remakes
@fanime1 And as for directing it... still doesn't excuse him for having his name up there, direction or no its to show you did it all by youself from script to summary, to music composition and direction.
@mrfivegold What director does the music for their film? Film and music are two different mediums! I never heard of a director who did the music for the film. And no, using garage band or a similar program or using non-copyrighted music does NOT count.

The Angels are fast,
Faster than you can believe.
Don't turn your back,
Don't look away,
And DON'T BLINK.

THUMBS UP IF YOUR HERE BECAUSE TIM BURTON IS THE MAN AND THIS IS ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE FILMS.
Ezza3Regan 8 months ago 178
@Ezza3Regan This isn't a Tim Burton film. Yes, he produced it, and yes it looks like his style, but it is a Henry Selick film.
piratenolan 4 months ago
@Ezza3Regan Tim Burton produced he did not direct or come up with the story he his touch to this was limited to just producing it nothing more so quit saying he made this he did not.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold You're wrong. He may not have directed it, but he DID create the story. It says so on the credits. It's based on his poem of the same name. He also came up with the character designs, even for Sally, who wasn't even in the original poem. Lastly, he worked with Danny Elfman on the music. In fact, the music was made before the movie. He would have directed it himself, but he had to direct Batman Returns. So, he hired his friend, Henry Selick, knowing he would do a great job.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 First off the poem was a paragraph long and I doubt a paragraph long poem could fit all the points of this films story. The finer points were done by Michael McDowell. He did the screenplay all Tim did was a lowsy one paragraph poem. The character designs he was a consultant on he just said, "I like this" or "I hate that" and most often "can you make it more like this?". Lastly any moron can callaborate on a music genius like Elfman by just adding sme lines to the lyrics. Burtons a hack
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold What?! You don't know what you're talking about. The poem was so much longer than a paragraph. You must be thinking about Corpse Bride, which came from a folk story that was a paragraph long. And the poem was NOT lousy. I don't see you writing any poetry, so you shouldn't be talking. And yes, he was a consultant for the character designs, but he drew the original character designs HIMSELF and if you see his drawings against the movie, you see they didn't deviate from his work.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Oops your right I was mistakening Corpse Bride with Nightmare before christmas, but the lets face it for someone credited so much on this project but doing less so is actually MUCH better than most of his works which he had FULL control over..."Batman Returns -cought". I mean he can create his own world but he seems to forget the original attention and needs somebody who can say "no Burton we are dong it this way not THAT way". Face it the guy needs borders to suceed.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I actually like Batman Returns. I think it's one of the best Batman films ever made. I feel that it really stayed true to the spirit of Batman. And anyway, borders are good for every director. The only reason Jaws was successful was because Spielberg didn't like the mechanical shark he was originally going to use. Those setbacks created a classic film and made Spielberg a household name.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Are we talking about Spielberg...no, we are talking about Burton and how if not watched like the ADD kid he is he will just go off the main idea. Batman Returns yes is good but because it had great actors and a compelling story he didn't write. He just made something cool into creepy and self indulgent. He practically made batman his bitch. People saw that and noticed it didn't age well so they dropped his ass, the last two I hated but comeone Burton caused those two fims du to himself.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Actually, people just didn't like how creepy the film was, since they wanted to make Batman family friendly. That's why they didn't let him direct anymore. And that's when Batman went downhill. So yeah, making Batman more family friendly really worked out (I'm being sarcastic, btw).
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 First of all in comment arguments you wait to the other replies to continue it. And the reason we got the last two batman films was because he fucked up. Because they didn't want a guy who turned a Good gritty movie like batman and jurn out his ussually clay moddelled world on acid. He took too many liberties like Batman killing the big guy the bomb, I mean its against Batmans character to kill, in the movie version he had damn good reason but there it was just needless.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Well, it's a reply. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? I give my argument, you give your counter, than I give my counter. By the way, there's a difference between clay motion and stop motion. Not all stop motion uses clay, and Tim Burton does NOT use clay. Either way, I still believe Batman Returns is one of the greatest Batman films, and many people agree with me. I like how he made the movie look, so I can't agree with what you said.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 I never said it wasn't good it just didn't present Batman as BATMAN. Its a Batman film not a Tim Burton Film. He took too many liberties with the story and characters and created it in his own image basically. He properly would of done a better job if he did the EXACT same story only with different characters not associated with DC. I mean which Batman sequal would YOU say is better "Batman returns" or "The Dark Knight"?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Oh God. Don't make me choose. I love them both equally. But to be honest, Christopher Nolan's realistic style bothers me. Film is meant to escape from reality, not recreate it. I love films that are imaginative, and those are the types of films I want to do. That's why I like Paprika better than Inception. Same concept, but one is really like a dream, and therefore, more imaginative.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 I understand your like for surrealism. But you have to admit if you read the DC comic or watched the animated series, which Batman film would you said is BATMAN? I mean that film set Burtons career and allowed him to create this and the sequel I think should be matched up against Nolans sequel. Which one would beat the other, Batman Returns or The Dark Knight which was has his own creativity but remains true. Which one squeels out BATMAN!?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I LOVE the animated series! I grew up on that! But the animated series was based on Tim Burton's Batman. It even has the same theme from the movie! So I'm sorry, I have to say Tim Burton's Batman squeals out Batman for me, and that is what I honestly believe.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 First off the only thing Batman the animated series had in common with the film was two things, one the first illustration of the penguin was close to the Tim Burton feel and second it had many of the same basic soundtrack and car. After that only similarities it really created its own feel and helped spawn a whole contiuity franchise, Superman, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond. And sadly I'm afraid you are suffering from a illness known as Nostalgia which blinds on judgement
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold So what? I know I have Nostalgia, but it's not an illness. So I prefer the dark, imaginative Batman vs. the realistic Batman. So what? Some people like the Adam West campy Batman and you don't see me saying that they are blind! I bet you would say that though, because apparently, they have a disease called Nostalgia too.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 I asked which one was more like Batman than the other it was not the question on which one you liked better but which one was more BATMAN.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold But that's the issue. Everyone has a different idea of what is Batman. I read the original comics and he was campy in the beginning. It wasn't until later than he became darker and evolved into the Batman we know today. In short, Batman changed over time, so there are different ideas of what Batman is. Therefore, to ask which is more Batman is really about preference.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Campy? His parents died, he faced a killer clown the campiness didn't happen until the television series came out and even then it was short to the later half of the sixties. After that it dealt with its orginal dark storyline. A man facing his own madness while aiding his city with the madness that it had given to him. In a very over the top super hero way. I mean even in the campy years the Joker killed a fucking baby with poisoned milk for crying out loud. Is that no dark enough?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Uh...no. The first issue of Batman never mentioned his past. That was, again, added later. You have to read the original comics. Trust me, I was shocked too, but they were campy and corny in the beginning.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Sigh, that is the the ladder half of the golden age. First issue it DOES say Bruce Waynes origin then later it dives into his exploits, and exploits of the villians, and before the series arived came the origin of the Joker told in third person as he was once known as the Red Hood who fell into some chemicals and become "The Clown Prince of Crime" I read all the issues, I own most of them I know what I am talking about.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold But, still, everyone has a different idea of what Batman is, so it is difficult to say which movie presents him best.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Not "present him best" has the idea of batman the best. I mean be honest which one is just more a Batman of a film Burtons version or Noleans? And why do you keep changing the fine points of my questions? I say which best represents batman you say present. I say the guy didn't deserve the name above the title you say but he wrote the poem...WTF?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I meant to say represent. Sorry I forgot to put two letters. Anyway, I'm saying that I don't have an issue with his name being on the title because he wrote the story and chose the people to work on the team. He was originally going to direct it, but got hired for Batman Returns. He couldn't just put the project on hiatus. Films don't work that way. So, he hired Selick to direct it. Selick put his name on the title because it's really his baby. He put his heart into that film.
fanime1 4 months ago
WITH THAT MOVIE THERE WAS NO EXCUSE FOR IT POEM, DIRECTION OR WHAT EVER HE DID, UNLESS HE DID THOSE CATEGORIES BY HIMSELF THERE I NO EXCUSE
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold There is no such thing as a director doing all of that on their own. If what you say if true, then directors should NEVER put their name on a title. What's the big deal if they do? They worked hard on it, so they deserve it.
fanime1 4 months ago
@mrfivegold And lastly, what he did with Elfman was NOT just putting in some lines. He explained his story to him. Elfman would write lyrics for some parts of the poem and present them to Tim. Tim would tell him what he thinks and make suggestions. And the rest is history. In the end of the day, no Tim Burton=no Nightmare Before Christmas. There's a reason it's called TIM BURTON'S The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's all his story! Haven't you ever seen the title card?
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Kinda like how Stan Lee created the story of Spiderman but would YOU have him direct it...no. The guy if he did direct and had COMPLETE control we would get the same twisted world that missed its orginal meaning. The guy has talent sure I like what he did with Batman but come on can you really say to me that it was HIS greatness that made this, he had people who contributed flavor to his poem sure he contributed too but it was a group effort and for him getting such esteem is ignorant.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I'm not saying that Tim Burton alone made Nightmare awesome. As a future film director, I KNOW how much work gets put into a film. I know it's a collaborative effort. But in the end of the day, he made the story and the characters, so he did have an important part in making the film.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 I never said he wasn't I just said he shouldn't be praised so much for it if he had help from others. I mean come one the story does not make the film its not like he wrote the script by himself, did the music, character models, he had alot of input I think its simply self centred to have his name on top of a movie like he wrote the book on it like JRR Tolkein did with LOTR. It doesn't matter if he wrote a poem and helped it into a movie he shouldnt take God like credit.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold But it is like JRR Tolkein, since Tolkeien created LOTR and Tim Burton created TNBC. And by the way, just because he didn't write the script, it doesn't mean he should get his credit taken away. I mean, how many writers of books really write the script for movie-versions of their books.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Was his little poem published before it became a movie?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I know that he had to ask Disney for it before he made the movie, so I'm guessing that Disney owned it.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 They asked for it in script so he got Micheal McDowell to write it they funded it and copyrighted it, Tim became a creative consaltant and producer while Disney hired the team to work on the porject. So yeah Team Effort. It may have been less narcassistic if they put there The Burton Team presents...
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Really?! I read that Tim Burton hired the team. And by the way, that's what happens in every movie! Just because the person writes the original story, doesn't mean that they have to write the script. I don't know if you know this, but script-writing is different from regular writing. That's why writers usually DON'T write scripts for movie-versions of their stories. What's wrong with that?
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Hiring and PAYING for a two different things. Whats wrong with the script concept is, the POEM was not published before hand therefore its considered Non-published material. He basically wrote down a summary in poem form and had the script writer do what most published material have, "a three arc story". The beginning, body, and conclusion. The poem wasn't not stabelled with that essential material so the hardest job was for McDowell to make it all make sense on the big screen.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold What do you mean? The poem did have a three-arc structure. It had a beginning, middle, and end. And what's wrong with the poem being published or not? If I wrote a short story version of a film I want to do and never published it (which by the way, is what I have been doing), would you such a big deal about it when I do make it into a film? Lastly, Tim Burton CHOSE Henry and Elfman for TNBC, not Disney.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 If I said Disney choose which I doubt I apologize but they did PAY for them, secondly I read the poem he told a story like most poems do though a two act structure. The first half being the Characters rise, the second being his fall and even out. The script doesn't work like that most of the time. There a rules for it, Burton obiously doesn't know those rules which was why he provided a rhyming premise, and by the by a short story is WAY different that a narative poem.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Just because his poem has a two-act structure, doesn't mean that he doesn't know how to write in a three-act stricture. Screenwriting is a skill! Not every writer can do it! Even if you're the greatest writer in the world, it doesn't mean you can write a script. And what do you have against poems? If you ask me, poems are harder to write than short stories (I know, I write short stories, poems, AND novels), so if anything, you should appreciate the work Tim Burton put into the poem.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Are you paid to write? Are you at least in a college acredited program that helps you write for film, publication, or video games? Do you understand that a poem although creative is not the basis for getting funding for a film, and that it will require a whole nest of creative ,minds and to give ONE man the head lining of the title just because he wrote the films summary as a poem and put in some creative input not only mocks everyone involved like they did shit for the film.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold BTW, I am a university student, so I do get advice. But I don't hear you complaining about other films. I don't hear you complaining about how George Lucas gets all the credit for Star Wars, how Stephen Spielberg gets all the credit for Jurassic Park, and so on. People don't want to say all the people that work in a movie. That takes forever. That's why credits are so long. That's why they give all the credit to one person. Lastly, the poem still made the film possible.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Did SpielBerg, Lucas, Woody Allen, Camereon, Nolan, or Jackson intentionally put their names above the title...no. They are credited by others who say Lucas's Star Wars or Camereons Avatar but they don't have the jerkiness to put their name above the title like they wrote the fucker in a published novel. Because they didn't thats why they didn't but Burton did and that is why he is a jerk and a hack because he has no respect for the creative team that helped him with it.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold That's not true. How do you know? Have you ever met Tim? I had a friend who did, and he was very respectful. If he is such a jerk, then why are people willing to work with him again? Because he is so fun to work with. He's very friendly towards his cast and crew. Why does it matter to you so much that it was a poem and it wasn't published? It's still his story, his characters, his movie. He was the one who wanted the movie made and worked very hard to make it happen.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Still harping about the poem? He didn't direct, he didn't do the script, he didn't do the music he helped yet he gets accredited to the whole fucking thing. No one EVER producer or directed got that honor of having the name officially being placed before the title, that is reserved for people who did basically EVERYTHING by themselves. Even then they are humble enough not to do so, yet he spat in everyones faces and said FUCK YOU BITCHES MY NAME GOES HERE BECAUSE I AM GOD!
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Oh yeah, because every director does the music for his/her own film. And that's not true. There are a few movies that had the director's name on the title. If you see the cover of Clockwork Orange, it actually says: Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. He didn't even write that book and he still got his name in the title. Lastly, Tim Burton didn't put his name on the title. The crew did because they felt he earned it!
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Kuebrick is a jerk too, he took all the fucking fame on a movie that was novel before and place his name on top because he was the director, I mean there is a thing called giving credit when credit is due. They didn't give everyone the same credit, apprently the first name poping up in the credit roll wasn't good enough they needed their names ontop of the title on the films cover and posters. What the fuck? Wher eis th humility?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@fanime1 And no they didn't he wanted it up there.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Sure Stanley was a jerk, but Tim Burton isn't. I know people enjoy working with him. Anyway, Tim Burton didn't care whether or not his name was on the title. That was added to show that it was his story. He's not taking credit for everything, but he did work hard on it. He was going to direct it himself, but he had to direct Batman Returns, so he asked his friend to direct it. Henry put his name on the title, not Burton.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 *Breahtes in*...."sigh" he wanted his name up there, because he thought he deserved it. That in the film world is reserved for independent films or student films because it shows that they did it most by themselves and that they own it basically. In this context it supposed to show they added something to the same caliber to the piece. Burton wrote the summary, he was a creative consultant, and a producer... does he deserve that honor no, because others helped too in those areas.
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold Every movie has help. It's hard to make a film yourself. Anyway, he does deserve it because it wasn't Disney who wanted this film made. Heck, Disney didn't even say it was theirs until it became popular. It was Tim Burton who wanted it made. He loved the story he wrote and wanted to make it into a film. So, he got people together to make it, since he had to do Batman 2.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Are you even understanding my point, let me repeat so it clarifies in the film world having your name in front of the title means you did all the creative in put to create the output. Because he did three thongs doesn't excuse him making it his "crowing acheivement" understand?
mrfivegold 4 months ago
@mrfivegold I understand, but I completely disagree with you. He DOES deserve it! You have no idea how much of his heart and soul he put into this project. It was low-budget, difficult, and took three years, and it turned out great anyway because he cared so much about it.
fanime1 4 months ago
@fanime1 Tim Burton didn't direct the movie. Henry Selick did. Tim Burton is just the producer. He actually didn't do a whole lot in the making of the movie. In fact anytime he visited the set where they were shooting he would actually set them back a couple of months because he would accidentally destroy a piece or he would bump into one of the characters. That's probably why it took three years. The reason why it's Tim Burton's Nightmare is because he wrote the poem it was based on. That's it.
hahaha4556 4 months ago
@hahaha4556 I never said he directed it. I am a huge fan of both this movie and Tim Burton, so I know that already. It didn't take three years to make because Tim Burton bumped into the set. Three years is the average time it would take to make any animated film at the time. How long did you think it usually took?
fanime1 4 months ago

KennyMCondon 4 months ago
@fanime1 And as for directing it... still doesn't excuse him for having his name up there, direction or no its to show you did it all by youself from script to summary, to music composition and direction.

@mrfivegold What director does the music for their film? Film and music are two different mediums! I never heard of a director who did the music for the film. And no, using garage band or a similar program or using non-copyrighted music does NOT count.
