It wasn't a race on who would buy what type of convertible top system more. It was a literal side by side race on how fast you can drop the top on a NA miata, and an NC. Course he was missing some steps on the NA, but if you have the top and cage from an NB you can drop that in and have a properly folding glass convertible top with no zippers or any of that other crap. Oh yeah, and a defroster =]
now a race to see which MXX-5 gets its radio stolen first!! My guess is the rag top will win that one too with a nice slice in the top LMAO!! Also lets do an Automated car wash race, and see which dive needs his wet diaper changed first, again NA MX5 for the win!! Doesn't matter though, the original MX5 is still a better Roadster. The NC is just a better "car" ;)
Drop the top correctly and the PRHT wins every time. Unlatch the header on the NA, unzip the window, then drop the top. Then get out of the car, close the latches and put the boot or tonneau on. Not unzipping the rear window is lazy and will end up either scratching, wrinkling or breaking the back window eventually.
Not a fair example... When the hardtop is finished going down it's booted... How come the the NA driver doesn't get out and put on the boot... Same goes in reverse... I'd like to see the ragtop driver get out and unsnap and remove the boot then put up the top... The real winner by a couple of minutes is the power hardtop...
I had a thought, if someone were to make a faster version (like Brabus does to Mercedes) they could use the cover thing (little doobles that covers the bit the roof goes into) as a spoiler.
brutoe. Thanks for your response. As I am only 5'-6 in height, this may be a contributing factor as regards my difficulty in lifting the hood whilst seated. To complete this action, it is neccessary for me to turn round and raise myself out the seat. However, hood removal and replacement whilst seated in my MX5, is no longer a problem, I just simply get my wife to step out of the car to do the neccessary.
The guy in the older MX5 is obviously on steroids. I have a 1999 model and believe me, I cannot replicate his actions, particularly when replacing the hood.I have found that this is impossible to do, when I am seated in the car.I assume that the driver has exceptionally long arms!
@terryirv It's not that hard, in fact he makes it harder than it has to be. I just reach back without turning around, grab the handle, and lift the top. Can be done at speeds up to about 30 mph. I have a glass window top, with no zipper. I'm not on steroids, 5'-10" 220.
I was told that the correct opening method on the mk1 was release the clips to take the tension in the roof, unzip the plastic rear screen and lay flat then lower the hood. The reason ? rear screens crack in lower temperatures as they go brittle as a mate's wife found out :( So if below 10c leave the screen in the sun to warm up or heater on, following this method I have never had a problem in the winter. So lets see it again at -5c !!!! besides shouldn't it be soft top v soft top ?
now make it a fair race dickheads, soft top vs soft top. or that elec. hard top vs a conventional hardtop. and measure the amount of effort used which i'm pretty sure was mazda's idea behind the elec. hardtop. all you have to do is push a button which will be a big seller to the people who can afford a brand new miata. fuck i wish more cunts were realistic.
I ll take the new one, the Miatas have really improved over time. And the 06 to 09 one has the most headroom inside and is the best looking. Soft top is best and has more headroom....
Of course the guy in the older car will soon have to replace his rear window as it will quickly split...you can see it creasing up as he folds it. And as Mazda no longer have replacements for his VR Ltd's green vinyl roof, he'll have to buy a boring old black one.
Be kind to your vinyl window...unzip it and let the new models take the chequered flag.
Ok, get your point, but I have cricked my neck & shoulder several times putting the top up on mine without getting out! Also the catches on my mk2 don't quite align without a well practiced nudge.

The NA looks better too. :P

You didn't put the tonneau cover on your NA you cheater. You should try going up against an NC soft top. Only one latch and no tonneau.

@artpiramerd2000 5 seconds is a long time to keep traffic waiting behind you, at a stop light in the rain during rush hour. ;)

That's not how you lower a Mk1 roof properly though. Firstly you should unzip the rear plastic window, and then you lower the hood not let it fall.
