Does Cone (no, not look infected :D ) have myspace or facebook ? and do you think he would answer me, if i asked him, what tempo is screaming bloody murder ? or can someone tell me ? :D i play with metronom mostly and don't know what tempo is it.
@VexorxStudios True, but the song is actually called "Sick of Everyone". The track-list that was leaked is wrong, it had mostly working titles and "Sick of It All" is just a plain mistake probably due to translation from another language. The song was always called "Sick of Everyone" because that title was displayed on a computer screen in one of the earliest update videos.
So there's cone bobbing his head, and proud of the work he just did. Then the guitarist comes in and he's like "i don't like it". So, Cone is obviously hurt by this comment, and he sniffles ot hide it.
Good Point. I think they all should have they're own input, even though deryck does write the songs, and is producer, Cone Should have his say on the bass. Either way the record is going to sound Amazing! Deryck is good at what he does, and so is the rest of the band!
Well, I may be a little biased because I am a bass player, but even though I liker their music, the sum 41 has really boring one note basslines, and I know cone is technically beyond that. When I write a song, I don't tell teh guitarist exactly what to do. He creates his own part. Likewise, when he writes a song, he let's me do my own basslines, not just one note bullcrap.
quoted from an interview with cone: I have been working with our producer Gil Norton on bass stuff and also working on bass stuff at home. There's some cool stuff. Gil is also a bass player so its been a good experience. Some stuff I play on this album is very basic and some stuff goes off a little bit. The main focus was just to help the song and serve the song and not do crazy bass parts just to serve my ego. Thats big enough already!
it doesn't matter. I play one note basslines a lot and its fun cause its easy and I can jump around and stuff. The point is, I have not heard one interesting bassline in a sum 41 song (up until the one they showcased in a recent video). Sometimes I'm playing 1 noters with an interesting fill every now and then, and some songs feature the bass (just as some feature the drums, and most feature the guitar, but that comes with the rock n rock package"
I know, but its getting old hearing one note basslines all through. Its really unfair. In rock, all songs feature guitar, that's a given, but derek also has songs that feature drums, but never bass. I'm glad derek wrote whatever song cone was playing in that other video.
then you obviously need to listen again, because there are a lot of interesting bass lines in sum41 songs. sorry, but this just made you sound like a complete idiot who doesnt know what hes talking about. have you even listened through one sum41 album entirely?
No, music is not my career, I don't have to sit down and listen to a whole album at once. Okay, I'll give you "Chuck". That album was more metal, and Cone had a FEW good moments. If you can name some songs I should hear, tell me.
im not telling you what you should hear. i just think you have to listen to their albums more closely before make such a strong statement. in studio pop/rock productions the bass is intentionally mixed to the background so that you dont really notice it except for breaks or bridges without vocals or parts where it just takes over the listeners attention (solos, interludes, etc.).
there are many songs with cool bass parts on AKNF and DTLI, not only chuck. it just has to make sense in the song.
No I understand that the bass is more of a background instrument. Sure, I'm not gonna have the chicks all over me when I say "I'm a bass player, babe" I don't care, I like playing, and it adds something to the song you can't put your finger one. (sorry for that rant) But 85% of the time, the bassline is boring.
you will have enough babes, believe me. bass players always get the cute shy ones!
i play drums and some guitar and piano and you can see their eyes shine with interest as soon as they find out youre a musician.. or have a lot of money ;)
I've been playing piano a while now, but that won't get me any chicks! I mostly play classical piano, but I do write some rock songs that have keyboard parts. But in the world of rock, teh guitarists get all teh glory. That's okay.
@ptido here in the east coast of the US, we have a motto too. "Hurry up you fat shit, I'm late!" Yeah, these are rude people, but they're my rude people :)
Thats Very true. But I got one question, I'm getting into this whole writting and producing thing too. I wanna know, how to you get it to flow? Sound fluent? Like i don't know what i'm getting at, i only know bass by tabs. Mainly my guitar come into play. Can i listen to some of you're stuff?
That's tough for me to answer man. I guess don't take your fingers off the bass when you're playing. Sorry man, I'd like to post some of our basslines, but my band mates would kill me. Even though we're not famous or nothin, we took a vow not to share any material till the first album is done. We're weird guys...
what was awkward about that? they were talking about sound/strings and if you listen closely they actually agree more than they disagree. cone isnt proud or hurt there, they were testing and he says "we need some new strings though". the album is almost completely written and preproduced and if you look at the other updates he has some crazy stuff in there that he can definately be proud of.
I think it was all about the sound, not really an argument.
they're making an album so naturally they are gunna try to get the best sound possible. the playing itself is spot on, it was only the actually sound they were trying to make better. thats why they changed strings and moved the mic closer, instead of getting a new bassist :P cone's great :)
well..this is your opinion. For me UH is a good album, and it has so many nice songs...but it´s a poor album if you think Sum 41 made it.....if you compare chuck with uh, this album was a joke....I play in a band, and I can do an UH....but do a Chuck? Is sooooo difficult. Even impossible.
yeah...we both have diffrent opinions...but there's nothing to argue about here...still both love Sum 41... ;) I wanna aggressive album too...cause when I liste to songs like Billy Spleen something slowly coming to my mind...and it's fuck,Deryck has a really perfect voice on this kind of music...It sounds amazing

Machine Gun (beginning), Heart Attack, Over My Head, All Messed Up, Crazy Amanda Bunkface, In Too Deep, Fat Lip, Underclass Hero (chorus).
I'd say that AKNF is the best album for bassline. Underclass Hero's the worst.
But as schlafanzyk said, it's very hard to hear it correctly, you've to listen carefuly and with a good audio quality.
