Thanks for the video love, certainly made it simple enough for a man to cook (and I am!!) although you sound disinterested, almost as if someone were forcing you to make this vid !!
@verticalmatt I was only here because I need to sneak some protein down the throats of my nieces/nephews, because they have a vegenazi mother. But I'm glad I learned another path to protein, and how to cook tasty food, which is a gift to mankind.
@Jaybeefromhiscastle amen to that, and lol at your sister (in law). I just cooked the dish but used the reddish water of the lentils to cook the rice, risotto style, adding it little by little so all the flavor and nutritiousness remains in the side dish. and sneaked finely chopped kale into the legumes. yummy!
Luvng it :) I am writing it as i am eatng it!!! But the total recipe along with cutting took me just 20mins!! I soaked the dal overnite thou' probably that hellped me cook the dal faster!!
Thank you for the recipe. I have a question - my boyfriend is Bengali, his mom makes the same dal, but also adds tomatoes. Is that another way to make masoor dal?
blend (puree) the the daal with a hand blender or a whisk just before adding the fried masala mix, it'll taste way better. I also put coriander and pepper powder in mine. you can also add diced tomato or green mango for different flavour.
Lol..yea it's crazy some Indians smell like onions..really bad..According to Ayurveda onions and garlic disturb brain functions. I have noticed after I stopped eating garlic and onions on the benefits of not using these toxins. I suggest people try it for 6 months they will see an immense benefit.
@TheVedicStudent I remember a chef from the Hare Krishnas wrote this, as well. Ever since I read that, I've largely stopped eating garlic and onions. Garlic I miss, because I used to love that, but onions I don't at all.
So you see the difference, you feel much better not eating these nonsense things. People are ignorant, when we try to help them they think we are trying to tell them what to do. Same thing applies to eating meat and other nonsense like eggs, mushrooms etc. These things have a huge impact on our consciousness. People are ignorant/stupid, they come up with many nonsense excuses.. well how am I going to get protein, these people have no intelligence. Thanks for comment.
wow!1 eaxactly what i needed....m a bengali too.m married to my hubby last 1 year back...wana try out some bengali dishes for him...this dal turned out reallly awsome....but i would love to watch more of ur recipes/....can u post some of the vegeterian dishesas well?....like aloo dum gravy..cauliflower curry...n anything...that u make for your famiily....the homestyle recipies i mean:-)...thanx a load....
Thank you for your nice comments :-). Hing or asafoetida is used by many people as a substitute for onion and/or garlic. So, please, go ahead and give it a try and let us know how it did for you.
@asinha071 Honestly it was the absolute best recipe I have followed for masoor dal. I only used 1 cup of lentils so I made minor changes like 1/8 tsp hing, 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds, 1 tsp cumin, and added 1/2 tsp amchur at the end. Everyone liked it., but I loved it! It will be a staple recipe in my home now. Do you have a recipe for mulligatawny?
@asinha071 I can't wait! I've been "studying" and experimenting with Indian cooking since 2007. It's the best food in the world! I'm so glad my husband hasn't gotten tired of it (3-5 days a week). We eat primarily a gluten free, vegan diet if you have any gluten free bread recipes to share we'd greatly appreciate it :) Thanks again for such a wonderful recipe. I can't wait for the mulligatawny recipe!
you need to learn and practice cutting onion

Nice recipe, but make sure you've got a glass of water next to you while you eat this; it's probably hot enough to wake the dead. ;)

Wait you put the whole garlic bunch in, all the cloves? That's a lot of garlic.

I like the way you have tiles in your cooking area... Granites are nice but this is a cheaper option... Neat recipe too :)

I'm making this right now, I can tell by your ingredients that this is the recipe I've been searching months for- thanks for sharing :)
Do you think hing would blend nicely with the other spices to replace onion?
