There's a similar thing with sheep, in that fluffy white sheep wool is a result of inbreeding, and apparantly doesn't occur naturally with other goat species. But we keep doing it because the wool provides benefits.....really really itchy benefits.

If wool is itchy it's only because of the processing to remove the lanolin, and the colour, so it can be dyed. I have a winter hat that is made from natural untreated wool and it's almost as soft as cotton.
