  • Thanks for all the great musicianship!!! Give your banjoist more solos please.

Wonderful tempo and feel. Like the 1920's two -beat feel. Thanks, I'm at

wwwpeterbanjocom Keep up your great music, Peter

  • what a great band. i being a 16 year old had an chance to play in a annual band reunion with my grandfather. they needed a tuba, (there are only 5 left of about 30 members) and i got a chance to play with them. if anyone gets a chance to play/watch an old band like this, take it. Uptown Lowdown should come to Portland Oregon sometime!

  • @brentsummers1

Uptown Lowdown was in Portland just a few months ago, at the Milwaukie Elks Club for the Rose City Jazz Society.

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ive played this song in a group like this lol but there was no bass so i played bari

  • Wow!! The more i did into YouTube, the wonderfull jazz I find

  • Congratulation from Hungary! It is a fantastic band!!!

We have ours as well, search for Benko Dixieland Band and Hot Jazz Band!

  • Thank you so much for this ,

My grandaughter plays clarinet and Sax ,

loves soprano sax and was blown away with this.

    inspiration indeed.

  • Glad you enjoyed it! I love this band and have done many videos of them that are in my collection here on YouTube. If you search YouTube for "uptown lowdown jazz band," you'll be surprised to see how many there are.

    Thanks for your nice comment.

    RagJazzMonkey Tom

  • I have Quite a number saved and play them often, out of interest do you record the sound on board with your video camera ,run a separate mic., or lift from a live mix on a mixing desk.

    Appreciate your response

    Kind regards

    Ian

  • Since October 2006 when I started recording videos to post on YouTube I have used 3 different cameras. the two best ones are Panasonics that record in Dolby Stereo. I like the KISS method.

My origianal Panasonic was a DV Minitape machine that has since died on me and now I'm using a Panasonic SDR-H40P/PC, and I like it lots better than my old one. Better video quality and excellent sound reproduction.

  • Brilliant Thanks,

any chance of the band visiting the UK.

I'll have to look at buying some of the CD's I think.

Very much appreciate talking to you keep up the good work, so often brilliant bands like this are never recognised. Next time you see them please pass on my thanks and comments

    Regards

    Ian

  • The chances that this band might make it to the UK? Hard to say, but I would guess that it is not likely to happen. They pretty much limit their performances to the western parts of the USA.

  • There are plenty of CD's available and the band's website is listed with each of the videos I've posted.

I sent you a "friend" request. AS a "friend," I have all my videos set so that video comment "approval" is not required.

    Thanks again for watching!

    RagJazzMonkey Tom

  • I just love the two bass saxes countering each other. As I was watching I thought the only thing cooler would be for someone with a contrabass sax to walk in and join them. lol

  • That would be cool, but there are not very many of them in use these days!

  • That is true. Thanks to YouTube I finally saw one being played.

  • Oh, yeah, two bass saxes doing a chase chorus. incredible! I'm gonna be playing this video a bunch of times.

  • hey mr.Jacobus no solo but thats a kewl trombone part you have sounds like a kazue haha this is kewl. You jazzz band guitar player -noel

  • Tom, I know I am always raving about ULJB but I just wanted to thank you for the excellent video and sound work you do. It is superb and lets us out here in watcher-land really ENJOY!

  • Thanks for watching and for your nice comments. I got a kick out of your music preferences - -"All except acid rock and unintelligible jazz."

We are pretty much on the same page!

    ha ha

  • ... and every low-reed geek in the universe turns green with envy...

  • original...fantastique..bravo!!

  • Thanks for your nice comment and for watching.

  • That's fantastic. I'd give my left nut to be in a working dixieland group. I wanted to play my bass sax in the local community jazz big band, but the instructor is being a d**k about it. More like a lazy sack that doesn't want to help write/transpose parts for me. So I'll have to wait to find a group that would appreciate my horn.

  • Thanks for viewing and for your comments. I hop you find a gig to blow your bass sax at!

    RagJazzMonkey

  • Tell him to just break out the 60's/70's Stan Kenton charts. They're written for a sax section of one alto, two tenors, and either two baritones or bari and bass. If they're written for two baris, tell him transposing is your problem, not his.

  • Thanks to Bert and the band for their devoted and scrupulous attention to the music and the musicianship over all these years. Nobody ever had a better book than Bert. Nobody has been a wittier leader than Bert (Well....Alan Frederickson might have been competitive...). So thanks, Bert and Rose, for making many days of our lives sunnier and sweeter.

  • I second your great comment! They have provided countless thousands of folks with musical delights par excellence!

    See ya in Kalispell!

  • GREAT!!! Fabulous!!!

  • Thanks for your comment and for watching!

    RagJazzMonkey

  • Wow! This was great. Dueling Basses. Love to see AND HEAR them in concert. WOW!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Shades of Bix!Excellent rendition!

  • Tounging on the saxophone is simple. The tongue taps lightly on the reed at each note change. This interupts the reed vibration and gives the note a clean start and end. Sax players don't think about it, it just happens.

  • Thanks for reposting this comment!

I suspect that your comment is way more accurate than the one I posted below using the asparagus method!

    Tom

  • can anyone explain how this type of tounging is done on the saxphone? It doesn't sound like the "tu ka tu ka" technique

  • Great question. I have been told that the only way they can perform this kind of tongue technique is to hold a small piece of asparagus behind their lower lip while they are playing. The only problem with this is that it only works for male saxophonists, not females. If you want to inquire more about this subject, I would suggest you sit in an automobile junk yard for a week or two and wait for an enlightened flash of knowledge to pop in to your conciousness.

    Good luck,

    RagJazzMonkey

  • The bass saxists on the left of the screen is not the same person as in some of the other videos

  • The fellow with the white beard is Paul Woltz. In a few of the other videos of Uptown Lowdown, Jim Buchman was sitting in Paul's chair because Paul was unavailable for the particular gig. These guys are all fantastic reed specialists!

    Thanks for viewing!

    RagJazzMonkey

  • Wonderful! The best bass sax Performance I've heard in years. Maybe the best ever.

    Thanks so much.

  • Thanks! Now, go listen to these folks play Canal Street Blues which is another video I captured in Prosser, Washington. It is sooo Delicious also!

    Thanks for your kind words!

    RagJazzMonkey

    Tom Warner

  • Jeepers. I'm total awe.

  • John Goodrich, you drive me crazy!!!

Another hell of a soprano chorus!!!

  • Oh, boy! You know it!

That banjo man is also doing a hell of a great job while John gets his big artillery ready for battle.

  • Smokin!

  • Flames leaping out the windows!

  • Everything is great about this band but I especially enjoyed the bass sax work. If anyone is interested I have a couple of bass saxophones for sale as well as hardcases for BBb bass sax. I can send you pics and info leebm29 at yahoo dot com

  • Thanks for your comment.

You ought to put them up for sale on eBay!

    I hope someone sees your

note here and makes an offer!

    RagJazzMonkey

    Tom Warner

  • Wow, great band! And very good chorus on soprano. (is that Paul on soprano?) Love the Bass Saxes, both Great Players! Thanks! Aad Overeem

  • John Goodrich is the Soprano Sax player at the beginning of this video.

Yes, this band is the tops!

Thanks for watching and for you comment.

    RagJazzMonkey,

    Tom Warner

  • Thanks for the info Tom! I'm a Reed instruments player myself, Clarinets and Saxes from Soprano to Bass. Play a 1921 Buescher Bass and love it! Do you know what Basses John and Paul play? Aad Overeem

  • I don't know what they are, but you might find more info about them on their website. I put a link to it up in the write up (About This Video).

    Toodles,

    Tom

  • And I LOVE!!!! the bass-sax duels!!

  • Howdy Kiddman32!

Yup, that pair of Bass Saxs does the trick and Berts cornet work is always delicious. This band wins First Prize.

    Thanks for your nice comments.
