I kinda wish I had males. I like how large they are and how they are content to just chill on your lap with you. My girl rats are almost always on the move. Any moments where they lie still are rare.
One of my boys did this for the first time today :) He'd climbed down my top and fallen asleep and when I heard a weird noise I looked down and he was doing this. I was very happy :)
careful when you take them outside, i've heard horror stories of people getting their rats snatched right out of their hands by a large bird like a hawk.
my rat is very sick for some reason so i am feeding him cheese strawberries bananas and milk and he looks very miserable but he still makes that clicking noise with his teeth i thnk thats called bruxing? idk but im really scared for him he might die =(
This may be too late, but did you take him to the vets? Because if you're not sure if your darling is ill or not, then you may need to refer him to a vet =(
at 21-22 he does like a little twitch does that mean anything? very calm and adorable rat i just got mine and shes very antsy and stressed its been 2 days
@ArachnidFanatic Yeah let them get used to their new surroundings, try not to take them out too much during the first week or two. When they are obviously not nervous oh your presence, close off the area and open the cage door. Wait for them to get curious and inspect you. Be patient, don't rush it. When she finally makes her way out of the cage, give her a treat to gain some trust (my rats love fresh fruit. Try blueberries) Does she have a companion? It's highly recommended you buy 2 at a time.
Females are much more hypteractive than males. She will calm down with handling but expect her to be hyper for the rest of her life. Rats are great pets reguardless of the sex and some females will calm down a lot. Make sure to give her rewards for allowing you to handle her. Yogurt is a great one as they can't grab it and take off to eat.
get more than one. at least 2, preferably more. they are very social and are more fun the more you have ^.^ i only have 4 right now but once i get a bigger cage i plan on filling it up to the brim with more rats XD
Bruxing is when the rat grinds his teeth together to ware them down and boggling is when he uses a lot of force to grind and because those muscles ae connected behind his eyes it makes his eyes pop in and out, like this rat. BTW that rat is ADORABLE!
Bruxing is when they gnash their teeth together, and boggling is when they change the gnashing motion somehow so their eyes pop out and vibrate. It means they are super happy. Freaky but awesome.
one of my rats has a tumor and is very skinny and sick, it came out of nowhere but i put him in my room on a towel and pet him and he was boggling...so sweet.
So Sorry To Continue This Spam! But I'm Scared of Clowns. )= two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue. The clown statue is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this to 10 videos today, the clown will be in your bed at 3 am with a chainsaw in his hand
So sweet. I am getting my first rats this weekend. They are rescues who have been hand raised. I hope these new boys are as cuddly as this little guy.
i have some questions, i have had my 2 boy ratties for about 3 or 4 months they wont walk into my hands like i see other ratties do, i can pet them and stuff i got them from petsmart and maybe thats why but i dunno i want them to trust me because i love them and they let me pet them i just want them to climb right up on me when i open the cage door like i see other ratties do, if any one can help me please message me i would really like to hear ur opinions =]
Try and feed them food from your hand, like carrots, peanutbutter, lettuce. I got mine from petco and I fed him carrots. Now hes the best friend anyone could ever have! :) If you want you can check out my videos of him :P good luck I hope that helps. If not message me and ill try and help more.
@bloodiedkitten omg he is absolutely adorable! i have two girls of my own who are dumbo "hooded and bareback". i've heard that they are quite rare! your very lucky to have gotten him as a feeder!
@maxa60 It would be nice if I could have a pet rat that could live as long as humans do. Not only these rats are smart, they can be extremely loyal towards their owners. They're pretty much the bite sized version of dogs, except they don't bark.

First time I saw my rat boggling I freaked out and withdrew, thought his eyes were going to explode or something.

I know this is late, but
When he grinds his teeth he is bruxing, which either indicates extreme happiness or nervousness.
His eyes popping out of his skill is called boggling, which indicates the same.
But in this case, he's just loving the attention :]

So Good...
If ratties had the life spans of cats or dogs they would be popular pets/companions.
maxa60 4 years ago 13
@maxa60 I don't think that would be the case, considering how much negativity the brown rat has as a species.
SlenderTroll 1 year ago
@maxa60 they already are popular pets/companions :-)
