As to knowing better than EVH, I don't claim to know better it's just my opinion that he is wrong about the role of the producer, and exactly which Van Halen album did he produce on his own again??? BTW I stopped listening after 5150. Atomicfile22: Yes I was a pro producer but I'm retired now. I never made it big but I made a good living recording records for independent bands. I am still a pro musician doing my own material. Peace, Love & Ice Creame!
EVH is totally wrong about the producer's job. The producer is the "Big Picture" guy. While the musicians are all in the forest lobbing for their part to be bigger and their instrument to be louder the producer listens and helps the band achieve what their vision is. At least a good producer does that. I always felt that we were all serving the song. Whatever was best for that particular song is what we did. So that's what a producer does. Basically. Ego wrangling is needed too!
I grew up in the 70's and I've seen em' all except Hendrix. The only guitar player I've seen come even CLOSE to Edward's playing was Randy Rhoads. To me, that says a lot.
i like ted too and the 5150 studio is just like any other 16 track studio. i like reverb. reel to reel? i used to repair those damn things. i love an anolog signal over digital signal any day. a "Hi Fi" 4 head VCR tape makes the best audio recordings, better than any CD recordings.
The sound coming out of the 5150 studio is just aweful!! That board has no bottom, the cymbals are constant and overmodulating, The mixes are hollow and tinny! I say, lose some of the reverb, get Roth in front of a nice tube mic, put his vocal front and center in the mix, run every signal thru an old fashioned neve console and onto reel to reel tape and when you mix that shit, make sure Alex' kick drum and Anthony's bass are in the pocket nice and deep and hittin like a slug to the chest!!!
I miss the Ted Templeman produced albums. I personnaly think that Ted was able to pull something special out of Eddie, and/or he mixed the album in a certain way such that Eddie's parts stood out more.
Ed, Ted took those demo tapes VH produced with Gene Simmons and made them sound great. Don't knock Ted. He really gave VH its sound. You've never been able to recapture it either.
it's hey dude.. I'm eddie van halen dude.. I'm would like to thank all of the little people that helped me make my records.. dude.. but I cant because I really did it all myself.. oh f/ck I love you eddie.. thanks ed.. I love me too.. your welcome ed.. can I get you anythin sure.. get me a long island and keep'em coming.. if you notice me choking on my own vomit kindly install the bonham tune down my throat and rotate my limp body 90 degress .. drain and repeat.. thanks dude.
By listening to Eddie, you can tell he is a heavy smoker. But im sure it was those evil "picks" he was chewing on that did it. No way can smoking cause cancer.
5150 has got to be one of the WORST produced albums of the 80s for hard rock. The electronic drums are horrible and the bass is hardly in the mix. Its a shame as there's a few good songs on there - particularly 5150 & Best of Both Worlds. But compared to sound of other Van Halen records it's a total dog turd.
all of u peaple who have the great despute about dave or sammy,im so tired of hearing the same thing over and over.just shut the fuck up.i personally think sammy was better but who the fuck cares about who the singer for VAN HALEN is.Thats because it is van halen.for eddie and alex VAN HALEN.who gives a shit who he plays with.were all lucky we get to here him play thats wat matters.
There's a lot of hate in the comments. There's also some anger from Eddie about Ted. Ted rules, and was the original VH sound. However, 5150 is still a GREAT album, just different. But, I think that's what they needed. Same with DLR. Eat 'Em and Smile also kicks ass, and how could it not with Vai and Sheehan? I was a junior in high school in '86, and owned both cassettes, and still listen to them. After 1988, VH, DLR, nor Sammy did anything very memorable. How quickly things change.
@governorgilf Even Joe Perry talks about Ted that way. He said during the making of Done With Mirrors, Ted would just fall asleep at the console with a glass of carrot juice, not even paying attention to what was going on.
Eat 'em and Smile wasn't poppy at all, still sounded raw like a Van Halen album. Lots of people remember it and still go on about it. The next album he put out (one with Livin in Paradise) was definitely too poppy and the 3rd album very forgetable. But I still choose Dave over Sammy any day of the week.
hmmm really roth made van halen i thought it was the van halen brothers who started out YEARS before roth and how is sammy a roth wannabe they hate each other if he was a wannabe sammy wud kiss daves ass
Everyone says that ole Dave is the better Rock Star, Sammy the better singer. To me Dave is even the better singer. Sammy knows one tone, it's a badass tone but it gets boring. Dave has MUCH more soul. Ah well the debate will always rage on... cheers to both but the album's really got too poppy after 1984 so I stick with my fellow Hoosier, Dave.
@guitquick Ohhhhhh I so disagree with you...DLR can yell and girate his hips, that's all. Sammy can sing and more than one tone, he has a great range, but to each their own. I will ALWAYS love Van Halen better with Sammy Hagar, in fact, I own all Van Halen CD's except the ones with DLR. Eww just the thought of him irritates me.
@guitquick ive seen dave live twice and the guy simply cant sing and why does everyone forget how poppy daves solo stuff was when they are complaining about van halen/hagar?
@Pat9201 I love Dave's voice (live too) and yes his stuff is definitely pop but it is so unique. I like the Van Hagar stuff but it is so bland compared to the old days with Dave.
@guitquick if you compare van halen to van hagar i can buy that but in 1985 we had 4 choices ,like both solo dave and van hagar, like solo dave, like van hagar or niether and i think van hagar blew solo dave away.
man ted shaped eddie's ideas into something badass.i love ed but his pure ideas make you scratch your head sometimes and ted was good at getting to the point.i wish eddie didn't feel this way and took some direction.he's a legend but everyone could use a little direction from time to time.
Eddie come on man Ted made you a Legend!Anyone disagrees just listen vh1 eruption!Ted and Don made Vh1 one bad ass moe foe even tho eds track is one side lol uri 1176 all the way!
Ted didn't care. He got the Dave gig to work on Eat 'Em and Smile and that did just as well as 5150.
I loved both versions of VH. You have to treat them as different chapters as the music will always change markedly when you change vocalists as different as Dave and Sam.
wtf are you on crack, ither fair warning or the first album or 1984 is the best, wow what kinda vh fan are you, your one of those fraeky van hagar fans, freak go fall off a bridge into sharp rocks and bleed to death
Eddie dissed everyone back then, Roth, Templeman etc etc. He had anger issues then & has anger issues now. Get help Eddie, don't let your talent and LIFE go to waste.
I could you not have anger issues. Think about it at this time he was the baddest fuckin guitarist in the world. So with that tile how could you not act like charlie murphy says MAD NIGGERISH......
I remember back then that Ted Templeman was busy with David Lee Roth's album and didn't have time to do 5150 - but then again I think Ted and Eddie butted heads too
