Why are people giving her videos crap when she is teaching beginners about the basics of the sport? Who cares if you know how to paddle out of something, a new person might not. I, for one, think this video is awesome. You can do it like a Bear or a Monkey!
No offense, but generally if you are only tipping by that much you can just paddle out of it, I know from experience. Generally, lowbarace is for going through pillow waves since it helps to keep your boat flat, and a high Is for when you are beyond ninety degrees.
ive only flipped 2 times in my life of kayaking and both times was because someone grabbed ahold of my kayak while they were freaking out. ive been doing it for about 12 years.
@CT2507 i was pulled out by the freakingout person the 1st time. and the 2nd time i had to ditch because they wouldnt let go so i could roll back. i miss spoke last message there was actually a third time in class 5 rapids i made it half way and flipped then dont know what exactly happened after that due to the speed of everything rushing by lol. there is a vid posted on that one.
this is true- ive learnt to roll but ive loads of practice on high braces in pools etc and i havent capsized in about two years, but ive had some very close shaves just caught with a high brace. if you can do a good high brace, you should never need to roll again :)
Thanks for the tips, but I have other sort of concern and that's why I am here. Im n amateur novice kayker and I went kayaking today at Porto da Barra, Salvador, Brazil. I didt it for about an hour with my legs streched on the kayak all the time. As a result, I guess the position caused some pressure keeping the blood from circulating well in that region and I did not realize that. When I got off the kayak I almost fell to the ground cause my legs were completely dormant. How can I avoid that?
Everything looks good except for the head-dropping. I have always been taught to keep your head up, no matter what. Looking at whats ahead is crucial!
@micahgee No, I think the head dropping is for the same reason the head comes up last in a roll: it's so that the movement of the head doesn't counteract what you;re trying to do, which is right the boat. Think of it as a conservation of energy. If you're dropping your head, it gives you the energy in your lower body to flip the boat in the opposite direction. It effectively allows the hip flick to become part of the high (or low) brace rather than just using the paddle. Hope that helps.
On a low brace, keep the elbows above the shaft of the paddle, not behind it. That keeps your shoulder even safer, mimimizes wrist movement, and provides more power if it is needed.
You look such a douche swinging your head around like that. When your on a rapid looking at where your going with your head and flicking your hips will do more good than swinging your head around.
@gardogg65 it really depends on how vigorously you brace but the method the BCU prefer is to really slap the water and not to let the paddle dive and also not to lean back because then you might pop your shoulder. The risk is not particularly high, but why risk it?
I think that there should be equal emphasis on both, learning proper early form in the high brace - especially the hip snap element (which I don't remember hearing anything about in this video) is also important because of it's use in a bow assist rescue.
Actually demonstrating the braces while paddling, rather than merely partially describing (while stationary) the concept and components of the brace, as she does here, would have helped me more. But thanks for posting the video anyway.
Emphasis should really be put on low braces for beginning. High braces are really a last resort before sculling or rolling. Also high braces probably put your shoulders in increased danger than low braces. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
@rep353 it depends how its done.that high brace probably isnt amazing for your shoulders. you should lean forward with elbows tucked on a high brace and brace in front of you so there isnt too much pressure on it. just gotta stay away from reaching right backwards like you see so many people do. thats disslocation territory. TBH I never used low braces at all. you can edge the majority of the time and integrate a forward stroke/brace and edge to carry on without capsizing.
low tends to be used if your not going as much as high, it reacts wuiker but there's less of a margin of use as oppose to high where by the paddle is high so theres more marging before you can no longer use it! Oh and she looks much to scared to brace properly, she barely mves over at all!
Wouldn't say so, she's keeping it simple fro instructional purposes. if you just go straight in witha commited high brace and dunk your head the people watching the vid won't have a clue what you're doing, and learn nothing.
I was merely stating that if shes showing the braces if she was to go over slightly further we might actually see how to do them because as of yet this is pointless. Going and dunking her head would get us to learn as well, i wasnt talking about that far but it would work very easily because we would actually see how it works when its needed.
Nah, because with the same technique you can go alot further.
As I said, she's teacing technique at a beginner level, not advanced. For those of us that can dunk our heads it's more about breaking a confidence barrier than it is simply practicing technique,
yes but some people may not realise that the technique can be used that far or get confused on why the low and high braces are at the same edging point. besides its hard to practice the technique if its not going to work properly. Doing a high brace wrong at that low tip could also result in injury. I see where you are coming from but there are alot of floors on both parts. But yeah i guess your right in the end.

Q. How many kayakers does it take to create a successful instructional video on youtube?
A. About 1000. 1 to shoot the video, and 999 more to criticize their technique.
