There are only 3 possible moves on the square 1: Turning the top, turning the bottom, and flipping the side. So if you're referring to the other ONE possible turn, well the surface area is reduced by about 1/3, but this doesn't make much difference because it's the core which provides the most resistance anyways. The pieces on the top and bottom are quite loose, so "reducing friction" here isn't much of an issue.

Even if I wanted to blow my whole summer on it, there are other Canadian cubers who are already twice as fast as me, who are planning to blow their whole summer on it. It was fun while it lasted, but I don't really feel the same way about being competitive at square 1.

@Lev830 If you can find a square 1 that ISN'T mf8, I would be impressed. I have several mf8s, an original square 1, and an original cube 21, and they all have exactly the same mechanism. mf8 is actually my best one. Your friend probably didn't lube it and loosen it properly.
