  • what are the names from left to right

  • @DrSpoon69 Linda Smith, Alan Davies, Stephen Fry, Sean Lock and Mark Gatiss

  • i love how mr fry tied up that how segment with his wit. he brought the joke back on itself, very hard to do :D

  • female comedians are so unfunny

  • "cats can choke on small bones"

That had me dying. Just the tone in her voice is so airy. Love it.

  • answer-both remind me of Sherlock

  • @tomatoesonstrings well Mycroft is on the panel! XD

  • ᴸᴹᴬᴼ

  • I love this show.

  • a violin case XD

  • you play the violin and you play with pussy... problem solved

  • What do cats and violins have in common?

They both make a horrible sound when you smash them against a wall.

  • is that holly from red dwarf if it is she didnt age well

  • @3styler1 No, it's not Hattie Hayridge, it's Linda Smith, who sadly passed away from cancer a couple of years after this. Happily, Ms Hayridge is still very much with us.

  • @kisbie ohh thats not good didnt realise who shje was

  • Stephen is especially awesome as hes insanely bright, but also hilarious. usually geniuses like him are cocky and don't have a sense of humor

  • "They've got low self esteem I think."

"They allow themselves to be bullied."

    Wonderful stuff.

  • Sat here with a raging cold and a cup of chicken soup, QI is the cure.

  • wow, Stephen Fry went suddenly on a long, informative digression about morphic resonance in blue tits. Goes to show that he is not just reading from a script, but is genuinely knowledgeable about all sorts of trivia, and also extremely articulate.

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS AN ADVERTISEMENT DOING ON THE BBC CHANEL!! I PAY MY TV LICENSE TO THE BBC SO THEY DONT SHOW ADVERTISEMENTS.... BBC SCUM

  • @technoshitor ...because the ad is from youtube not BBC and BBC has no control over it you colossal idiot...

  • @technoshitor i know! i was like wTF!! but then i realised that its youtubes add, and you didint pay google anything, so yeah...

  • I cannot fathom how someone thought up making violin strings by gutting sheep and stretching their intestines.

At least I know why they named it catgut because killing cats was bad luck - stave off the competition.

  • I lov Alan, he's such a child!

  • They both make exactly the same sound when children play with them.

  • Oh my. I wish we could have a show in North America this witty, urbane and funny. We get Three and a Half Men (although that's thankfully over) or, the worst, Little Mosque on the Prairie (in Canada).

  • is it that the sounds they both emit are of equal decibels? :s

  • @coochafudom No, it's the fact that you can set both on fire.

  • @FrisianDude :O lol? xD

  • Cats and violins are both musical instruments. If you have a mallet.

  • @Sakkura1 lol

  • I thought, Cat on a hot tin roof- fiddler on the roof

but that's just the thespian in me

  • a violin case hahaha

  • Hmm... My answer would've been: "Well, cats are commonly said to be 'singing' but actually they're just making 'a lot of noise', and violins are commonly mistaken for producing 'music' while they, too, are actually also only making 'a lot of noise', and thet's their connection.

P.S. That is not my personal opinion, I actually like violin music VERY much, I merely thought it a fun thing to say. (On this note, I still think that cats mosly just make a lot of noise, though.)

  • I have to say, the people making comments here are my kind of people. You do realize though that he could have had the punchline all along and was just waiting to use it...

  • I have to say, the people making comments here are my kind of people.

  • Oh dear. Stephen believes in morphic resonance. And here I was thinking he was a proper critical thinker.

  • @lytrigian he didn't say it was true, just that it was a theory that was proposed

  • @porgy29 "Theory" is as good as it gets in science. Gravitation is a "theory". Relativity is a "theory". More, he cited it as if it explained a known phenomenon -- but this phenomenon has not actually been shown to exist. Before you offer an explanation of something, you need to establish that the thing is real. That has not been done. He really should know better.

  • @porgy29 The word you were looking for was "hypothesis". Note the derivation: "hypo" - lesser, "thesis" - proposition. Another word, I suppose, could be "conjecture".

Merging the meanings of "hypothesis" and "theory" is a profound, yet disastrously common mistake people outside of scientific fields make. Theory, as opposed to conjecture or hypothesis, is the best possible explanation of a factual natural phenomenon, i.e. inherently opposite in meaning.

  • If you never learn anything from this show, you are either Stephen Fry or Stephen Hawkin.

  • i learn more from this show than what i have ever learned from school ^^

  • @ValkyrieCain123 I so agree!!!!!!!!

  • I can't believe no one said that the violin is the instrument that most closely resembles the human voice, and cats can sort of mimic the human voice as well.

  • they both squealy if played with incorrectly

  • fuck Bjorn Borg Swedish exports - you're never getting my money.

  • I am very glad to hear that about the sheep-gut. I was always a bit worried about violins. Thank you.

  • they use catskin for a type of string instrument (shamisen) in japan- thought that was the answer

  • They both make an annoying noise if you smash them against a door

  • @lfcizdabest NICE!!!

  • @lfcizdabest LOLOLOL

  • @lfcizdabest LOL

  • That joke was a catastrophe. Pun intended.

  • Why have the BBC got "hot" as a tag for this video?

  • early tennis raquet strings used to made of cat gut.. and in the middle ages the catapult which has nothing to do with cats at all its mechanisn to store the energy for launching was actually bulls penis...

  • What is with the stupid fucking discover Ireland ad?

  • so i didn't actually figure outwhat the answer was to that question, what is the similarity?

  • @mangleface100 The answer was that violin strings can be used in FIDDLES, and that you wouldn't want to FIDDLE with a cats...you know what. Kind of a loose connection if you ask me :P

  • @Bawlztodawalz yeah loose connection to the max. lol. i wouldn't have guessed that in a hundred years

  • @mangleface100 It was just trick question, intended to catch the others out as he knew someone would say catgut:)

  • We could never have a show like this here in the states. The majority of our celebrities are idiots.

  • @ZarabethS179 idiots making more money than you are

  • I totally would have said that they both screech if you rub them the wrong way.

  • I remember reading in an old veterinarian text book from about the 70`s that the barbed penis is not necessary for the female cat to have an orgasm, and it sited the work of a researcher doing her doctoral thesis. I also strongly remember my wonderment that somewhere in the world a woman owes her doctorate to the pleasuring of cats with a smooth glass tube.

  • "cats can choke on small bones"

  • "They started with Tits" Alan's face - lol xD

  • why do cats have viollins and not i in westminister

  • LOL

  • QI: Enlightening the World

  • FUCK OFF, STUPID CAR ADVERT!!!

  • By dogs lol

  • if i had stephans brain i would of taken over the world by now.

  • He is intelligent, but you do realize that he has cards? :P

  • @sozijman And you would have learnt spelling and grammar

  • @TheGravyBoat42

you forgot your full stop at the end of a sentence.

  • Ah but as he once pointed out, anyone really intelligent wouldn't want to run the world... that's why no high intellectuals ever take to politics...

  • stephen's brain must only be used for peace, never for war!!

  • Or for QI.

  • @JackyRowe Oh, dear God, that's a scary thought! If he weren't such a nice man he'd be a fucking weapon of mass destruction!

  • @JackyRowe we'd be doomed ...

  • @JackyRowe :)))))))) true

  • "Cats can choke on small bones!"

    Lmao!

  • @TheFiredrake0146 yeh lol that made me laugh so hard

  • No she isn't. That is Linda Smith! Hattie Hayridge is Holly from Red Dwarf.

  • Is the woman 'holly' from red dwarf?

  • "So you wouldn't want to fiddle with them and that's the connection with the violin"

    Stephen never misses a beat!

  • ROLLING SHEEP 8D

That's incredibly cute, no matter how much of a 'load of old wank' morphic resonance is.

  • he didnt say he believed in it!!! :)

  • Just after he talks about it, Sean, unprompted, reminds him of what the question was.

Its possible that he does go into how much of a 'load of old wank' it is but that part has just been edited out for time reasons.

  • Excellent point hobbys00 - well spotted.

  • poor sheep

  • so what WAS the connection between cats & violins?? :)

  • no connection... it was just to catch out alan

  • The sound!

  • Linda Smith was the BEST.

  • I love this show.
