  • I was the coolest 10 year old - I sooo loved this when it was released.

  • I could so redo this song with my writing capabilities and make it a hit. Well done Ice! U helped me in 82.

  • even though it's 30 years later the beat to this song is still hot.

  • great song..the guitar lick very similar to bowies station 2 station

  • is that a fretless bass? Mick Karn/Japan influence?

  • Icehouse were underated....best Aussie group and Ivor Davies should be given a key to the kingdom

  • dead rin peace 7 incher

  • LURRVE IT

  • Why has nobody done a modern cover of this? A song so far before it's time in mood and production. Classic.

  • @beebeeguy69 - Maybe because its already perfect. That's why it still sounds so great 30 years on.

  • Thanks so much, nzoz, for doing this massive service to Australia and New Zealand by unearthing and displaying our best music, not only to the people who, like me, grew up listening to it on the radio as the soundtrack to our youth, but to an international audience who have never had the opportunity even to hear, let alone see, so many great bands playing rock Down Under style, and making it their own.

  • great song... loved chrissie amphlet in it.... horn up!

  • So smooth and sexy ~ Love this song!!

  • Thought I'd heard all there stuff but I've never heard this one before ☺☺☺

  • @Byootox That's because this was a B side on one of their singles.

  • @baywindowbandit Thanks for that, It explains why I missed it as I have heard most of there stuff but this was a bit of a find for me :-D

  • i hear funky since 0:11 , icehouse still the best 5*****

  • nzoz1981, you are a bloody legend old son, thanks heaps

  • Feck. Haven't heard this for years. Great. Stripper at the funeral! Goodskie.

  • Iva Davies is from Wauchope, NSW (near Taree). Evidence that not all talent comes from the big smoke.

  • @gergatronic , too true. Two at least of Chisel's three Aussie members came from Alice Springs (Mossy) and Ayr, Nth Qld via Grafton NSW (Don Walker). (Jim Barnes and Steve Prestwich were Scottish and English respectively; wikipedia doesn't know where Phil Small, the other Aussie in Chisel, came from, and nor do I :-).

    Anybody?

  • sexy

  • friday nites at the bristol hotel in williamstown circa 1981

  • icehouse....so ya know it's great.....!!!!!

  • if you say sumtin mean it''

  • This is a bit sad - but I am STILL searching for that bass sound from this song - bought the single when the song came out and bass guitar not long after that

    Love it !!!

Thanks so much for the upload I cant find the song anywhere to purchase :(

  • @Bf109D Roland Dimension D - SDD-320 Chorus

  • iva davies...the aussie bowie: haven't heard that one before. kind of works

  • its just cool..... no comparisons needed

just turn it up loud and enjoy

  • groovin away

  • Great Video! a bit like Roxy Music with a subdued Mick Karn from Japan on bass, but that's fine as I really admire those bands too. Great video graphics! all this when animation and video were basically pre-computer. Dang I miss this era...! When the bands had class and looked great and not like people who rolled out of bed in their baggy crap. I think bands are style cowards now. Bands had real style then and cared how they looked and sounded. Now its tatoos and piercings and noise. YUCK !

  • this is awesome, I had it on the UK Love in Motion album, but it wasnt on the Oz Primitive Man? Why? Believe it or not, I heard this on the radio about a month ago!!!!

  • lol nearly broke an ankle getting this and sunnyboys 'alone with you'

from the record shop. fantastic, life-changing sons.

  • reminds me of every thing that was good about the 80s, every thing

  • Music in perfection - you'll never hear this today

  • Was 8 years old when this came out. Still remember it from Countdown. Seem to remember the chart being so much more important/vital back in those days

  • Strong song

  • the aussie Bowie...Iva Davies

  • pure brilliance, weak for this band xx

  • The Aussie 80,s bands were right up there with the rest of the world.

  • I remember this it came out on 1981 OVER THE TOP I still have the album I think!!!!!!

  • Yep I'm tuned into radio NZOZ again awesome track!!

  • I loved this..and the the Flowers record before it.Then Iva Davies went into the 80s and I didn't get it - not that I didn't do my Aussie Crawl mullet, but , this is sweet

  • OMG! This brings back such memories for me. It seems like a lifetime ago when I first heard this. I was in year 9 in high school and fooling around wid the girls. This and other Icehouse songs were big. I will lean back in my chair and reminisce.

  • The version on the 'Masterfile' Album is better in my opinion! Still Iva Davies is a very talented songwriter. Great Southern Land is my N° 1!

  • Great and rare group ! They 'd released number excellent songs. I still remember " hey little girl " from IceHouse ! It's probably the most known song of their by now

  • excellent aussie band

  • aha's one hit take on me was a fantastic song and will always be, but icehouse put out many great songs.

  • fantastic song, fantstic band,i love all their albums!

  • north vs south, norway vs australia, aha vs icehouse

  • no contest... Icehouse had better songs than AHA.

  • and more... hits.

  • @nightcat3549 I Strongly Agree!!

  • @nightcat3549 no way, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beauty!!

  • What a cool number. Still sounds so great in2009.

Iva Davies and Icehouse great Aussie musicians.

    Thanks for the post.

  • I love this version of the song. One of the versions has Chrissie Amphlet singing with I va on back up vocals. I love every version of it. Thanks for posting. Dont you all think that Australia let Icehouse down. They were hoge in the US. But here[Australia] they were under-rated.

  • No way man. Both Icehouse's singles and albums were always bigger in Aus than in the USA. look at their wikipedia discography

  • Why did Iva Davies turn into an intolerable poser? He used to be adorable.

  • Flowers at the Arkaba when I was a young man...

  • Oooohh Stagpole and Mallamoozoo, come on now lets all put our toys back in the pram and relax. Icehouse rocks, they did back then and they still do now. Chill out everyone.

  • Does this remind anyone else of Def Leppard - Rock ON?

  • oh - i had forgotten all about this song!! awesome memories!

  • one of Icehouse's best songs !!

  • you cannot even spell - you dumb boring dickhead

  • cheer up dickhead

no need to get so upset

if you don't like Icehouse - fuck off NOW

  • speak for yourself, others may disagree...like me!

  • This is Such a Great Song!!! 5*s Although Iv'e never heard it before..It's got a Great beat..I Just Love it! Thanks Anita

  • I noticed you added a few of my uploads onto your favourites. Cool! Glad to see you've picked up on the buzz we've been raving about for the past thirty odd years! Bang The Drum's 'Only You' is a surprising favourite as well. I still have the original 7" single. Never knew what became of those guys.

  • Great song 5 stars

  • Iva Davies = Genius, underrated songwriting mega fucking star of all time

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks nzoz1981. Reminds me of that summer!

  • no worries mate

  • cool animated videoclip

  • LOVE this song!

  • Quite a discusting and prejudiced comment you've made there. I'm sure if it had been another race of people, you'd choose your words very carefully.

I know you will not answer to this comment because you made this statement for the sake of effect - which is childish and immature. But I will say this. continue....

  • Find a human thats not a brainless biped, and I'll show you an Australian (most likely).

  • I have since had cause to regret my comment but YouTube has no "erase function" so...

  • Fucking faggot.

  • This would be an amazing song to strip to for a partner...such a sensual sound.

  • You may have a point there... that's something I did not notice at all!

  • Oops, wrong person....

  • lol

  • I stripped to this at my wife`s uncle`s funeral and not a peep from the crowd.

but yes, I agree, in the right setting it`s a potential rootfest.

  • +1

I've had that potential rootfest idea in my head for a long time, all I need to do is to find the right person.

  • WTF??

  • @carntspell best comment i have ever seen on the internet. thankyou for ,making me spit beer all over my boarding house

  • @carntspell WTF?

  • @carntspell look 20 morons agree with bigger moron

  • @carntspell

That is one of the most incredibly hilarious sentences I have ever read. Genius. Tears (of laughter) in my eyes.

  • INXS must have been inspired by this in some way.

  • Mi-Sex, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel and The Sports were bands INXS took a lot of notes from. Both Icehouse and INXS released debut albums in the same year... it's possible, but I do not know to what extent...

  • More in reference to later videos by INXS. The video "what you need". it has a lot of animated artwork much like this video. Really love the bass in this song.

  • Oh I see what you're mean. The animated concept was used in a few Aussie videos during this period. Machinations' 'Pressure Sway' was another video that used much of the same concept.

  • if you like the bass in this listen to - Feed The Enemy by Magazine , think it came out about 79, great bass work by Barry Adamson who toured with them when they came to Oz in ...I think it was September 1980...

  • I will say the Norwegian band "A-ha" (Take On Me) have been inspired by "Icehouse", if you look on A-ha`s break though

take on me, from 1985, and this song from 1981 !

  • You may have a point there... that's something I did not notice at all!

  • WHAT?? Why, coz both clips have a white background and hand-drawn characters? You obviously haven't heard much stuff from either band..

  • An Elvis Costello video clip had the same idea... It was just the style of the times.

  • Train of Thought reminds me of Icehouse a bit and also another Norwegian band around '84 called Berenik I think.

  • I remember this coming out, it was on Radio with Pictures in NZ. Great vid for its time too.

  • iwas born in 81, and i love that particular year for music, mustve listened to it as a youngun.

  • I have been sitting her for hours listening to all the music I loved in the 80s - Flowers, Church, Divinyls, Mentals, AC/DC. Great days and great music - thank you everyone who has posted these. I live in Thailand and this has really saved my sanity!

  • +1

Some bands have been posting their own collection

At last the internet is worth something!!

  • Interesting song. Very special sound from it.

Early use of the Fairlight CVI.

  • Great tune from a great band and performer. I always thought that it sounded a bit like David Essex's "Rock On" from 1973, but there is a bit of Bowie's influence in there, too.

Then there is significant stylistic jump to the "Primitive Man" material, another big change to "Man of Colours", & so on. This is indicative of someone comfortable with a wide range of musical styles, and of someone prepared to stretch their capabilities into different musical areas. And that does describe Iva Davies!

  • this tune reaches in grips me...loooooooove it!

  • This song puts my love in motion.

  • Love the rotoscope animation! Years before "Take On Me".

  • THE BEST BAND OF ALL TIME[ME THINKS SO]

  • iva davies a true GENIUS.another awesome hit...

  • Did they play this in the miniseries Underbelly? I heard it was used in an episode. Oh well, it won't be seen anytime soon.

  • Somebody called Iva Davies UGLY at thr "No Promises" video. So I sent him here: I admit

the haircut was pretty bad. But here he is,

    pretty as you please.

He was a major crush 30 yrs ago!

  • He had a choice looking Mullet in the "Electric Blue" period...

  • He is a good looking man. I like him best in the electric blue video. i prefer him with long hair

  • we all have our own tasres: long hair/short hair whatever. but i think we can all agree that iva and co. were brilliant. and sadly, underrated. i still have all the lps eps and ticket stubs!

  • I was suspicious first cause I loved the rock Flowers thing, but this song has stuck and stuck! That fuzzy keyboards maybe? the chords? I read some crit say it was Bowie to the point of embarrassment. Now its their (his) best IMO. The superglu song!

  • Bowie was THE major influence of the day.

But I don't hear it: Iva Davies was a true original.

  • Yeah, ever since the first time I've heard this song (late 2005 - I wasn't born when this was released) it has stuck to me up until now.

  • Ivor, you groover.

    Thanx for posting this.

  • nice!!!!!!!!!!

  • "boop boop!" Nothing, i mean nothing these days has the feel, the mood, the texture like this....... "boop boop!"

  • you r so right i miss the 8os

  • Wicked track! I'd almost forgotten this. thanx for scratching my memory!

  • Saw these guys a few times, what an incredible era of Aussie music. They even supported David Bowie. Now I'm reminiscing!

    Thanks for sharing this.

  • I prefer the B side "Lust In Motion". Much sexier video.

  • I am enjoying watching these videos of yours. It's good to be able to find them somewhere AND have an 80s flashback / reminisce.

    Thanks!

  • One of the best singles ever released by them - so moody and evocative (though they do have some phenomenal album tracks, especially on their debut album, "Icehouse"). I much prefer this version to the remake featuring Christina Amphlett from "The Divinyls". I guess you just can't beat an original!

  • agreed

  • This was the era for brilliant pop! So hard to capture those evocative moods from much of the oo's 'pop'!

  • Can I have a copy of the video?

  • sexy as song...

  • Hey nzoz, I've been watching all your stuff since yesterday, and it is fantastic.

  • ;) Glad you like it... I'm a long way from finishing this project.

  • wow these guys made real differences in song styles they put out. very creative lot.

  • This one's animation predates Aha's "Take on Me" by several years!!!

  • A classic fro the 1980s,the best era in music!

  • I knew I could rely on you nzoz1981, whoever you are

  • Ha ha, thanx...

  • what a cracker tune from a great ozzie 80's act

  • Yay
