  • i got a counter conditioner, i did what you told me in the videos. On the label it says "dont use on human skin, can cause eyes and skin irritation. Do you think i should still use this conditioner

  • Hello,

So my family has a golden retriever/ St. Barnard mix. We absolutely love him, but the thing is we live at a summer camp and we always have people coming and going. When he is outside and someone drives down and gets out of their car he runs up and starts barking and barking because he is scared and we can't get him to stop. As you can imagine it is a very scary bark! We would love to be able to break him of this bad habit. What method would you recommend?

  • I've wanted to have a Golden Retriever for like 6 months now, and since then I've watched at least a 100 of your videos, I don't even have the dogs yet, but I feel 100% prepared to train them. Seriously, thank you @kikopup , I love you, and my future dogs will thank and love you as well. You're truly the best. :)

  • I would only disagree with your overuse of treats as a form of praise. I find much longer lasting results when using physical affection and praise. This focuses the dog on YOUR relationship, not the dog's relationship with treats.

  • @enderilles Well, what if you did it wrong and used "Operant Conditioning" your dog would be reliant on treats. But what I am using is "Classical Conditioning" which just changes the dogs emotional response, think Pavlovs dog- a dog drools from hearing a bell, a response is created in the dog, the dog cannot help it. The same thing happens when you eat something and then get sick, you don't feel like eating it again- these are classically conditioned responses, not trained behaviors

  • @kikopup By using the highest level reinforcement possible- real meat and your dogs favorite reinforcers, you will create faster stronger neuron connections and save time training your dog. THAT is why I use food. Some dogs dont like being pet and it can actually work against you, as well as its proven that our voices are not the primary reinforcers like food is- primary reinforcers are things like food, water... secondary reinforcers can be added after your dog is starting to like the stimuli

  • @kikopup To add to this, as the owner of a highly-wrought, wonderful but reactive dog, praise, a happy voice, petting, any reward that isn't silent elevates my dog's excitement. Silently dropping a treat while I quietly say "good" has been the vest form of reinforcement for this dog. I, too, used to be treat aversive, but if your dog responds to them, then why not? Also, THANK YOU again for these wonderful videos! I wish I'd seen them when my boy was a pup.

  • @kikopup does this mean that you dont have to ever stop using treats when classically conditioning?i wanna classical condiotion my dog to children and petting and i fear it may take a long time.thxs

  • My dog doesn't bark at objects on a person, my dog barks at people. All people that she doesn't know well. She barks at shadows, she barks at any tiny noise, she barks at other dogs, cats, squirrels, she barks when I leave her outside, she barks when I leave her inside, she barks ALL THE TIME! I don't know what to do.

  • I am getting a maltese in a week or so. It will be eight weeks old. What should I start with? After I have done the basics which things should I move onto to train my puppy?

Your videos are awesome and extremely helpful. Thanks in advance. =)

  • I have a 31/2 yr old labrador . He is very happy as long as i am with him in the house the moment i lock the house n go out even if it is for a short period it starts crying loudly & disturbing the whole neighbourhood how do i stop him from crying.

  • good vid

  • Im getting a puppy soon, when should I train him/her, for this and most of the other things

  • Hey i Have a question My cousin have a pomeranian at her house the dog love to bark when a person walk inside and bark at strangers at her and the dog also whine when the owner leave or not at home? How would i train him?

  • Kikopup, I have been raising my pup with your videos. Thank you so much. We are working on not jumping up when people enter the house. (I need more treats!)

  • Is there a way to stop a dog from guarding the house?... He barks at any dog walking past our house. No matter where he is in the house nor if he was doing something with us..

  • my dog is afraid of a certain race! how can i stop him from randomly barking !!

  • @evelina0cookie: if u are going to teach the dogs to sit, down, or touch make sure to always start off being closer to them and moving the food in ur hand where you want their head to go. Repeat this so the dog can do this even when there is no food in ur hand. ... If they can't do a more challenging twist yet, allllways go a step back.

  • Im going to be dog-sitting 2 yorkies for 2 weeks. What are some tips to taking care of them and the basics? Im 14 but my mom will be home so she will probably help me :) Thanks!

  • My border collie/Aussie mix barks at people and kids in general. She also growls but not in an aggressive way it's more a "I'm afraid and will keep an eye on you" way. It is annoying, she's the sweetest thing to us and people she knows. I know we made her this way partly b/c we don't have kids and don't socialize her as much.

What can I do to correct this behavior?

  • @andysgrl33 My aussie does this too! I find that it I exercise her a lot, she reacts less (sooo tired! too much energy to bark!); or when I keep her on a short leash at the beginning of the walk, she calms down. Her problems are usually when we come straight out of the house. She likes to tell people to "Get off her lawn!"

  • what breed is the dog at the beginning.. because my "puppy" is just like this.

  • My dog dosnt bark at strangers. he always barks at the same personn when she leaves or comes into the house, he also bites, what can I do? Kikopup I really need your help!

  • Scary items!! What should I put a fucking wheelie bin on my head?

  • Could you train Splash to write a book about dog training? I'd buy it.

  • Hi there!

First of all, I think your video's are great!!!!

Second I have a question. This video's shows how to stop barking at strangers because of strange things. But what if a dog is just reacting to strangers in general, how do you clickertrain that!?

My brothers dog created that problem right after being chipped at 12 weeks age. Before that, there was no problem, after that she barked at EVERY stranger. Never to known people who live in the house.

  • They were BRED to be afraid? Not only adding to the huge over population problem we're having, but making Afraid dogs. This makes no sense to me

  • @brittanyXjanel If you think about what she said in that opening line, you'd realize that she meant they were bred to NOTICE unusual things and ALERT their masters. She did not say they were bred to be afraid.

  • but out of home he can bark at strangers only stranger touches me

  • i think thats normal and even good that dog barks at strangers. i even traind to word ''stranger'' to bark and chek the window who is there. if someone who my dog dont know will come to my plase then my dog will realize that barking is not needed but also i dont want that my dog will be friend with her/him

and NEVER can my dog get some dreat from my friend, and even if he has taken it i command that my dog will spit it out again

    srry of my english :D

  • My Tiku barks at people and dogs! Everytime he sees people he barks, it doesn't matter if he knows them or not. I say "no!" and he stops, but starts to bark again right away. He lets people pet him, but before and after they pet him he barks at them, and if they put their face near him he pretends that he is going to bite.

What could I do to stop this behavior?

  • Another informative video! As someone else suggested, I would also love to see a video on how to train your dog to not bark (or to only bark a few times) when people come in the house. Great video though!

  • y wouldn't ur dog be comfortable with you?

  • @JocoseCatastrophe If you rescued a dog and only had it for a short time :) etc

  • my dog is afraid of balls .... he won't look at them

  • OMG, I'm definitely using this one with Bella. She recenty reacted to a lady at "paws in the pool" an event where dogs get to go swim , the lady was wearing a hat, sunglasses, and was carrying a large camera. I know it freaked her out, so I didn't blame her, but I definitely want to fix the problem.

  • @RescueCadetsUSA yeah, :) big cameras, and binoculars are big triggers for dogs :) besides the hats and glasses

  • What breed dog is Bruno? (5:40)

  • @Issa2848 Hes an Afghan Hound :)

  • @kikopup Thanks for replying! I'm a big follower of your page, and I have a question. I recently began pet sitting and I need some kind of background information on dog behavior. I know the basics, but I'd like to know in depth. How can I recognize a dog fight breaking out and how can I stop this behavior?

  • @kikopup I remember that dog from the opening scene of the original animated 101 Dalmations! Very cool.

  • My dog barks only when its in the yard and a car comes, how i should deal with it?

  • thanx 4 the vid. i'd like you to emphasize more on barking at visitors without being afraid of something. i have a dog who's not shy, he just barks and barks whenever someone enters the house, even at us, the family. he just can't be stopped and after he finishes barking he goes on growling for a while. the more you yell at him, the more he growls. if you call him with joy,he comes gladly and finishes barking, but i'd like him not to bark at all, cauze we're having problems with our neighbours.

  • HAHA! Thanks a lot. Just taught leet [deaf Border Collie]the spin after watching this video.

  • Bruno is GORGEOUS!!! (in case you didn't know haha)

  • I was thinking, This is a lot like Pam's videos. I no sooner thought that when you introduced her!! Great video!

  • As always, wonderful training video! I wish more people would do this sort of stuff during the PUPPY SOCIALIZATION PHASE (with the slow intro of new stuff as you describe) so there would be fewer reactive dogs in the first place! :-)

  • Very nice

  • great video, this is very interesting and helpful

  • nice video!! you rock!

  • Fabulous!

  • thanks for this video, I love your barking videos and your videos on training your dog to be calm around things they are not used to. I don't know what I would do without your videos :-)

  • Well, what do i do when my dog is afraid of older people?

I am not kidding, every older people, my grandmother and any other grannies, my dark starts barking. They don't have objects with them around. I cannot make myself "old" to teach my dog lol

  • Think why your dog is reacting. I doubt it's the age. usually old people walk differently than younger people. this strange slow movement could scare your dog. Ask whoever it is that scares the dog to not look touch or talk your dog until he becomes more confident. NEVER punish your dog for barking.

  • Very well done! 5* There's alot of reactive dogs out there, so this will be soo helpful, Emily and Pam! :) The strange movement part was funny, heheh and Bruno is lovely! Again, nice work!!

  • Family guy viewing party at my crib, onlyy single guys are invited : )

  • Interesting! I noticed that a lot of dogs fear umbrellas the moment in which they open. Perhaps it's strange for them to see the sudden change of shape.

  • Excellent advice and something that most people don't think to train. Great idea! What is the name brand of the harness on Splash? It looks really comfortable.

  • Wonderful as always--I'll be desensitizing Kharma to pedestrians when she's in our car.

  • That is such a great idea :)

  • At 1:56 there was a dog passing by and he didn't even care.

If it would of been mine he would've ran the hell out of his mind just so he could make a friend out of this dog's ass.

  • A lot of information and training issues on an important subject. Thanks for this video!

  • and I think I'll try some of this on my horse, too! She can be spooked by the funniest things!

  • Absolutely full of amazing advice! The "funny movements" struck a chord here as that would defnitely set Doc over his "threshold." We always say he doesn't allow dancing as he goes nuts if we move like that. Goofy boy that he is. Thanks as always for awesomamazing training tips!

  • Splash can get very excited by my brother's funny movements. He likes to excite her on purpose... Luckily he's finding it harder and hard to find movements that excite her. Hehe!

  • Really helpful - as I have a dog who gets easily spooked - I've been doing a lot that you recommend and its so good to see it put into practise with further tips.

  • Once again very informative and terrific video! Pipsa used to be very scared of water grids while on walk but with clicking and gradually progressing she now goes to sniff those and tries to get a treat every time :D

  • Kiko didn't like man hole covers. It makes sense, why would a dog walk over something that is hollow when they could walk over a safer area of non hollow ground.

  • Another awesome video.

I have a bulldog and have always made excuses for her because they have a reputation for being stubborn, but after seeing some of your videos I'm sure I could have done a better job with her if I had discovered you earlier. She's nearly three now . Have I left it too late. ? .?

    Carole x x

  • Nope. Its actually very easy to use counter conditioning on a dog of any age granted you have something they find highly reinforcing.

  • WOW! That really turned out nice! Excellent tutorial! Splash was a little more calm around some of that than Bandit, but it was really amazing to work with them both in this way! The other day we were out with the dogs and a homeless man walked by with a jacket, cane, and a huge bag of stuff and Bandit looked as it that guy was his best friend! It really works! Thank you for putting my youtube channel at the end! You are a awesome friend!

    Pam, Isabelle, & Bandit

  • This is very helpful. Also, I am working on a few of Miya's triggers for reactivity, and wonder if there is a way to get her comfortable with people reaching for the top of her head rather than under her chin. Any suggestions?

  • Em, I hope you do not mind if I reply. Bandit doesn't like people touching him on top of the head. When working with Bandit on this I first paired touching his head with food. So, the exact same time that I touched his head he got food. I did this for many days, then I would touch his head first and then give him food. Then I would touch his head and pet it a little then give food. Next I had people that he knows touch his head and I feed him the second they touch.

  • Then progress it to people you know and trust but maybe your dog does not know yet. For me I want Bandit to like it and not just tolerate it like many dogs do. I want him to see a hand over his head and think, whoo hoooo I am getting something good. Hope that helps. Pam

  • Thanks Pam, yes that is very helpful. I want the same, for her to like it and not just be tolerant. thx -Tracy

  • thank you! Pam :)

    T-

Its like the chin rest in the gotcha video, but instead hold your hand over the dogs head instead of under and go through the steps.

  • Great video, once again!

Awesome work, Splash and Bandit :D Really useful video and tips. Going to use these! 5*

    - Nenne, Della and Cherie

  • Good lesson, but I have to laugh at you California people putting scarfs and gloves in the scary category. Where I live it is joggers, skateboards and rollerblades that are scary:)

  • Hahaha! I know I was going to put a note in the video that in San Diego no one ever wears coats or umbrellas!

  • Well done Emily, certainly - 5*s and a fav!

It's cool to see Bandit & Pam in the video too : )

The amount of effort you do on making your videos is commendable! Love all your vids!

  • I have great admiration for you! Unlike others who try exbir their talents. You're always willing to help and teach. Thank you so much for sharing! 5 *

  • awesome vids, very helpful

I might take a dog in a couple of years and definately gonna use a lot of what's been told here!

  • Another awesome video!

  • ive been waiting for this ...

    ^^

  • cool
