My hermit crab would always change shells in the middle of the night... He did that because he was shy... But anyways when I woke up one morning I picked up his old shell and he would be gone I'm like AHHH... Then I saw him walking around in his other pretty shell. He passed away in march of 2009... Imiss him he was cute.
Unlike humans I don't think Hermit crabs care for fashion and certainly dont have an eye for it. He chose to wear a hollowed out soccer ball instead of that flashy green, rhinestone covered attire...lol
On a more serious note; I guess people should get the facts before they say whether the paints are harmful or not. I would think it all depends on what it is painted with and it is hard (Imposible) to tell from a video.... hmm,I dont know? is that latex or acrylic or what?
Im just saying they might of died from the paint if any of it chipped off and if u get any more you should just by a under neath heating pad or a heat lamp

how do you know if they're ready to change? i have a hermit crab and shes like coming out of her shell but i bought her like that . i have different choices of shells but she still wont change. i put her on top of the shell i want her to change in but she still wont change! ive had her for a few months btw. please help :( oh and when theyre in their cage they have sand and they just sit there. they dont move or anything so i move them into something dif so they can walk, is this normal? thanks!
@joker4lifehehe First, the hermit crab will change when it feels like it. Just like people, they have different preferences. Maybe your hermit crab likes having a shell that is to small. But don't force your hermit crab into a new shell.Second, hermit crabs are alot more active at night, so don't worry if they seem inactive, you might just not see then moving. Hope I helped!
Cute hermit crabs :) I have 2 of my own :) By the way, why does he wear those painted shells? Painted shells are very unhealthy for them. I actually don't care much about the appearence of the shell so my 2 hermit crabs wear natural shells, all i'm saying is maybe you should switch to natural if u want your crabbies to be more healthy and happy :)
@shiningstarsrule999 Hi there, you are absolutely correct about the painted shells but they all died due to climate. It was sad, all died, one by one in the winter. The air was too dry and not warm enough. =(

@minyong24 I know this is a super late comment but, it might help in the future.. If you buy a tank heater that settles the warm part.. And if you get these "pillows" that soak up water to keep the air humid.. :T
@minyong24 then try to buy a humidifier. YOu can find them in local pet stores. They are around 50 bucks and work very well. You don't need a sponge in your tank

@minyong24 my mom was trying to get me to purchase painted shells for stitch { my hermie!!! } to change into, but i want stitch to live as long as he can!!!!!!!!!!! i guess toxic was a little too much, but the hermit crab can also EAT the paint, which is probably the MOST harmful!!!! but stitch has and always will have a non ~ painted shell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sad to report - The crabbies have ALL died. Lack of moisture in the cold season and me not misting did it, I think. I feel sooo bad but it was hard getting attached to these things. Being that they're very low profile and really only moving about at night.
