There is no way a stock 4.4 can make 414whp. Stock ones have been known to lay down 315-320. Even with power tuning via vanos and fuel maps, you'd be lucky to gain 20whp. Add headers and you've got maybe another 20 on top of the SW/Vanos.

@E39M62B44 There certainly is Vanos, unless they've deleted it (which can make power gain on its own from the removal of the parasitic drag). Either way, Def agree there is some stroke/bore work done and possibly porting. Maybe even cams.
@tehsheik I have same engine model in my car. Early M62 had no VANOS. Single VANOS came to M62 1998.08 This engine in this video is early M62. Search wiki or smt for differences between M62B44 and M62TUB44 You'll also find they have different throttle body, different intake manifold etc.

Why would ANYONE think a BMW engine does NOT have potential for power? My X5 35D is chipped and its has 610 pound feet simply by chipping it w/ Hamann. THESE 540s are soon to be classics, They are the last of the Home Mechanic workability.

You can get a diffrent differential if you want, i suggest 3.45s, look around for a clutch/flywheel combo you like, and get an M5 rear diff cradle for the extra rigidity Turbo the car yourself... the 24k is with the price of the car, the stock rods handle upwards of 640whp, the pistons and crank are fine to that level as well...
btw... dude with the green 540.. youd have a few more ponies from ending your exhaust mid car after the y. Your engine should handle 30% methanol 70 % 93 octane and would prolly make over 500chp( or 430+whp)

Now looking at arrow rods, je pistons etc. The car ended up making over 815whp after the ethanol inj. which really didnt make a diffrence, im running half methanol half 93 octane. It helped.
It would have been cheaper to do a turbo LS1 or 2 than this. The car? 23,800 after price and the turbo shit.
actually, the M5 vs 540 on handling and braking are damn near the same. literally. ive had an 01 m5, and numerous 540s... rather have the 540, esp for the maintenance. My car is an 01 6spd 540, i have a Garrett 64mm turbo, and stock rotating assembly, i make more than 615whp @ 16psi intercooled. after everything i have 23000 in my 540... where as the M54 cost me 34800 just to buy.
yea but the bmw 540i sport has practically the same brakes, suspension, and 3.15 rear gearing but its a non LSD. And the 540i 6-speed is almost 300 pounds lighter than the M5. so if you gave me a choice i would take the 540i supercharged over the M5 anyday, the 540is would smoke the M5 and you wouldn't have to worry about it being stolen!
they dont exist... cheapest m5s are like 25 now. people always forget there is much more to the m5 than just hp and torque numbers... suspension, brakes, steering. much diff than the 540.
An E39 540i easily hits the lower 20s, so, yeah, I don't see how anyone can get an M5 for 8-12k.
The lowest I've seen is a heavily modified one for 17.5k. I think the modifications, such as the reduced trunk space from the sound system, didn't do anything good for the value of the car.
Heck, I've seen a wrecked M5 on ebay going for 16k. Now, I think that's ridiculous.
You can get an E39 M5 for 8-12k but you would be purchasing it from the UK and paying GBP. Very rare to find one much below £10k usually very high miles. Maybe that is where the confusion is on this post. After currency conversion your probably looking about the same price as the US as USD are usually around double GBP when converting.

@tehsheik This is M62B44 engine, no VANOS to tune. Newer M62TUB44 has single VANOS. Rev limit and rather flat torque curve suggest it's a stroker.

Dude 14k for 525i is way to much.
Get a 530i ,sport is a must .
They are faster and they get the same mpg as 525i.
You should look at overall condition of the vehicle ,so low mileage is more important then year .

Get the 530 for sure, you'll love the handling difference and the direct steering. A chip will take you to 250bhp. Much better car on balance IMHO.

Dinan S3 for 540i. The drivetrain would be upgraded from stock 2.81 to 3.15 differential along with other mods.
