Ibm is not Dell...Alienware! haha I got an 8600 since there are no 8800s sold around here, in MN that I ever saw. I have shopped for some time too, it's odd. They still got some 6200 nVidias, and they put out some more older cards, oddly. The thing that puzzles me is that I bought a Pentium D dualcore for 775 socket and it did not work, I also have an ATI card that seemingly would not let the system boot. I just bought it too, so perplexing!!
You can't fit a Pentium D on this Lenovo model for a very simple reason, the used chipset on this motherboard is a 945G (If I'm correct), which limits your upgrade possibilities.
You might have luck upgrading the CPU to a Intel Pentium 4 HT 640/650/660/662/670/672 models. I have not tried it as of yet, but will give it a try once I get the budget required to acquire those CPU's.
@MetallicBill The 4710 motherboards are showing up on eBay for less then $100. You could consider that IIRC, use Core Duo T2450. I've set the IBM aside, so maybe I'm thinking of the Dell Optiplex SX280, likely, The Acer uses GMA950 tied to the chipset, Centrino. "Duo", it's basically giving some dateline for the switch to P-D and Core Duo, prior to C2D I think, 2006 and 2007 vintage. The uSFF SX280 Dell is single core 775, I would say that's the one that swaps drives, and the Dell GX620 to 4710
@ViD3R Hyper Threading FOR SURE, but it's chipset holds it back, an 8600 card is spec'd to run GTA IV, and you could get DDR400 4GB in there, they tell me 4GB will run Windows XP, but I suspect not, 3GB and a 512 stick probably the best bet, and if you install Windows, have to use max 2GB or you get BSOD
That 8800gt is a Single slot card ?, I have that same Computer and with the PSU connector being where it is ,there's no way I'm getting a 8800gtx in there...I guess I got to go gt240 then...
@mrjamesb56 No I never tried to overclock my Pentium 4 processor... its a 3.0 Ghz processor straight from the factory so that is fast enough for me :)
@CRXspeedshift 3.2 Pentium 4 with Hyper Theading seems to be the max, well, perhaps 3.4Ghz I think I saw on some. BIOS has to be most recent though they date back to 2007 I'd think
Youtube rapes the video quality. I did my earlier videos on an old Dell and I couldn't do anything but mpeg, then you put it on youtube and it looks even worse. Nice build by the way. What games do you play?
@Transam941 I noted more pixallation and you lose clarity in dark images when you are filming detail in low light, so there YT really impacts video compression uploads
You have to look at your motherboard and where all the hookps go, If it is a form factor PC that sits flat like mine, than more than likely it wont fit right in a standup desktop (Ive tried it).
@bronxvirus Well if you have a horizontal form factor like mine and youre wanting to put it into a vertical tower than I'd say no because of the way the motherboard is set up, but you can always try to rig something up with a little jack rigging,
@CRXspeedshift You have to note here, the GX270 and 280 Dells are in the two popular Form Factors as the IBM NetVista and ThinkCentres, Those are the Dell OptiPlex series and they won't match, they do use ribbon cable headers and some other odd connectors, like Dell's affinity for thin pin fans
@bronxvirus The M51 ThinkCentre is nearly proprietary if you ask me, not a conventional ATX, the case is scrunched at the top near the drives for space, with the PSU and drives backed into each other, but more room near the bottom
What is the exact Thermaltake model that you have inside your desktop? I'd like to know if it's possible to fit in a different make PSU (preferably of a better build quality).

@ViD3R I know that, but it will swap HDDrives with the Acer Aspire 4710 series laptops! That's what I did find as a benefit for the M51 IBM

so you changed the power supply to your computer?
bronxvirus 2 years ago
Yeah the 8800gt needs at least a 400 watt power supply, and I just went with the cheapo 420watt Thermaltake, look it up on ebay if youre on a budget
CRXspeedshift 2 years ago
THx! and btw you think i can take out my parts from my computer and put it into a new case? i have a dell optiplex gx 280

Yea mines sits flat like yours but its a atx motherboard not micro
