I've never played before but I'm definitely going to get 4th. My group of friends are very creative and won't be sticking to pre made maps and encounters once we learn the basics.
Whoa! I've gotta get D&D. Although looking at what's in Red Box (which is cheap so I'm getting it) I'm a bit confused. Like WHY THE HECK WOULD YOU GET A PREMADE MAP?! THIS AIN'T NO BOARD GAME!
@Jumbif A pre-made map is merely someone elses map that ended up in marketing.
There just a good place to start if you new to DM'ing.
But by all means if youve got desire and are comfortable with your knowledge and imagination in said subject. Then making your own dungeons is fun in and of its self. Atleast IMO.
Back in the day I used to even make my own manuals for various game theme's.
Wow these are a bunch of 4e idiots. 4th is for people who are not creative, and cant play as a team. 3.x is creative and rewards players to work together. Are you creative and intelligent then 3.x. If you want to play a generic character and have everything be safe and balanced then 4e.
I'm sure there are people out there that think v3 and 3.5 sucked and only like 1st or 2nd edition.
I like 4th better mainly because a) it has WAY more options for building your character (races/classes) and b) skills, feats & spells in 3rd were all the same - you could play a wizard and then sorcerer and if you otherwise made the same choices, they'd play exactly the same.
as for skills, since 'heal' doesn't restore any HP, its usefulness is very limited.
My only experiences with D&D rules so far are video games, and while Baldur's Gate and NWN were awesome computer interpretations of the 2nd and 3.5 edition rules (backed up my many tabletop D&D gamers) they don't have anywhere near the creativity and freedom on the tabletop game, I really need to get some friends together and play this shit! Can anyone tell me the main differences between 3.5 and 4th edition?
In England, while I guess there are those that play DnD in my area, there's nothing local that would encourage or support it, so I've started playing it at home with a few friends. Since I initiated it, I've ended up as DM (A job I kind of enjoy anyway) - But my biggest problem is, no matter how much I try, combat always ends up a numbers game (20 vs AC,.. hit,.. 15 damage) and it's hard to get it descriptive and flavourful. I do it, the PC's do it. I need DM'ing advice, video's / examples argh!
@sariusmonk just add in the odd word when you describe the effects of a roll eg. rather than 'you take 4 damage' say 'he hacks into your shoulder guard with his axe but without enough force to seriously injure you, take 4 hp as the blade nicks your flesh' although don't overdo it as this can be just as tedious as numbers. Maybe try to include more encounters in your adventures that don't rely on combat (RP, exploration, social encounters etc)
You have put together one of the most professional and entertaining dnd commentarys ever. I play pathfinders but started with dnd It will always be my first love and your flat mini's are freaken awsome. I am hear drawing down maps and dungeons right now just because of you.
I type my own adventures. Sure, it's more work, but I think it is much easier to play out if you already know the story in your head. Plus, if there's something you don't like in the story, you can change it.
i just bought some stuff for D&D and so far im thinking this will be a awesome experience. thanks for making these videos iv watched all 3 of them and so far its only boosted my mentality of trying to get into D&D.
@Jim1905 Couldn't agree more. Very few gamers that I know play 4th edition at all. It's nothing but a dumbed down, glorified wargame that was done better way back in the Chainmail days.
@martialartssucks02 go to d&d's website (actually wizards of the coast's website) and they have a search engine for game stores all over that host D&D Encounters every wednesday night. If you can find a store near you that hosts a game you should check it out. If not then get a group of friends together and just make your own rules and play with whatever you have. That's what me and my friends did when none of us could afford the books, we just used a regular d6 and made everything else up.
I really like the vid's (except for the hammering of 4th Ed is so great part). Love me some D&D! I actually prefer GM'ing because I like creating the stories and senarios for the group to enjoy.
I'm a new DM, Iv'e had to learn without previous game experience (short of NWN). Our game is using the 3.5 rule set and the only problem I'm having is knowing when to use what dice?
@AMD2ARC In 3.5, the d20 is used for every single situation except for damage. All other dice are almost exclusively used for determining how much damage is dealt. That isn't an absolute rule, but it's a general rule of thumb that will get you going smoothly. Determining Attacks, Skill Checks, Saving Throws, Spell Resistance, Resisting spells. These are all done with a d20.
This little documentary series thing was great, really insightful and interesting to me as a person considering getting into Dnd. Thanks for the upload.
It's disturbing that I recognize the HeroQuest boardgame minis, haha.
I haven't played D&D since 2nd Ed. But right now I'm gearing up to DM (My first time DMing!) a 4th Ed campaign. I already love 4E. It's just so streamlined! Everything is so much easier to understand and remember, freeing up mindshare for the DM to concentrate on weaving a story, AS IT SHOULD BE!
And stuff like the power cards are amazing player aids. They speed up all the mechanical aspects, so you can ENJOY THE GAME.
Ive been a DM for 20 years and the way way is to run a campain how I choose. We use a combination of 2nd,3rd,and 4th. Its very fun, this way. Im the DM and the world is ran MY way anyway. I hate how magic items are in the players books in 4th-theres is no mystery when the players can see the items. And in this video, that guys says you have to re-roll on a 20--no way-20 is auto hit and double damage-nuff said. The DM has the power to change any rule
@JohnnySilver78 I Agree, I love 3.5 however a mix of AD&D with 4 , makes a complete game,As for i second, a 20 is a 20 critical hit, no saveing throws..however sometimes i ask reroll if is high encounter such as red dragon, archers arrow cleves threw the face into the brain,,Enemy is dead.
@JohnnySilver78 ya but he simplified it so people who never played, IE those supposed to be watching the video, could have a understanding what rule set does what. they explained it prity good in my opinion.
The simplicity of 4E saddens me as it would sadden George Orwell or Ray Bradbury, though I do agree that 3.5 can be tedious and contains broken rules prone to abuse. I deal with it constantly, and it's aggravating.
Marvelous documentary. I'll be linking people to this when I'm asked about DMing.
From what I have heard 4E tends to be a bit less random in Character creation which can both be a good and bad thing.
I actually haven't played a game yet, but I've got about 3 other people who would like to play. I got a Players Handbook for a DnD Knockoff (Swords and Wizardry) and printed out some Paper dice, so now I just need to figure out how to DM.
This helped a bit, but I'm still not sure how to start, If anyone a bit more experienced could help me out a bit that would be Awesome.
You were doing so well until you got to the 4E section, then you lost me.
I've seen at least one major difference between how you guys run games and how we do in Australia. A lot of your game groups are kind of quantity over quality. Down here we try for quality of play over quantity of players.
Also i didn't realize how much stuff you need to play 4E. Our group is literally just Pen and Paper (just like the old tag line).
@xxBlacksundayxx yeah but i didn't want to say it. Theres also a whol heap of needless "stuff" that has creeped in with 4E. But that just shows the generational gap between the generation they aimed for and the previous generation.
I love 4E. Older editions were just so unfair. You were either a wizard with more options that you could comprehend or a fighter with the option range of bash vs. do nothing.
4E gives everyone something to do always.
As long as you have a good DM, it's always better than 3.5... You do have a good DM right?
I have been playing D&D for over 20 years..... 3.5, 4.0 is NOT D&D. It is an entirely different game. Somewhere in this post someone said that the game has been "dummied down" for kids and I agree. AD&D 1st and 2nd edition are by far the the better game types. I am all for using minis however, when too much detail is physically used the point of the game is lost.....imagination. Just my opinion.
@Arakaiscladdath There are three types of players, in my opinion. The old school D&D players such as yourself who say 1st and AD&D are superior, then the players who live to abuse 3.5's broken spell mechanics and think it's best. Then there are players who love 4.0 for the gaming aspects, and the fact that with a good DM the RP experience isn't lost.
@Fluffymoogle True that. All the versions have their points but what it breaks down to is that its a game not about mechanics but about role playing and just having fun with your friends :) Oh and about +1 maces :)
I am definitely a half-ass player and mediocre dungeon master...my party doesn't have miniatures - we use a dry erase board. I'd love to get involved in a group that is so in depth and hardcore, though...this is epic.
Someone talking about playing a bard and the fact he liked being able to pick other class features. That annoys me greatly because it was a big part of my 3.5 experience that I could multiclass and in 4th Ed I can't that is one of my biggest peeves about 4th Ed that and it's too formulaic, all the powers work the same way whereas magic and melee work in fundamentally different ways in 3rd and 3.5. So now I play Pathfinder, I suggest it to anyone who has the same problems with 4th that I did.
The guy was talking about rolling again on a 20 to confirm if it's a critical hit... If he didn't like the rule he could've just changed the rule to fit the player's needs. They dont need follow everything by the book :\
As the States obviously hold the most of RPG community in general, I've gotta notice that the styles & the games of DM's you've presented here, somehow seem shallow, D&D 4th being' nuffin more than a revamped old school dungeon delving fast & easy experience, packed in tight and casual gamer friendly engine, feelin' a lot more like a MMO or PC game than what tabletop RPGs used to be. Don't get me wrong, I don't find 4th bad at all, xcept it smells of pro-cash corporate biz a way too much.
I see what you mean but I don't think it has much to do with editions - more with groups, DMs and their style. Sure, a game like Warhammer or Vampire is more made for non-combat/investigation stuff, but you can do it perfectly well in D&D 4th as well. All you need is a DM with the same mindset. As for fast & easy, I'm all for that, personally.
I cannot but agree :) Essentially, quality spent time havin' fun with friends is what it all should be about, and I'm surely not questioning that at all.
As for my comment above, 'twas just a random observation :) I'm not being judgmental or anythin' like that :) Fast & easy, sure, but with all the perversely detailed and in-depth options and possibilities, too. And still dancing on the fine edge between commercial and soulfull, garage feelin' . Like 3.5th and Pathfinder :) Of course, strictly personally speaking :)
I must admit I have only played 3 sessions of 3.5 but I enjoyed those sessions. Personally, what I feel the games you see in these videos are missing, is atmosphere. Looks to me like they picked DMs for this show who put together cool encounters &make for a fun game but don't seem to be very concerned about lore, story and mood. That's perfectly fine, but I'm different. Did you think of that too when you said "shallow" or were you referring to tactical depth in combat?
That's exactly what I thought :) I do understand, but am against that kind of "generic" style - just look at that DM dude chasin' for available players, advertising and organizing and whatsoever. I understand hobby, and passion, and all those fulfilling aspects of the game - that's the fuel that turns it into an intimate, one of a kind experience! And that's something I surely haven't seen in this movie. But, hey, that's just me - no matter how, if peepz are havin fun, I'm givin two thumbz up :)
As an experienced player, 3.5 allows me to do some really crazy, customized characters, and I like the challenge of making something really unique.
As a DM? There's no frakkin' way I want to create a 3.5 campaign from scratch. 4e makes DMing incredibly easy.
Furthermore, if you've got any new gamers in the group, 4e is absolutely the way to go. It's just so much more straightforward. (And now that we've moved well past the core books there's decent variety in character options.)
Great representation of D&D. Nice directing, voice overs, camera work and background music. Simple yet professionally done as an informative mini-documentary. Very entertaining. Great work.
and this is the part of the documentary where i ask myself if it is endorsed by wizzard...-.- but its still nice...

Great work.
