Awesome! I was doing research for my class on the first over the air broadcast [by Reginald Aubrey Fessenden on Chrismas Eve 1906]. I ended up on Dan Phillips' blog when it came to details of O Holy Night and found this video there. Phillips has the original french poem, and an English translation that simply blows away Dwight's translation. This version of Alagna's is probably the most moving I've ever heard; got my copy at Amazon.com.
Ditto moppettshow and MTondeleo. Alagna deserved better!
@moppettshow OMG yes, it is disgraceful, worse than the worst home movies, camera work from the Cretin School of Infinitesimal Attention Span, which goes with MTV pop videos but is a barbarous insult to a magnificent singer like Alagna.
Selten etwas so anrührendes gehört.
Thanks for posting. Roberto does a nice job but he can't hold a candle to Jussi Bjorling's Swedish version, O Helga Natt. There are several versions of that on YouTube.
My dad has been singing this song in Church for the past sixty years, and his voice is still remarkable & vibrant. Brings back great memories of peaceful times.
J'adore la chanson et la version de M. Alagna, mais franchement.. doesn't his expression/voice/face remind anyone else of 'Operaman' from SNL, played by Adam Sandler?
It's amazing how French always suits his voice- those vowels are so well placed. It might not be perfect, and he might be singing it like Massenet, but it works! haha.
Ahh!
theres no doubt in my mind hes up there with jussi bjorling in terms of voice and perfect diction and phrasing ill even put him in there with mario lanza also for obvious reasons.
@leboharold Comparing anyone to Bjorling is dangerous territory! Bjorling could carry such a huge range of styles and languages perfectly. You've heard the Temple Saint Bjorling recorded with Miller? *faint*
This is a little strange, seeing that he is a native Frenchman and I am a hybrid franco-italo-armenian American, but in the second verse he pronounced the "m" in Rédempteur, whereas none before him, such as Thill and Vallon, ever pronounced a silent consonant in this song, or in any other song, for that matter. Except in high French such as Guillaume de Machaut and those dudes. Who knows? Maybe he is smarter than we are.
Well sung, but it would be nice to have a little difference between the two verses. I think the last should start clear, with a more triumphant finish. Also, I missed the octave at the end - my favourite part!
wonderful roberto alagna is one of my favourites i have him singing this on cd so its a pleasure to see him sing it too because he puts so much emotion and feeling into his performances.
We sang this beautiful song every Christmas at my School (Congleton Grammar School for Girls, U.K.) - we always sang it in French - I don't even know it in English!! but I still remember all the words even though it was over thirty years ago!! thank you for putting in on.
I hadn't actually heard of Roberto Alagna when I saw this, but I definitely want to hear more of him! I am singing this for my Grade 4 voice and this has really showed me how I should be singing it! Thankyou, MUEZZAB!
It's the first time I realize the true meaning of the words and the song. The Redemption of humankind! and the witnessing with this beautiful and awesome voice!
My fathers fav Christmas song also. Had to be in french though, the english version just didn't cut it with him. Wishing you the happiest of New Years.

fvrp....Pavarotti is dead...haven't you heard??? Now Roberto Alagna in his mid 40's is the best dramatic tenor in the world.... and I don't care what some idiots in Milan think... Merry Christmas , Joeux Noel!!
I think Alagna is an excellent tenor but I believe he is a lyric tenor, not a dramatic.Corelli and Del Monaco were dramatic tenors. But I love Alagna's voice and this is a very good rendition. Merry Christmas.
