I ended up on Dan Phillips' blog when it came to details of O Holy Night and found this video there. Phillips has the original french poem, and an English translation that simply blows away Dwight's translation. This version of Alagna's is probably the most moving I've ever heard; got my copy at Amazon.com.

This is a little strange, seeing that he is a native Frenchman and I am a hybrid franco-italo-armenian American, but in the second verse he pronounced the "m" in Rédempteur, whereas none before him, such as Thill and Vallon, ever pronounced a silent consonant in this song, or in any other song, for that matter. Except in high French such as Guillaume de Machaut and those dudes. Who knows? Maybe he is smarter than we are.
