  • I agree this is the best rendition of this song

  • Why do some people criticise Roberto Alagna?.well i think that need to listen to this -very few peopke can sing this beautiful song as well as him.Bravo Roberto

  • This is the best rendition of a famous piece of music sung by one of the top tenors so why is so much attention placed on a rather ordinary orchestra

  • avec ce chanteur une pure merveille

  • Une merveille de plus ici sur terre ! Bravo Roberto.

  • It's Pacino's son in The Godfather III !

  • Awesome! I was doing research for my class on the first over the air broadcast [by Reginald Aubrey Fessenden on Chrismas Eve 1906]. I ended up on Dan Phillips' blog when it came to details of O Holy Night and found this video there. Phillips has the original french poem, and an English translation that simply blows away Dwight's translation. This version of Alagna's is probably the most moving I've ever heard; got my copy at Amazon.com.

Ditto moppettshow and MTondeleo. Alagna deserved better!

  • Shit directing. When you want to see him on the high notes, it goes to the orchestra.

  • @moppettshow OMG yes, it is disgraceful, worse than the worst home movies, camera work from the Cretin School of Infinitesimal Attention Span, which goes with MTV pop videos but is a barbarous insult to a magnificent singer like Alagna.

  • 5:04 OUI!

  • Still my favourite Tenor. Nobody does it like Roberto Alagna

  • Si beau!!

  • Magnifica voz. Maravilha!

  • His gestures are far from the meaning of this music and text, but he's OK

  • Bravo! Great voice and tehnique.

Selten etwas so anrührendes gehört.

  • So beautiful!!! I love songs that are sung in the original language in which it was written, even if I can't understand it.

  • Thanks for posting. Roberto does a nice job but he can't hold a candle to Jussi Bjorling's Swedish version, O Helga Natt. There are several versions of that on YouTube.

  • What a good voice!!!! Quelle belle voix!!!!

  • because it was composed originally in french speech by ADOLPHE ADAM

  • Minuit !

  • Wow...his voice brings tear to my eyes...so beautiful

  • Roberto surpasses even this performance when he sings La Marseillaise!

  • Many critisise but a magnicant song sung by a magnifcant singer! I love it!!!!

  • I learned this song in French, before learning it in English. Either way, a veautiful worship song.

  • My dad has been singing this song in Church for the past sixty years, and his voice is still remarkable & vibrant. Brings back great memories of peaceful times.

  • beautiful

  • J'adore la chanson et la version de M. Alagna, mais franchement.. doesn't his expression/voice/face remind anyone else of 'Operaman' from SNL, played by Adam Sandler?

  • It's amazing how French always suits his voice- those vowels are so well placed. It might not be perfect, and he might be singing it like Massenet, but it works! haha.

  • charisme avec un "H"

  • Keurig

  • he goes sharp on long notes. wobble, flapping in the wind. no nuance.

I like his articulation on "ceux qu'enchaînait le fer".

the reprise of "peuple debout" should be done by choir or orchestra, NEVER by the soloist, it's just silly.

  • Ahh!

  • theres no doubt in my mind hes up there with jussi bjorling in terms of voice and perfect diction and phrasing ill even put him in there with mario lanza also for obvious reasons.

  • @leboharold Comparing anyone to Bjorling is dangerous territory! Bjorling could carry such a huge range of styles and languages perfectly. You've heard the Temple Saint Bjorling recorded with Miller? *faint*

  • MERCI MONSIEUR ALAGNA!

    bravo Mr Alagna

  • This is a little strange, seeing that he is a native Frenchman and I am a hybrid franco-italo-armenian American, but in the second verse he pronounced the "m" in Rédempteur, whereas none before him, such as Thill and Vallon, ever pronounced a silent consonant in this song, or in any other song, for that matter. Except in high French such as Guillaume de Machaut and those dudes. Who knows? Maybe he is smarter than we are.

  • @sillyboydeux Actually, he doesn't prononce the 'm'. He prononces the 'p' : "Le.. ré.demp./teur....

  • Because it was composed in French by Adolphe Adam( French composer)

  • Well sung, but it would be nice to have a little difference between the two verses. I think the last should start clear, with a more triumphant finish. Also, I missed the octave at the end - my favourite part!

  • wonderful roberto alagna is one of my favourites i have him singing this on cd so its a pleasure to see him sing it too because he puts so much emotion and feeling into his performances.

  • Magnifique. MERCI.

  • The song is called 'Cantique de Noel' not 'Minuit, Chrétiens!' which are only the first two words.

  • @metacarple nonon nous autres on appel ca Minuit Chrétien.

  • We sang this beautiful song every Christmas at my School (Congleton Grammar School for Girls, U.K.) - we always sang it in French - I don't even know it in English!! but I still remember all the words even though it was over thirty years ago!! thank you for putting in on.

  • I hadn't actually heard of Roberto Alagna when I saw this, but I definitely want to hear more of him! I am singing this for my Grade 4 voice and this has really showed me how I should be singing it! Thankyou, MUEZZAB!

    Larga vida a Alagna!!!!!!

It's the first time I realize the true meaning of the words and the song. The Redemption of humankind! and the witnessing with this beautiful and awesome voice!

    Amen Jesus lives

  • The favorite Christmas song of my father, who died when I was young. Tears in my eyes.

  • My fathers fav Christmas song also. Had to be in french though, the english version just didn't cut it with him. Wishing you the happiest of New Years.

  • The best Christmas song EVER.

    Quelle chanson criant de vérité.

  • Meraviglioso Roberto

  • Molto bello !!!!!

  • magnifique !

  • Superbe. Toute mon enfance!

Superb! Childhood memories. What a song, and, yes, it needs to be in French!

    Joyeux Noel.

  • why does this sound so much better when it's done in French ?

  • Cause it'a a french song. From 1843.

  • @toreadorable most things do sound better in a romance language! ;)

  • @toreadorable french is the language that this carol was originally written in. that has a lot to do with that.

  • @toreadorable because there's know SKi slope in the singing by skilled and trained craftsmen. Like Michael Bolton and outher poulars singers who have tricks to sing. THe have no real VIBRATO in there singing , but sing as if th ahave a vibrator in their throat.

  • @toreadorable because french fucking owns. :D

  • @toreadorable because it was originally written in French xD everything sounds better when its sung in his original language...

  • @toreadorable that's the beauty of the original version.

  • @toreadorable

EVERYTHING sounds so much better when it's done in French!

  • @toreadorable because french people are the best!!!!

  • @toreadorable, apparently it was originally written in French, then translated.

  • @toreadorable It was composed by Adolphe Adam in French.

  • @toreadorable

-For me the best Christmas song ever

-In meiner Meinung das bestes Weinachten Lied

  • damn ...

i remember that my brother used to sing this song every year ...

and he had such an good interpretation that he could make people cry ...

    excellent song :)

  • Merci beaucoup Laurence.

    Quelle voix !! *****************

    J'ai beaucoup apprécié ce chanteur.

    Catherine ♥

  • Excellente interpretation

  • superbe Roberto

  • Quel talent, quel coeur, quel carisme. Bravo Roberto.

    Jean-Pierre

  • @pintro66 VIVA ALAGNA!!!!

  • This is my favorite Christmas song. I like it when my knees buckle at "Peuple à genoux" (men on your knees). I can still smell the incense and feel the excitement about going home and seeing Santa Claus has come by.

  • Assolutamente meraviglioso!

Merci.

  • la partition est ecrite ainsi

  • He seems to struggle a bit on the higher notes... poor Alagna :(

  • Roberto Alagna is the best Spinto tenor for today.

  • magnifique.

  • I wish it was Christmas so I could listen to this all day! I wish someone would hit the tubular bells player though!

  • haha, i know, right?

  • When he says: Redempteur, it's soooo awsome

  • très jolie

  • sounds ok but the best version is from Mario Lanza o holy night, that hits your heart

  • Trés belle chanson

  • What a tremendous effort! What a lovely voice! Bravo. May he never be forgotten.

  • fvrp....Pavarotti is dead...haven't you heard??? Now Roberto Alagna in his mid 40's is the best dramatic tenor in the world.... and I don't care what some idiots in Milan think... Merry Christmas , Joeux Noel!!

  • I think Alagna is an excellent tenor but I believe he is a lyric tenor, not a dramatic.Corelli and Del Monaco were dramatic tenors. But I love Alagna's voice and this is a very good rendition. Merry Christmas.

  • Since he's the best, is there any chance of someone putting his version onto YouTube?

How does he compare with Georges Thill?

  • Alagna is the sexiest tenor ever. He made this dumb song sexy too.

  • You almost manage to make this wonderful tenor dumb with your stupid comment. Could you please stop being such an obnoxious morron?

  • ta gueule l'anglais.

Vive le Francais. vive les langues romanes. A bas l'anglais.

  • Good, but Pavarotti is the best forever!

  • Pourquoi toujours comparer ???

  • super chonsons joyeux noel a tous

  • A toi aussi, ca l'arrive!

  • Just marvelous!

  • Magnifique

  • Très bonne prestation qui nous fait pleurer.

  • Beautiful

  • Beautiful. I love this piece. I am a real christmas person and i adore his christmas album. This is a lovely performance
