  • @lyndacallen my indian mate says about half an hour in the fridge should do it

  • thanks so much

  • So exciting to see the doe epanding in the flame.

    I realy love it.

I like that you use whole wheat flour, no oil healthy recipe.

    I will do it.

    Thank you very much.

  • i love your energy. Keep it up!

  • Did you get a chance to watch Aarti Party - she cooked something that was more like Paratha and called it Roti - what do you think.

  • thank you so much i'm going to try this, this weekend

  • At 2:51, did she say "It puffs up. Like Lysol." As in the disinfectant spray?

  • @JuneAliShow - It puffs up - like so.

  • Her kitchen looks like my government housing kitchen.

  • verey nice ,if i can make it , any one can make it ,LOL

  • It could be worse, your kid might have picked the drums instead of the saxaphone.

  • I enjoyed your presentation.

    Fun and easy to follow:)

I really liked seeing the Roti balloon up when you set it over the flame!

I never saw that before but I shall try it myself... today!:-)

..My youngest teenage daughter will love it. Ha, maybe she has seen it many times.

One comment below asks about her glass topped stove. Many people have electric stoves.

...I wonder if contact with that red hot element might be a more intense than the heat in the upswish of the flames?

    ...Experiment time!

  • Thanks a lot for posting this :)

  • THANKYOU,DEAR...

  • Great video. If I also had a glass top stove, would I be able to use a bbq to preform the last step? thanks ahead

  • I am hungrey now

  • ms.sfehmi,do you have a dip recipe for the roti?in indian restaurant ive tried roti with 3 kinds of dip.!thank you!

  • @jaloring I have several curry videos. Please go to my channel by clicking on sfehmi and then search for mutton curry recipe. I have many more, palak gosht, daal gosht, shrimp curry, kabab curry, chicken curry etc.

  • you are very sweet.. thanks for the tips on making roti dough, mine always cooks too much and I did not understand why they were so hard lol...

I usually make small balls, and they almost never puff up :(

mihgt it be because it is too thick or too small???

    Thanks in advance...

    Harpreet from Brazil

  • Good job, thanks

  • those glass top ovens only work by creating heat in metal pans by induction which means the oven senses when metal is on top and that causes the heat to start so putting a roti on will not make any heat.

i think it would be possible to make rotis on a glass top oven by getting a pizza plate made of metal with lots of holes in. put that on the glass and tne oven will sense the metal and heat up and the roti on top will cook.

  • why there is the candel burining?????

  • yummy!

    :)

  • I had to let you know that i tried making it myself....and it turned out great..my husband was so pleased.(not perfect or anything but edible) Thank you for all you help on you videos.

  • Awesome! Can't wait to try it!

  • Thank you auntie for your video. I think now my husband will get proper roti (You can't imagine how many times I spoilt it)

    Regards :)

  • we ate this on friday night with some sauce's it was really delicious, i thought it would be hard to make but watching this video was fun and easy to understand thanks a lot

  • SkyHigh Web Designing & Web Promotion..HOLLA AT ME

  • Thank you Sheba, now I am in competition with my mum :)

  • I have an electric stove. Mine does not always puff. But what we do is cook it mostly on the tava, then we have a round grate thingy over one of the large burners. Turn the burner on high and put the half-done roti on the grate. That usually works for us.

  • My Grandma Be making it Yum

  • I really like your vid, however I have an electric stove so if I left it on the tawa will it puff up like that.

  • @afterdark25 Most likely not. The trick on the electric stove is to cook it on one side on the Tava, turn it over and use a cloth to press the roti on the tava. You should see some bubbles pop up and it may puff up a bit. Usually the results are not the same and that is why I prefer a gas stove.

There are some other videos on youtube that show the trick please do check those out too.

  • great video! thanks for sharing!

would it be possible to do this on a glass top/flat top stove?

  • @supalous - I am afraid the results are not the same. The only thing you can do with a glass top is to turn it to the highest heat and use a cloth to press the roti. It may puff up - not guarnateed. There are some other videos that show you that technique. Check those out too. Best of luck.

  • thanks for the encouragement.i'll keep on practising making roti/

  • coolest thing the way it puffs up.

  • superb hun! love all your video's and am now getting fatter. xxx

  • LMAO! MY brother posted this on my facebook wall as a joke.

Tip: To get them round, You need a floured surface so the pera, [dough ball] can move around on its own. That's why we use a wooden chakla. or board.

You press down lightly at the outside edges with your belna [rolling pin] the dough moves around by itself. Watch someone do it and you'll get it.

  • Its called a skillet.... I didn't know!

  • @OverXn

    they are also called Tava

  • omg lmao i thought she was crazy when she put it on the fire lmao she knoews what shes doing thou lol

  • wow super cool, thats crazy, putting it on the flame, i was certain it would burn but doesn't look like it has, i will have to try thanks!!

  • I love her. She is so cute and funny. I enjoyed watching her video. Would love to know what you do with them once they are cooked.

  • eat them with curry. I should post a video eating Chapati. :)

  • I feel bad that you're so concerned that they aren't perfect circles. I guess this is a cultural thing but I can tell you that I totally wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said anything.

  • but you did not show that how to make roti material?

  • Thank you for subscribing. I have another video " making dough using a food processor", when you get time please watch that.

  • i was asking myself the same

  • I totally understand the challenge of using an electric stove. Once the roti is cooked from one side turn it over and try pressing it with a cloth in order for air to build up. That way it does puff on electric stove too. However, not always so do not be disappointed.

Keep this in mind when looking for a new house or new appliances. : )

  • I like that you throw it on the gas flame but what do you do if you have an electric stove....anyone???

  • yes I have the same problem , I have electric stove , it;s very hard to make roti on it and not the same good taste like what u can do on Gas Stove

  • LMAO make thr "round thing-gees" lol there called balls

  • It's okay, its never a perfect circle. :) I've made roti before but it was a bit hard. I'll try your recipe some time. Thanks alot.

  • I'm a Bajan and I luvvv a roti ya hear, de ting iz taste onnnnn (well actually de roti skin) i just watched dis video to c how to get the skin really thin!

  • Now THAT is how you make Roti!

    /watch?v=2P7eLAt-iOM&feature=related

  • umm yea i am half indian

  • it should only take 30 sec on each side....actually 30 on one side and less on the other

  • r u serious im half hindu n roti is sooo easy make our of just water n pouder

  • u cant be "half hindu" and its not called a rolling pin its a bilna!!!!! where all my triniz!!!!!!

  • if u time it...it should be 30 seconds one side, 30 seconds other side, then flip and then it will rise ....

  • loved it. You're a great chef, why don't you open a restaurant or a shop of some kind. (Just a suggestion)

  • You always do a great job. I tried this one and it turned out great. I have never had this before and it is easy to make it. Thank you for taking the time to share all these recipes!

  • lol looks like your an amateur when it comes to rotis. I bet you either eat a lotta rice or use processed nan bread from the superstore..lol

  • cool. They are great but I have an electric range so can't pop them.

  • Keep on posting more video's!! they are great.!

    Greetings from Holland!

  • i LOVE your video's. thank you for posting these great recipes. please make more!! i'm going to subscribe! thank you :) !

  • Yes you can mix different kind of flour to get different flavors. However, do not expect those to puff up. When you mix other flours I would suggest you use a bit of ghee or butter. Check out my video on paratha.

  • How come my roti does not puff up like yours do?

Can I also use different kinds of flour like chickpea flour with whole wheat and millet flour with whole wheat? Thanks. strawberry

  • is it posible to flavour the chapati

  • Yes - some people use butter or ghee. Right after chapati is cooked take a little butter and spread it over with a spoon.

  • how long do you have to chill the dough?

  • Minimum 1 hour - preferably over night

  • Salam itnay goray goray saf suthray hath aur eay tehri mehri moti moti rotian....lagta hai Sfehmi aap nay khud kabhi rotian nahi pakai hain....lol

  • Whaha when it popd up it loks

    like a ballon HWHAHAHA!

  • I can't believe you're not using any oil or butter! I'll give it a try =)

  • OMG.don't.say.aeeeeennnnd.one.more.time!!!

  • ayend.......and.....funny...lol

  • She reminds me of Aishwarya Rai :)

  • thank you i appreciate all the help you've been giving

  • thank u i appreciate it another question i have for you is does the cloth have to be damp or it doesnt matter?

  • The cloth should not be damp. What some people do is to cover the dough with a damp cloth. You can do that but for cooking rotis use a dry cloth.

  • thanks i appreciate it i made an attempt last night it came out well but it never puffed up only in little spots i also used all purpose regular flour does that matter?

  • Yes - that does matter. Try buying chapati flour, it is available in any Indian store.

  • does the roti skin puff up on an electric stove?

  • Yes it does puff, however the technique is slightly different. While cooking on an electric stove, have it on high and press the roti on the skillet with a cloth. It will then puff up.

  • No for plain roti yeast is not needed. Yeast is needed for naans.

I am not familiar with Australian packaging. My guess is that you are right. Another suggestion will be to find an Indian Store in your town and buy a small package if chapati flour. There are several brands like Lakshmi, Swad, MHD who cater internationally.

The Grocery store staff should be able to help.

  • Great videos, learned a thing or two. Thanks.

I see that the roti puffed up nicely, is yeast an essential ingredient?

Also, in Australia, we have plain flour or whole-meal flour, I guess the latter is what you eman by whole wheat flour.

  • i like the way you threw the roti on the the TAVA

  • This may have to do with the dough and the thickness of the Roti. If you make it too thick, yes it will turn out hard.

For dough making watch my video making dough for roti.

A little bit of practice should get you there.

  • When I try it it always turns out too hard like a cracker. I can never get it to puff up.

  • hey i can make it more in round shape!!!

  • Can you add garlic or cilantro or something to the dough for flavor? also I get the roti skins from the trini shop and they have a dry bean stuffing inside are they made with the same process?

  • Normally there is nothing added to the dough except butter or oil. I have another video stuffed paratha. Check that out. This is what may be more close to what you find at the trini shop.

  • hi, what type of flour is used to make these, thanks.

  • Whole wheat flour. I prefer Laxmi Brand from Canada which is available in the US. You should be able to find some good flour at your local Indian store.

  • you can make it in a frying pan da tefal ones work great with the heatspot makes sure it's hot and roti is nice and level which'll result in da roti puffing th do this before you put it on the pan feel the roti with the palm of your hand to roll out unlevel bits

  • you can make it in a frying pan da tefal ones work great with the heatspot makes sure it's hot and roti is nice and level which'll result in da roti puffing th do this before you put it on the pan feel the roti with the palm of your hand to roll out unlevel bits

  • i want to know if i can use a frying pan ? from japan thanks

  • You can use a frying pan but do not be disappointed if Roti does not puff or come out the way you see it in the video. It depends on the frying pan too. The heavier the base the better.

  • thanks 4 ur answer ;)....u r great :)

  • thanks for this video. Now i know how to make chapati!

  • If I make the dough in advance how long will it last in the fridge? Is there anything I need to do to it to make it stay fresher for longer???

  • don't you put butter in the skillet?

  • For Roti I prefer not to.

Please watch my video stuffed paratha - there I have used olive oil, you can use butter.

  • ALso if you have an ELECTRIC stove top, how can I make it puff like that?

  • When you see the bubbles pop up press by a towel or a cloth. It should puff up. Do not be discouraged if it does not puff up the first time.

  • How long does the ROTI need to be chilled? this could explain why it does not taste right when I cook ROTI, lol

  • Roti does not have to be chilled. Roti tastes best when hot. ( I know you were joking but do not want others to get confused) However, the dough needs to be chilled or rested for some time. Couple of hours is good. I leave it over night.

  • Great! I love chappati.

  • Lol, take it or leave it, I know that's right. I made this today, and I liked it, but what can you add with Roti?

  • Thanks - Roti as you may know is usually eaten with curry. I have several curry videos please try Chicken Curry that goes well with Roti.

Their are numerous options one is to spread a bit of HOMOS, add slices of tomatoes and lettuce and roll it into a sandwich. Kids also love it when sugar is spread over a layer of butter and Roti is rolled as a sandwich.

Will appreciate if you can ask your friends to subscribe too.

  • You're about to get too many subscriptions, lol. And I tried that spicy Chicken Curry, and I'm SO glad I got that pressure cooker for my birthday, because I hadn't used it until now. I brought it to work and shared since I had a bunch of chicken that no one claimed in the fridge. So I had to use it before it went bad.

You should have seen us when we first made the Roti and put it on the stove. We were like "It's gonna explode, take it off!" Lol

  • Hi Sheba! We just found your videos for making roti and other Indian dishes! Your explanations are great and you cracked us up with your sense of humor! Thanks and keep up the great work!!

  • Yes

  • was the flame on when you put the roti on the burner to finish cook?

  • Yes the flame was on.

  • I made a lil animation of you shaking the rolling pin, it's on the background of my profile ;)

  • make round thingys???? you mean BALLS?

  • Yes dough balls.

  • i think i will try to do it your way...because i get irritated when mine doesn't puff up in the frying pan! lol

  • I love roti :) I always order some when I do to Indian restuarants.

  • Wow, fantastic ! See ya !

  • mine never puff up... im do disappointed :(

  • A lot depends upon the dough and the thickness of the roti. Try rolling it to a level thinner than what you are used to.

  • how long do you have to let the dough sits?

  • Atleast 30 minutes. Preferably 1 hour

  • you need to make them with atta flour for one thing but you don't need either a gas stove or a tawa to make decent roti. Can be made in an ordinary frying pan (cast iron best) and press down on the dough in the pan with a towel to get the dough to bubble up.

  • I am a guy though, live by my own and I also make very good ones ;) it takes practice :)

  • This is an excellent video. I have made several attempts before watching this video and my chapatti's always came out wrong. Became too hard after cooking. I knew where I was going wrong, the consistency of the dough was too dry. I had to make it more sticky like. I also cooked my chapatti's just the way you did and puffed up exactly like yours! THANKS!

  • This was fascinating to watch..I have never tried this type of bread before...I am going to try my hand at it,,,Do you think you could use a griddle to cook it on and then put it over a gas stove flame to puff it? thanks for the video

  • To get round shape keep the roller pin at an angle (3-4 degrees)on outer edge, One will notice, the Roti will move around in reverse direction (Newton's Law), giving you perfect round shape. If sticking, apply more(Flour)& get the size you desire. NOTE: Keep the the dough to proper consistency & not very thin having too much water.Best Wishes! Ashok

  • Some points are added:

The skillet/TAVA is available in all Indian Grocery shops or get online from "HAWKINS" Indian Mfg.for pressure cookers, Non-stick TAVA or Skillet in different weight & sizes.

Roti is always rolled & when the heavy based Skillet is hot enough then it is put on it, it is not turned many times. It is turned once & then cooked on gas as shown in the video.

  • Hi,great touch with the candle rt on the stove....I had a question for you the dough press that u use while making puris, what brand is it?and where did u get it from .ur help is really appreciated!

  • Google Totilla Maker and you should find something on line

  • Well i did before i asked the question, but i wanted to know which one u have,as i have seen it work,so i would like to get the same brand,I hope u see my point, thank u in advance

  • I searched for the manufacturer of my Tortilla maker. The Company was sold and later went under. Sorry no luck there. I have seen several others on the net. I am sure you can easily find one and they will work fine

  • For Dough press get a Good quality dough press from India or get it from any Indian Grocery stores as we get the same in Sydney for A$ 40.00, or ask one from India to be sent by Indian Speed Post Parcel, it will cost only Rs. 2500/00 including postage & will be delivered in one week.

  • ok ... but just asking .. what is the difference between a phulka and a chapati ? and btw .. your poor husband ! my sympathies ....

  • Chapati is usually bigger in size than phulka. Phulka is small and as a result puffs more. Other wise there is no major difference in taste.

  • wow very fasinating ... you really know what your doing!! my mom's roti comes out round so you know what they say keep practicing and practice makes perfect! i would love to see you making pancakes!!

  • o wow. what an interesting way to make bread :D im a luver of the frybread myself. but i wouldnt mind trying this :D reminds me of cowboy bread :)

  • Where online can I purchase a roti skillet?

Just made some 15mins ago but mine are whole grain..lol..anyways, somehow I missed her recipe, must find it.

Hey Sheba, thanks for taking the time to cook for us.

  • Please check out your Indian Store in town or around. They should have one. The heavier the better. Or they can get one for you if you order.

  • I made this last Sunday & it turned out fine...only it didn't puff up unlike this demonstration. Never mind.

  • wow lol dont care

  • ok i'll tell you how to make them round :)

my mother don't use the rolling pen at all.. she put the doug directly in the pan and use her fingers and press the dough to the inches of the pan (just a little bit at a time) and then use the other hand to make the dough go around in the pan, then it becomes round :) you will not burn your fingers if you are fast between the pressings.. good luck ^D you will learn, i did -.-

  • Thank you to all who have taken the time to comment. As I say if I can do it any one can. Yes I need to practice more so that these come out round. I am trying.

  • Hi..I think there's always something wrong with my dough..my chapatis are always tough and hard. If I don't have a food processor does a blender work?

  • thank you ^D i know another recipe of rotti but it's not like this :> but this is way cool to :D

  • Thank you very much!

  • You make it look so easy - I will have to give it a try later on today. Thanks!

  • so what if u don't have that kind of stove? i don't wanna sound dumb but do u actually use that candle in a jar? like the one on the stove?

  • You can use the electric stove. Instead of cooking it on the flame leave the roti on the skillet and press, it should puff up.

Yes the candles are available, I bought it from a candle store. Helps in clearing up the food cooking smell.

  • believe you me...when she said "its not perfectly round" i expected something close to an oval...but damnnnnn..that thing looks..odd shaped

  • wow, phulka turned out so well!

  • Thanks to you, best roti I've made. My wife was impressed!

  • Are you using a plain cutting board to roll the rotis? Is it easier?

  • Yes it is a plain cutting board with a flat surface. I find it easier provides more space and I can easily clean up the extra wheat.

  • believe me your video is great, thank for showing

step by step how make roti.

please do more video like this teaching indian cooking

other people who dont know about indian food,

  • great video great way to do it. i will try. thank you for shering
