As one who uses generators all the time I suggest that people mount a fire extinguisher on the frame of their generator so that way whatever the reason such as refueling accident or a short you are ready to put the fire out.
@DBIGMAN812MANY the transfer panel prevents any power from backfeeding down the utility line. that is one of the major reasons for using a transfer switch.
people have suggested just hooking your generator up to an outlet in the house and running your home that way, which is VERY dangerous, the transfer panel safely provides your home with power and allows the power utility workers to do their job safely.
@lilredmum great. glad you liked it. i was concerned this one might be too boring. my problem is that i shoot and edit the video , so i lack that fresh set of eyes to see it how everyone else does. there was a lot of information to get across on this one.
@erochow A ton of information! As someone who knows nothing about generators, I would probably say that unless I read the book (or hubby did--like thats gonna happen) I would have thought you need to have the generator indoors to prevent shorting it out in a storm--seriously--not a friggen clue on those! I love how you stressed over and over NOT to use them indoors! Safety first! OH! And read the manual! lol
Do these need building permits?

@albduke1 you'd have to check with a local licensed electrician about any permits needed, thanks eric - GardenFork

Eric - Dont you have to shutoff the main breaker of the electrical panel so your not back feeding power down the line that feeds your house ?
As always another informative vid. Keep the info and updates growing our way :-{}

@erchow With the battery between the generator and your laptop afforded you a bit of a safety net I'm guessing.

I would not use a generator to power any newer flat panel tvs, computers, and higher end sterieos. I would get an inverter generator to power these.

@suncountryairline good point, we power our laptop computers with the generator.
