bad news the guy that won the talisman had it melted down and only kept the sword part of it there is a article with some guys talking to the dude that one the chalice he still has it its in a bank vault somewere
@Stef4o91 Probably, but at the time of cancellation, the two existing competitions (Earthworld and Fireworld) had different winners. Steven Bell, the Earthworld winner, was a Fireworld finalist, however.
Both winners accepted fifteen grand a piece in exchange for releasing Atari from any legal liability for not holding the competition for the sword as promised.
Thanks James for this video. I bought one of these games years ago from a drug store bargain bin, but without the comic I didn't know what the hell i was doing. Really is cool that Atari attempted to do something this epic, even if it didn't pan out in the end.
@TheAeroAvatar Don't forget the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man. It actually sold a then-record 7 million copies, but they produced 12 million carts in anticipation of huge sales, spent tons of money on advertising, and many people who bought the game ended up returning it. It was universally panned as a disastrous mockery of the arcade game.
According to an interview on Atari HQ, Michael Rideout still owns the chalice, but apparently Steven Bell had most of the talisman melted down and sold to a coin dealer, for a reputed $15,000 dollars.
Atari also gave Rideout and Bell both $15,000 checks when they announced the cancellation of the contest, likely to avoid any potential liability (since they were technically guaranteed at least a chance at winning the sword).
@kingzora You are correct about the unfortunate fate of the Talisman, the guy sold it because of this recession/depression of the country from what I herd, which sucks because these treasures would worth a lot more today considering the value of gold today.
@astraltears1 It would be interesting to get an interview with Steven Bell. I'm sure people have tried, and he's probably tired of talking about a 30 year old contest, but pretty much the whole story comes from interviews with Michael Rideout and some inquiries to old Atari employees. It would really put a bow on things to get an interview about the Talisman and its fate from the horse's mouth.
So I just did the rough math, if these items were worth $25K when they were won back in the 80's, today they could easily be worth $100K if not more due to the increased price of gold.
i wish i could go back to the past to play that game and win the talas[man] i rather have that crown than have all the atari games in the world i rather run out of wifi than never even have a go im the most amiture lets player in the world im the cool sega nerd im the cool nintendo/xbox nerd im the awesome super nerd...
They should do something like this but instead of all on one system we should have 1 game for wii, 1 for xbox 360, and 1 for ps3. they they will all compete for the biggest prize
If anybody watching this video actually wants the facts about Tramiel (and yes, that's how you actually spell his name), you should read the book "On The Edge" by Brian Bagnall, about the birth of Commodore up until the release of the C64. Is he a perfect guy? Not at all. He's notoriously hard on his employees, and he's quite a ruthless businessman. But he's good at what he does, and he doesn't deserve scorn/death threats because of hearsay about items he might not even possess.
@tttc Look him up. He was a douche and didn't know anything about video games, nor did he want to learn anything about them. He is known for basically killing Atari.
@cutejoshie Holocaust survivor who founded Commodore = 'douche...doesn't know anything about video games.' Got it.
Man, what a terrible guy. How dare he overcome incredible personal adversity in his youth to become a highly successful businessman! We should totally break into the house of an 83 year old man because we think we deserve a sword that was meant to be given away in a video game contest years before we were even born.
@kingzora I was actually alive then, but thanks for thinking me that young. Did I say we should break into his house? No. I am just stating the fact that he is known throughout the industry as a terrible person to work for and for destroying Atari from the inside out. The fact that he survived the Holocaust really has little to do with this. That'd be like saying "oh, so and so was a water-head baby. that makes it okay for him to punch out grannies on the subway." Unrelated.
@cutejoshie Because "punching grannies on the subway" = "not perfectly running a company"? Again, stupid comparison. When Tramiel bought Atari, they were dying from the video game crash and would have likely just gone out of business. By pushing the Atari ST and XE early on, he turned a $25 million profit in 1986. Eventually, the Lynx and Jaguar failed miserably under Tramiel, but saying he 'destroyed (them) from the inside out' is remarkably simplistic.
@cutejoshie And you may not be advocating a B&E on Tramiel's house, but people who are are getting lots of support. You were alive then, but I guarantee you the average age of people who thumbs up'd ShultsAce's comment is 16. I hope those insipid little shits realize that James is just playing a character. I've met him before. He's a nice guy. He wouldn't want his fans talking about killing Jack Tramiel.
@kingzora I think you don't give those commenting enough credit. If you TRULY think anyone here would pull a B&E for those items, then I would suggest you get out more. People are just having fun. I suppose you're the same kind of guy who trolls Rebecca Black's page and tells people to leave her alone. Bottom line, stop trolling. Thanks.
@cutejoshie People who can't debate without reflexively calling someone a troll (the single most overused word on the internet) don't deserve any more than a snarky, single sentence response.
@tttc Not even 'has them' - 'is rumored to potentially have them.'
In truth, he was a good businessman. From an IGN article:
"Jack Tramiel always had a reputation for being a merciless businessman, but without his mantra – "We need to build computers for the masses, not the classes" – it is likely that the PC scene would be very different today...Tramiel went on to buy Atari Inc. from Time Warner in 1984 and shepherded the launch of many popular Atari computers like the XE."
@KingGrio I'm sure someone did - too bad Atari doesn't exist anymore. Perhaps forward it to the fatass whatshisface who's rumored to hold the treasures?
i am gonna find this asshole that bought atari and gonna take all the gold stuff hold the contest again and give them to the winners and not this fat bastard with millions of money is his ass
Damn... imagine if you won one of those prizes 30 years ago and sold it today. It was worth $25,000 each in the 80s, when gold was $700/ounce... Now gold is $1,700 an ounce. It would of been sweet to have that chalice. or the crown. The sword, definitely.
@ShultsAceOne YEAH lets get these things to that motherfucker and restart it i can reprogram and continue airworld we just have to do this online with Ebay to send the prizes LETS GO :D
@ShultsAceOne I have got a plan we gather the smartest and strongest gamers then we dress like sly characters (to make a stand) and we rob em ARE YOU FUCKIN WITH ME?

and so the three artifacts of gameing were lost to the ages, but one day a hero will arise to the call and reunite the lost artifacts of gameing, at this time the three platforms shall join and the platform of gold shall be known and gamers every where will united in gameing
@Thesmartgamer2012 I heard that the winner of the talisman melted it down and sold the gold for money (he kept the little sword) and the winner of the chalice currently has it in a bank vault.
Just imagine combining the epic prizes, the real-world mystery that isn't limited to just the actual game, needing intelligence and deduction skills with a modern game like Skyrim. Just imagine that.
@JBravo02 Yeah but just pitching an idea to a company is lame compared to buying a game that comes with a freaking comic, has tons of mind-wracking puzzles combined with challenges of skill, and actually feels like an epic quest as you do the same thing with 4 other games for a fucking gem-studded golden sword.
@GreenQuasar@Shojogurlp Yeah I guess if they just sort of released it without any spoiling, you'd get a few legitimate winners, but the majority would be people who simply went off some guide posted by a random nobody that just power-played the whole game in a few hours. When they got to the custom-tooled games in an observed environment part, I doubt many would even know what they were doing without a walkthrough.
@doodstormer Screwattack is holding these Iron fist of gamin Tournaments or how ever they call it. I guess if the guys are competeing in front of a live studio audience and not corrupted judges we could have such tournaments today but I guess no video game company nowadays would take on such high priced rewards for their gamers. Paying for a trip to Hollywood is more than enough nowadays to reward winners of contests.
@doodstormer i know why not make a game called fred's shit and what you do is find the lost shit in the temple of fuck. BUT it'a not all, why not make a contest for that just like the swordquest one
but instead of gols it's all made out of shit. so that's how shitty is was for me to find out the sword quest competition is over so this may be jack tremel's fucking fault!!!!!
Just found out that the winner of earthworld might have had the talisman melted down and sold to a coin dealer.... upvote this so all can se the Jackassery of Steven Bell!

Thesmartgamer2012 2 weeks ago
@Thesmartgamer2012 I heard that the winner of the talisman melted it down and sold the gold for money (he kept the little sword) and the winner of the chalice currently has it in a bank vault.

I wonder how much those prizes would be worth nowadays if the owners put them up on eBay.

Just imagine combining the epic prizes, the real-world mystery that isn't limited to just the actual game, needing intelligence and deduction skills with a modern game like Skyrim. Just imagine that.

@doodstormer 2kgames has that perfect game contest where gamers can win 1million dollars for pitching a perfect game
JBravo02 2 weeks ago
@JBravo02 Yeah but just pitching an idea to a company is lame compared to buying a game that comes with a freaking comic, has tons of mind-wracking puzzles combined with challenges of skill, and actually feels like an epic quest as you do the same thing with 4 other games for a fucking gem-studded golden sword.

Holy mother of fuck why does nobody do incredible events like this anymore.
Oh right because everybody would just cheat.

@doodstormer And they are way too greedy to make it happen with prizes so valuable

@doodstormer the company could simply just not put anything about the game online. Unless some asshole who helped made the game leaked information
GreenQuasar 2 weeks ago
@GreenQuasar @Shojogurlp Yeah I guess if they just sort of released it without any spoiling, you'd get a few legitimate winners, but the majority would be people who simply went off some guide posted by a random nobody that just power-played the whole game in a few hours.

ArtofGairyuki1 2 weeks ago
a Zelda contest like this would be awesome, with the spiritual stones and the master sword as prices.
If James makes a second AVGN movie, the Nerd looking for these treasures could make an epic storyline, and still related to videogames :P
