ih dachte die haben das eingestellt weil das zu oft störungen kam. habe ich auch mal mitbekommen. da fuhren wir dann nur oberirdisch. das waren dadurch auch spizialbusse mit türen auf beiden seiten. irgendwie cool war das

@fkfj16 from memory I filmed this in 1995.

Buses no longer use the tunnels; primarily because the 'dual-mode-bus' project was terminated after German reunification and therefore when the experimental wooden bus trackage needed replacement (it wore out) there was no money to do so.

cool i have been the first time in Essen in 1995 and i could take a photo of a Dual-Mode-Bus. It's a Mercedes-Benz O 405 GTD, but there's only one vehicle existing which were kept in original condition

yes, that once was possible in Essen, but they gave it up. I don't know why but this was unique. This buses also have its own trails on the german motorway.

@K64JT Same as the tram (streetcar) - except as the buses have rubber tyres (tires)special systems were installed to detect the buses.

Das ist schon über 15 Jahre her! Das war in Essen an vielen Stellen so dass Busse unterirdisch gefahren sind! Gibts schon lange nicht mehr, leider.

vor einigen jahren anfag ende 2000 sind die noch unter ihrdisch gefahren die busse. musst du mal gucken wenn du in der uh banhn halöte stelle stehst bzw. den tunnel einfährst, da sind links und rechts buss fahr spuren .

Der Film stammt aus den späten 80ern bzw. frühen 90ern. Die Busse fuhren ja nur etwa 8 Jahre unter Tage...

It's a normal bus (trolley bus) and they have guide wheels.

Yes they do - they have guide wheels which guides the bus along the tracks. Basically when the bus is on tracks - there is no need for the bus driver to use the steering wheel - the only thing he will do is control the speed and brake.

I like how the boarding doors are away from the driver. Hopefully the drivers have their own compartment too, so they can focus on driving and not answering questions from riders, etc.

It would be nice to have our own compartment when driving but it doesn't look like this bus does have that. Also, it looks like there is a set of doors on the other side of the bus at the front for right hand curb loading.

Seattle now has something like this! Except the buses are diesel-electric hybrids and don't have the trolley poles. And their LRVs are low-floor.

the new LRV's in Essen are low floor... and the diesel buses in Seattle may be hybrids but their diesel engines are used underground and therefore emit harmful pollutants which make people ill.

der bus konnte mit dieselmotor und mit strom fahren. er hatte auch führungsrollen an den rädern. so war er im tunnel sowas ähnliches wie ein schienenfahrzeug.

How old is this video? It gotta be some years... EVAG (Essen Transit) still had their old logo, and I can only remember vaguely those buses operating underground... I must have been 14 or 15 last time I saw one calling Porscheplatz. Funny thing is: these buses also used the overhead live-wire so they had a connector (dunno how they are called in english) installed on top of their roof's...

nein die busse gibt es nicht mehr bei der evag...auf dem boden war übrigens beton wo die busse drauf gefahren sind...heute siind dort steine und es fahren nur noch bahnen in den unterirdischen bahnhöfen wie z.b. den berliner platz(siehe video)...trotzdem, spurbusse haben wir immer noch!

special tracks for buses, which here they used to share with trams... elsewhere in Essen the buses still use their special tracks, which in German is known as O-Nahn, and the buses as 'spurbus'.

Now that's what you call a leading solution. Germany must be hailed here for trying many modern transport systems - not all of them make full sense, but no other country has the courage to go and try them. I'll be happy to live in Bonn in June/July and chech out the local transport system.
