....I suggest practicing your scissoring...only your thumb should be moving and you should be standing to the side of your dog so you can actually see what you are cutting. Eyes should always be following where you are scissoring..there should be no disconnection/pulling up with your shears....do that and you won't need snap-on combs and you'll be done ALOT faster....not to mention you get a much softer look when you scissor....
Thanks! Ive watched this entire video. Its has helped me understand how to do a few things that I couldnt get out of just reading my "groomers handbook". Thanks for taking the time to share.
I have a new standard poodle and am trying to learn to groom her myself. This video was a BIG help! Does the Stazko scissoring spray dry right away? My 1st attempt at clippering w/combs came out choppy due to static. Though brushed & combed thoroughly, the plastic combs kept catching in her hair.
How long have you been grooming? It seems newer groomers (10 years or less) like to use the clip on combs because they think it's a short cut. Why not just scissor? To me, it takes less time to hand scissor than to skim/cut with a snap on comb, then have to go back over the same area with scissors. Plus, that hip is way to square for me. I like a more natural, blended hip. I'm not trying to be mean. If your client likes that style hip, then by all means, keep doing it.
The combs aren't used as a complete shortcut, they are to set length only. Even in the grooming competition ring, combs are used to set a length, mainly in Entry and Intermediate divisions but I still see it from time to time in Open division. Besides, this video isn't for advanced groomers. It was made to help out poodle owners that have a poodle they would like to groom at home and a video was requested to show how to get the rear angulation on a poodle, that's why it was made.
Very very helpful!! I'm planning on putting my standard poo in a modern and I've been trying to figure out how to do the rear, this is exactly what i needed.
your grooming is great! you set angulation exactly the way i do it!
i love the wahl stainless combs as well, cept for the fact that they break when you drop them. i have had dogs knock my clippers of the table a couple times
not fun
gorgeous poodle! and do you have a petgroomerforums account? im doggroomer123 on there, and ummm do you compete in grooming contests?
Beautiful job! This looks great!! And you have a very very beautiful standard poodle. I just found a poodle that was very matted and in bad condition. I got his skin looking way better and his hair is growing out now. I was wondering what clippers you are using? It cuts through the hair like butter!
Congrats on your new poodle. I use Andis AGC2 clippers. Make sure your dog is clean and completely brushed/combed out before you begin clipping and make sure your blades are cleaned and oiled and they will slide through like butter also. Thanks for the comment.
Great video. Do you have any others. I am just learning how to clip my poodle and need advice on clipper technique, starting with the basics ie: how to hold the clippers properly to get an even clip, using combs, etc. Your video is the best one I've come across and would like more. Thanks.
Hi, Thanks so much. We have in the plans to make several videos on different breeds. One being to redo this video from start to finish and to show it on several dogs... and to do the entire dog. It won't be on youtube but on DVD... it will be a while yet but it will happen. Thanks again. Wendy
Very informative ! My poodle mix dislikes having her tail handled, any tips for getting her to stand up.She sits so I got to hold her up with one hand and work with the other.
I would suggest laying your dog on it's side and doing a massage for about 15 minutes per day... rubbing your hands ALL over the dog, she won't be able to sit and it should work to desensitize her about being touched. I would work around the rear and back legs alot. Also, work with her standing, not always during grooming either... just stand her, pet/rub lightly around rear area and treat if she stays up... she should do great. Alot of dogs at my shop used to be that way.. not anymore.
thank-you so much for this video. i'm trying to learn how to clip my standard poodle, and even without sound this is one of the most helpful videos i've seen. i was just getting ready to try and tackle leg angulation and didn't have a clue where to start. your video makes it so clear--i actually feel pretty confident about it now! again, THANK-YOU so much...

to all the haters ,it doesn't matter how you get there as long as you do a great job in the end, weather you use a snap on or hand scissor

@dmray67 Hey, as far as I know when I have went to competitions they do not do the blended hips anymore, you have to do angulation and stuff.
